jmac, yes you will need some sort of amplifier to power the speakers. You will likely also need some kind of pre-amplifier to control volume and select input (CD Player). If you buy a receiver, they have amplifier and pre-amplifier in one unit, so this is often the most cost effective way to go. If you do not plan on upgrading to surround sound in the future, I recommend purchasing a stereo receiver like the Yamaha R-S202BL. Surround sound receivers are a bit more complex to configure so if you aren't going to get surround sound you might want to keep it simple. Hope this helps.
