I'll answer my own question in case it helps anyone else. I actually contacted Yamaha support and the issue I had was that the HDMI Control (under HDMI in the settings menu) was set to on - note: what I was experiencing is not technically an issue and is how it is intended to work, but results may vary with different setups. When the setting is on it auto-detects information from the HDMI signal and so having the TV on was affecting that in some capacity; I'm not sure how own why, but nonetheless it was. Turning it off results in the audio coming through the TV speakers if the receiver is off and the receiver connected speakers if the receiver is on which suits my needs.

Cut off the tv speakers. Go to sound in the settings on your tv.
