• It updates via the device bluetooth connection to wifi. We access the info from laptop computer and also smartphone app remotely. Occasionally, there's a partial update of data and in a couple hours, the rest of the data comes through. Not sure what makes the difference at those times.

• No, you do not have to be near the mat. The mat uses its built-in Wi-Fi to upload data to the Internet.
