a wifi is not required, this product searches for the cell tower for a signal, then amplifies it.

Primary use is to boost weak signal from cellular phone tower. You do not need Wi-Fi if you use only to get a stronger signal on your phone so you can use phone to receive & send voice/text/data/video.
