• It depends how much internal storage you're backing up. When getting a external drive to run time machine on, I would recommend at minimum doubling your internal storage.

• Depending on your built in drive I would say larger is better. It can only back up the amount of storage it’s capable of so is limited by the amount of data you want to back up.

• It depends on how big your hard drive is on your computer bigger is almost always better when it comes to hard drives
