Buggy Software limits quality hardware
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my third generation, robotic, vacuum cleaner, and while the hardware has improved, the software is quite limited and buggy. The set up of the unit is quite easy although one page of instructions was missing from the box. Once set up, I did have some trouble connecting, despite, excellent local Wi-Fi signal. I attempted to map the house, but it was incomplete. I moved the base and deleted the map and started again. Despite running the mapping software, multiple times, I would get intermittent errors telling me to restart the unit. This could not be done remotely, even though it was fully charged and connected. Eventually, I was able to get a fairly good map after two days of trying, and multiple runs. The application attempts to divide your house and name rooms. There is an editing tool, which crashed the application multiple times on my fully updated iPhone. The software is overall disappointing. The function mopping and vacuum is quite good for a robotic vacuum. The beating mechanism appears to be silicone and did not have any problems with fiber obstructing the rotating mechanism. The mopping pad is small, but attaches to an arm arm, which extends out only when needed. Robot has a small tank which is refilled from a larger tank in the base unit. I am hopeful that future software updates will improve the function. In my experience due to the complexity, these units require a good bit of effort to function well for your needs. Hopefully, as the bugs are worked out, this will become a low maintenance robotic vacuum.

Rise of the Robot Vacuums!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ continues a strong tradition from iRobot and it's Roomba line of products. Without a doubt, this is the best Roomba that I've owned (and I've had several over the years). Setup is a breeze. Plug in the base, download the app, connect the Roomba to the app, and prepare to get a cleaner house. Now, already having Roomba's in my house, I was able to simply transfer my existing home map to the j9+. so that it did not need to learn room layouts, furniture, etc. was. That was a time savings so that I could just focus on how well this unit cleaned. In my home, the main floor, which is where I use this Roomba, is entirely hardwood floors, making this the perfect Roomba for my setup. This unit, as a combo unit, has the ability to vacuum, mop, or vacuum and mop during each job. I love the fact that I can choose to vacuum and mop the kitchen and family room (more heavy traffic), and simply vacuum the living room. You can also choose multiple passes and now, with the latest software, can choose to do a deep cleaning mode, where it will go back and forth over areas with the mop, basically scrubbing some tougher marks. This seems to work well for sitckier small messes, but I wouldn't say it is necessarily a replacement for getting on your hands and knees to scrub out a spot. It does work surprisingly well for what it is. The best thing about the unit, in my opinion, is that the j9+ will return to it's base to refill the mopping tank when it runs low. For someone in my situation, where the entire floor is hard flooring, this is great. It refills the tank, and then continues where it left off. With my previous unit, the j7+ combo, I would get notifications that it ran out of liquid, sometimes after 2-3 rooms. That's fine when I'm at home, but now I don't need to be around. The refill tank is quite large too. I use the recommended Bona floor cleaner, which comes in 1 gallon bottles, and I'd say the tank holds about a half gallon of liquid, which will last quite a while between needing to be refilled. On the app, it will indicate how much liquid is left in the unit and in the refill tank, so you can see when it is getting time to refill the unit. The unit will also empty trash it's collected on it's run into the vacuum bag automatically. No need to run to the trash can to empty the unit each time. Suction on this unit seems to be really strong too, stronger than my previous units, in my experience. Is this unit for everyone? Probably not. If most of your home or floor is carpeted, for example, this unit is overkill. But if much of your floor is hard flooring, this is a great unit and will help to keep your home clean. All of the advanced features, like obstacle detection, room mapping, clean and keep out zones, scheduling, etc are all accessible via the app. The j9+ will detect and avoid falling down steps. Overall, this is an impressive little robot.

