Its Bluetooth or transmitter. Bluetooth is about 50 feet away and transmitter is about 500 ft away. No data plan needed.

The remote in the box is about the same as one in a factory system, a few hundred feet at the most. I added the 2 way remote, which gives a range of several thousand feet and lets you know if it worked.

I have a murano and the smart start don't work for it. I had nothing but problem with the smart start, so I removed it and just stick with basic Remote start. The rang for the smart start is anywhere in the world, it use data and satellite to tracking to start your car. The one way remote is half a mile. I would recommend getting the remote start and not the smart start and purchase a two remote separately which rang is 1 mile. And yes you have to pay for a data plan for the smart start
