Yes it would work. It supports up to a 6GB drive. I would recommend the "WD Red" version for surveillance camera recordings though, as that is what they're primarily designed for. As far as recording times, it would depend on how many cameras you have and what quality they record at (720p will record much longer than 1080p as will 18FPS (Frames Per Second) vs 30FPS but the quality won't be as good). WD has a tool called "Surveillance Storage Capacity Estimator Tool" on their website that should give you a pretty good estimate.