Best Combo Out There
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is by far the best Roomba combo out. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is more than a triple threat. With a high suction vacuum, smart scrub mop, self empty bin, and self refill mop it's a quadruple threat. What makes this a must have in my house is the Clean Base. The convenience of not having to empty the vacuum bin is helpful but auto refilling the mop seals the deal. My prior combo I hardly used the mop because of how small the cleaner container was. The j9+'s 30 day cleaner supply makes running this combo a cinch. The Roomba backs itself into the base to refill. It will do this automatically or via a button on the app. The bigger base doesn't look too bad either. They added some faux wood look to the top but it didn't really need it being all black. It's pretty inconspicuous. Vacuum wise this runs like all the rest. I miss the D shaped chassis of the S9+. I think this one misses some spots with the rollers in-between the tires and the edge brush will sometimes fling debris too far causing the vacuum to miss it. However the suction power makes up for a lot. This picked up significantly more dirt running after my j7. It does a good job at noticing different floor types so it's not mopping carpet. I haven't noticed any difference with the claims that it detects and responds to higher trafficked areas. Obstacle detection is good so far. It hasn't vacuumed up anything that it shouldn't of. The review of the pictured obstructions is helpful too. Warning that the self empty is pretty loud. This is good for getting everything out of the robot but can be startling. With the mop I like to be able to adjust the amount of water but I wish the ultra setting released more liquid. The smart scrub with pressure is noticeably better than my prior mop. I didn't notice it scrubbing any areas that really needed it though. So any sensors for that didn't seem to work on my floor. It ran across dried spaghetti sauce and hot chocolate and cleaned those up. Kool-aid didn't seem to come up but I've noticed that some messes take a couple runs. I didn't have any spots that smeared but I did have tougher spots that didn't come up even with the smart scrub. So it's not a perfect system but it helps tidy somethings up. You'll still have to get some elbow grease in there to get really clean floors. There is sometimes a grinding noise and I'm not sure if that's the sound of it applying pressure or not. Overall I like iRobot products especially because the app and operating system are always improving and getting smarter. I like that this is all included in purchase and the app is one of the better one's I've used. It really helps out that you can set up clean zones like in front of the fridge or stove so that you can easily target those areas that need mopped the most. I'd recommend this combo because of the amount of convenience the Clean Base provides.

The top of the line Roomba with a twist
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ Self Emptying & Auto-Fill Robotic Vacuum is the crem de le crem of the iRobot Series Automatic Vacuum. The Roomba j9+ Combo comes with an auto fill tank, extra filter, two mop pads and an extra brush to ensure you can enjoy continuous cleaning operation with ease. Opening the box, you will notice just how big the dock unit is. The bulk of the dock unit is the holding tank for the debris and cleaning solution for mopping. The Roomba j9 robot is a true hands-free cleaning and mopping household appliance you will soon realize you cannot live without. Setting up the Roomba Robot is easy. Place the dock unit on a level surface and plug in. Place the Roomba Robot into the dock with contact plates on the bottom facing in. Power on the Dock with the power button on the top right of the unit. Grab your mobile phone or tablet and install the iRobot App from the Apple Store or Google Play store. Once the app is installed, tap on the app and follow the instructions on connecting the iRobot to your wireless network. That's basically it. In the app there are many options for you to choose from. Whether you just want to clean your entire room or get creative and map out your rooms in your house, it does it all. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ Self-Emptying & Auto-Fill Robot is the very best in autocleaning on the market. It simply cleans incredibly well and has built-in obstacle avoidance to boot!

