• Your Xbox will take care of everything. Once plugged in it will ask you if you want to format for storage. Once formatted it is ready to use.

• Your Xbox One will ask to format it completely if it will be used for game storage, or it will not format it if it will be used for media. There are no auto-backup solutions for Xbox One, other than your game saves to the cloud if you have Gold.
