• The newer square model does not have a light flashing to tell you that it is working/reading/sleeping.

• It comes out of the box compatible with both PC and Mac where as with the other version you would have to update and format before using. Or buy the Mac version if it. This version of My Book fixes that issue. Also new look without that LED. That’s it.

• The only differences I have been able to determine after speaking to Western Digital is that it is a newer look to differentiate generations.