A Top Performer that Looks Good, too
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Robot vacuums are, in my opinion, one of the best smart home investments you can make. On the whole they work well, and automate a regular task without much intervention. With a range of machines and price points available, is it worth investing in a higher-end model? I've owned a number of iRobot's Roomba models at different price points, as well as robot vacuums from other manufacturers. Going up in price brings notable differences, and depending on your use case, you might find paying more worthwhile. The latest trend in robotic cleaning is the addition of mopping capabilities. Each manufacturer does things differently and iRobot is no exception. Their latest offering is the Roomba Combo j9+, which offers vacuuming and mopping capabilities as well as automatic dirt disposal and mopping tank refills -- a first for iRobot. I've been waiting for iRobot to introduce automated taking refilling; the idea of manually filling the robot's clean water tank has held me back, as the need to fill it before each mopping session really defeats the hands-off nature afforded by self-emptying robotic vacuums, which I've really come to love with my previous Roomba j7+. The Combo j9+ arrived in a massive box: this is no ordinary robot vacuum. As usual, iRobot has carefully and smartly packaged the entire system, using very little plastic and lots of recyclable materials. Everything is easy to unbox and I was able to recycle all the packaging materials, which is a huge plus in my book. The massive box is a result of the new base station that enables automatic dirt disposal and clean water tank refills. It's certainly large and in charge compared to other Roomba self-emptying stations, but the overall footprint on the floor is nearly identical to that of my j7+ -- the biggest change is that the base now swallows nearly the entire Roomba when it's docked. This creates room for the dirt disposal and large refillable base station water tank, as well as storage for dirt disposal bags, mopping pads and other robot accessories, all hidden behind a large front door. iRobot really put a lot of thought into the base station, and it shows. Not only is it cleverly designed, it's also well-made and, dare I say, somewhat attractive. Yes, it's all plastic, including the woodgrain panel on top, but the combination of the woodgrain, matte black plastic and ribbed design elements really go a long way to making the base station something you won't feel the need to hide away -- which is good, because it's big enough overall that you may need to keep it out in full view. Happily I was able to find a spot for it, and the cube design keeps most of the robot vacuum hidden, so it's less obtrusive in that way. Setup was straightforward, with basic instructions included the box, and a simple pairing process in the iRobot app, which walks you through everything to get the Combo j9+ up and running. iRobot's app is cleanly designed and definitely leans toward the minimal, which is both good and bad. Basic settings and commands are handled easily, but digging into your robot's settings comes with a bit of a learning curve. You'll find settings for the machine (default cleaning modes, child lock, updates etc.) in one area, but some settings for each "mission" -- what iRobot terms vacuuming/mopping jobs -- are only accessible when creating a job itself. This gives you the flexibility to change suction, cleaning passes and water levels with each job, but it took me a minute to find all the settings I was looking for. Just something to note. The app lets you start cleaning missions on the fly as well as schedule them based on time or your location, which is how I set up my j9+. This requires integrating the app with IFTTT to track your phone's location, although I was also given the option to connect the app with my ecobee smart thermostat for location information. I wish home/away geolocation was built directly into the iRobot app, but regardless, a few minutes of tinkering and your robot will know when you leave and return, and behave accordingly. I have my Combo j9+ set to vacuum every day when I leave the house, and vacuum and mop a few days during the week when I leave. It's just me and my cat in an apartment, so I don't find the need for the floors to be mopped daily, but I love coming home to a freshly-vacuumed house. It makes a huge difference keeping the cat hair at bay. Most folks who come over comment on how they can't tell I have a cat until they see him, and that's due in large part to Roomba cleaning my floors for me. After setting the j9+ up for the first time I sent it on a mapping-only mission, which devotes all the robot's smarts to creating a map of your house. The j9+ spent about an hour mapping on its first run, and it got stuck twice (under a dining room chair and under a side table). Because this was its first run, I cut it some slack, thinking it would remember where it got stuck and not go back again. After the mapping run was complete the app offered me a pretty complete map of my home, with the rooms already labeled and the rugs identified as carpet. Every time you run the Roomba it will improve the map, and I especially like how it will identify obstacles and take pictures for you to designate no-go zones later. Expect the j9+ to get stuck a few times as it learns your home, and take a few minutes to mark no-go zones in the map, as this will make a big difference in how your robot performs. I was impressed with the level of detail and speed with which it created this map, so I immediately sent the j9+ on a cleaning mission to see how it performed. The j9+ is quieter than my j7+, but not by all that much. It is able to detect the difference between carpet and bare floors and the vacuum suction changes within a second, which is neat. It largely cleans in rows, followed by a trip around the edges of the room, whether it's just vacuuming or vacuuming + mopping. As I was hoping, the j9+ is a very strong performer, just like my j7+, living up to iRobot's reputation. While it's a little quieter, it's not what I would call quiet, which is why I have it set to run when I'm not home. Automatic mopping was the big draw for me, and I'm pleased to say the j9+ does a fairly good job. The robot is able to turn around and fill its own tank from the base station before a job, and just like in the commercials, it only puts the mopping pad down on bare floors. When it's done with floors and moves to carpet the machine smoothly picks the pad up and docks it on top of its body. It's very satisfying to watch and really does keep your carpets dry. After a job the machine will return to the base and empty its dust bin. Here, too, iRobot has reduced the noise a bit compared to my j7, but the auto-emptying is still fairly loud -- another reason I like it all done while I'm not home. Overall I'm very pleased with the Roomba Combo j9+. It's very well-built, nice to look at, and the addition of an auto-filling water tank means you can go weeks at a time without emptying the vacuum or filling the water tank. The mop pads are washable and like most parts of the vacuum easily replaceable, which is another hallmark of the iRobot brand. After getting stuck a handful of times on its first few runs the j9+ noted all the no-go zones I hoped it would and hasn't had a single issue in the days after. My quibbles are few; namely, mapping is not foolproof and requires some human intervention, so please know that. I do wish iRobot offered more granular settings for the robot, like the ability to disable all lights and buttons (my cat is far too smart for his own good), but these are things that may come in time. If you want a vacuum and a mop and you're looking for the best balance of quality, reliability, repairability and cleaning performance, I think it's tough to beat the Roomba Combo j9+.

