Hi MB, The WD My Passport Ultra for Mac comes pre-formatted for MAC OS. The hard drive will work as a plug-n-play hard drive on the MAC computer. If the drive does not recognized by your computer then you may need to reformat the drive in the compatible file system. Please refer to the link mentioned below for more information. I believe the answer would yes for both questions. I just got a new iMac and used the drive to back up from my old iMac (2013) some of my files and then connected it to the new iMac and everything was just fine. Hopes this helps
