I have three Dishnet DVR's, two VIP722K and a VIP612. Each have a WD Passport 2tb for additional storage and they have been in constant use for years. Powered direct from the USB port with no issues. Dish can't use more than a 2tb hard drive due to the file format they use, their software can't format a drive more than 2tb in my experience.
