How long it will last is dependant on the quality of the video being recorded and the format it's being recorded in, how many cameras you have, etc. Say you are using the typical 1080p, 15fps security camera system like Swann. You would get approximately 30 days of footage. Most systems will start to overwrite the oldest footage when full. It is all subjective though, to how active your cameras are.

Please try again later.i have a home security system and i am using a 1tb WD HD i have had mine recording for 5hrs straight with no problems. what you will need is a dvr system a HD and camera, but its cheaper to buy a full system then piece by piece find one with a 500 gig HD then just uprade the HD
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It stores data on magnetic discs (as opposed to solid state drives which are much more expensive but resistant to drops better). It will save data for many years. Easily over 10 years (in my experience), unless you have mechanical (hit it with a hammer or drop it, the PC or enclosure, while in use) or electrical accidents (surge or lightning). It should suit your application.
