• So sorry, I haven't had this microwave long enough to know the answer to your question. I do know that if you call the Whirlpool people, they are very easy to work with. You can find the number at their website, whirlpool.com.

• Hello dm554! The difference is the unit would sense when the vent fan would need to come on compared to when you would turn the fan on yourself. To keep the microwave oven from overheating, the auto vent fan will automatically turn on at high speed if the temperature from the range or cooktop below the microwave oven gets too hot. When this occurs, the vent fan cannot be turned off. “AUTO FAN ON for heat circulation” appears in the display. Thank you for your inquiry on our Whirlpool appliances.
