We watch Netflix all the time without switching.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It depends on your TV and the physical connection you choose. Sadly, for most if not all TVs, digital optical transmits a 2.1 or 2.0 PCM signal. However, if your smart TV has 5.1 pass-thru capability and HDMI-ARC output then you could send true 5.1 to soundbar using HDMI. Bottom line is unless your TV supports it, Netflix would most likely be a 2.1 signal with "virtual" surround. I have my soundbar connected to a 2011 51" Samsung Plasma (PN51D490A1DXZA) using digital optical in PCM mode (only option I get). Surround is basically virtualized, but still sounds pretty amazing.