Doesn’t Mop, Poor Battery Life, Dissapointing
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It can’t complete a single room before needing to spend hours recharging its battery. It takes all day to clean 4 rooms. Nonstop error messages, battery dead, it’s stuck find it & not even in an enclosed space! The mopping feature is useless. Mopping pad moves into place, it’s rarely damp. Rinsed the pad after days of mopping and it’s not even dirty! It can self refill solution but useless because it uses so little solution, it rarely needs refilling. Cleaned sprayer, nothing obstructing it, it just doesn’t spray much solution. 5 attempts to contact iRobot’s Customer Service, zero responses. Initiated return through iRobot stating reasons for return, still no response from iRobot’s Customer Service just print label & drop it off at a UPS store. $1000 robot, nonstop problems and zero Customer Service or Support from iRobot. Don’t waste your money.

Vacuuming Challenged Robot Vacuum
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Save your money, complete junk. Misses obvious dirt on floors, constantly stuck, replaceable parts wear very quickly, can't hold a charge (and I have a very small house). Plus it's dumb: vacuums an area, goes to another room and vacuums a couple minutes there, then returns to previous spot to vacuum some more. For this price there should NEVER be an issue with performance.

Doesn't perform like it should
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Stay away from this robot. After spending over $1000 on this robot, it would not mop where it was supposed to. I contacted customer service and was sent a "service robot". This robot also would not mop where it was supposed to, so I contacted customer service again. This time I was sent a whole new "retail pack" which included a robot and dock. Again, this robot did not clean like it was supposed to. I sent customer service a screenshot of the smart map showing that it wasn't mopping but small random areas and I was told the case was escalated. Fast forward 3 weeks later and I'm getting radio silence. No response to emails and when I call tech support I'm told "a supervisor will contact you within 24 hours". No call. No email. I call back and they say their supervisor wants to send me ANOTHER robot, but when I asked if I could speak to the supervisor. I'm put on a 10 minute hold and then told. "There's no supervisor available." What a joke. Wish I could give them 0 stars as I am now stuck with a $1000+ robot that does the same thing as my $300 one used to do.

Look into other products
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Complete waste of money and time. I have not had one single successful cleaning run with this product in the 6 months that ive owned it. Everytime, some kind of error comes up. getting lost, not communicating, not emptying the bin, not refilling the water, not charging, the water jets clogged, the cleaning pad getting stuck… the list goes on. I am constantly having to correct errors and reset the unit. I spend way more time tending to its errors than just vaccuming and mopping the place by hand myself. Customer service is the usual junk that you would expect this day and age where no one actually knows anything and just keep giving you the run around with their prewritten scripts about issues. Never actually solving any issues. Middle school kids could build a more reliable robot. I will not give this company any more of my money.

BUYER BEWARE!!! IRobot renders products useless
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Updated my app and my Roomba is useless now. It was working perfectly fine before the update. Now it'll push itself off the charger every time I leave it right on top so it's always dead. Can't even diagnose it through the app. Buyer beware, I won't ever use Roomba products again if they're going to be bricking them and rendering them useless. Waste of money
