The switch can be in any state to control remotely. As long as your home WiFi connection is good & wherever you are has a good data connection, your WeMo app should show you the state of your switch presently & allow you to turn on, off or even schedule an action.

When using the app, or auto controls, it doesn't matter whether you have turned it on or off manually. The app and/or the automatic settings will then take over. And you can override those with the manual button anytime you want. This switch gives the use maximum flexibility.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.As it turns out, this is really more of a button than a switch. There is no "on or off" position. You can manually turn it on, ask Siri/google/alexa to turn it off, and vice versa.
