Is the hookup with an hdmi cable null

For me I used the optical cable that came with the soundbar.

The HDMI connector is actually HDMI ARC which your TV has to be configured to connect to. There is a physical difference in the connector type between HDMI ARC and regular HDMI. Use the optical cord as an alternative, which works just as well.
