    Great Chromebook

The Acer Chromebook spin 714 for this year is a really great Chromebook. It has plenty of power with the 13th gen Intel core i5 at 4.6 gigahertz and the 8GB of DDR4 ram plus 256gb SSD. Build quality is really good in my opinion. Yes its plastic but looks premium. The hinge is really good because I can open this Chromebook with one hand which you can't do with a lot of laptops out there. The Key travel on the keyboard for me is sufficient and they are well spaced I can type really great on this one. The screen gets plenty bright for indoor use at 340 nits but I think you'd struggle to see the screen outdoors. The screen seems evenly lit and I don't see any light bleed when I start this up. its also a touch screen, the touch screen is very responsive and thanks to the gorilla glass it gets minimum fingerprints and smudges. I love flipping this screen around and using this Chromebook like a tablet or even in tent mode while watching videos or TV. Speakers are pretty weak, even at top volume. I've been using a Bluetooth speaker to supplement the weak speakers Not mad about it as this is a Chromebook and I don't expect much from it in that aspect. This comes with an HDMI 2.1 port and 2 thunderbolt 3.2 ports which can be used for charging and data transfer. Also a USB A port so all in all a good setup for the ports. You shouldn't have any issues connecting your peripherals. Connectivity is through the WiFi 6. I have a mesh system in my house that is Wifi 6e and I get great connectivity throughout my hose the speeds are consistent and ive never dropped connection with this Chromebook. Overall I think this a great Chromebook and decently priced. Ive been using this daily to do everything from edit some documents to surfing the .net and watching a ton of TV and videos. I was in the market for the fruity laptop but I think this will satisfy me for sometime to come

Very poor customer service at best buy. DO Not buy expect warranty to cover it if you have any problems. The screen was lifting from the display a little. I'm a total member so it's under warranty I figure ok I'll have them take care of it since 2 year warranty is included as a total perk. They sent it for service and after two weeks they tell me it qualifies for exchange. Ok fine, but they no longer carry that model. So now my only choice is to take a significant downgrade (exchange can only be up to what was paid) or take a refund! Very upset! Exchange should be same product or equivalent spec

this computer did not meet expectations. Within a year the speakers and camera would sometimes work if you were lucky. While the laptop does have a 360 degree screen, it affected the microphone and made it stop working after a few times. The OS hasn't had any big changes and for close to 500$ it's best to go for a windows product or something that has a more reparable company

This Spin 714 replaces a 3 year old “mid range” Chromebook and the difference is remarkable! It’s always interesting to see this type of improvement with personal technology, and Chromebooks seem to have gone from sputtering a little a few years ago to providing some strong performances in the current market. Acer offers a lot of choices in their Chromebook line, and the 714 might be a little much for the daily uses of email, videos, social media, and general browsing since it has the more powerful processor, lots of memory, and lots and lots of hard drive storage space. This would be a good choice if you are wanting to get the best horsepower and a little bit more screen area to use for video/graphics editing or just like to be sure you have plenty of kick available when you are popping open lots of tabs, apps, and programs. Setup is easy, especially when moving from “old” to “new” Chromebook. Build quality seems sturdy enough, with a good bit of plastic for reduced weight. Battery power goes pretty much all day with light use, videos, and general browsing – but if you are really putting the stress on then you may want to have a charging plug handy to get in a complete day’s work. Overall this is a good Chromebook for light home office, high school or college students (general use), and just puttering around for personal use. To me, it’s usually worth spending a few more bucks to go “up a notch” on electronics to be sure the Chromebook will still get the upgrades and maintain acceptable performance a few years down the road. Greetings from Central Georgia!

    Screen flickering and keyboard problems

I experienced screen flickering issues and my keyboard essentially turning off (thinking I was in tablet mode while I was typing). Best Buy gave me a replacement and I am still having the same issues with the new one. The only option is to send to Acer for repair. It works great if the screen is shut and using an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, but hasn't worked to use it as a regular laptop.

    Bad Battery

I purchased this Chromebook in November for my son for Christmas. Last week the battery died and won't hold a charge. We tried to get it fixed at Best Buy, but they directed us to Acer because it's past the return period. I think we'll be able to get it fixed after paying to ship it to Acer, but it sure is disappointing that Best Buy won't stand behind this purchase after approximately 3 months of use. We did some research and realized that this problem has happened to many other people, so you may want to consider a different type of Chromebook.

      Dear DanD,
We are sorry you had battery issues with your Acer Chromebook. Best Buy being the reseller would be available to assist with sales or returns. There are no known issues with the battery in this product but if there is a hardware problem with the Chromebook outside the return policy, this is where your manufacturer's warranty will cover any repairs needed.

Within 10 minutes of turning thid laptop on it started glitching... When I would click the control of shift key the screen would go black. Got progressively worse to the point where I wouldn't even have to click anything for it to just go blank. Got an exchange since the best buy associate acted shocked. The second one was even worse. Geek squad had no resolution either

      Dear EduardoV
We are sorry to hear this. You mention you live in the UK but you don't say where you purchased your Chromebook. If you purchased the system in the US the domestic warranty would be in the US. The Chromebook has an International Travelers Warranty but this is for genuine travelers only. Terms and Conditions are posted at http://www.acer.com/worldwide/support/itw.htm. This page also provides links to the ITW service locations, ITW FAQ, and ITW Service Limitations. Please note if you live outside North America but purchase the system in the US, you will not get a domestic warranty in your country of residence.

After using this chromebook for around a month, it has met my expectations in terms of battery life, speed, and ease of use. I got this for light use (internet browsing, remote desktop, email, video calls), and it has performed well for those applications. The only minor issues I have encountered are (1) the volume seems to randomly decrease occasionally, but I have read that this is an issue on multiple Chromebook models. (2) The touch screen doesn't seem as responsive as I would like in some applications, but it is not a major issue.

    Solid Device with Great OS

Many people overlook Chromebooks as an alternative to Windows laptops. For some users this does make sense. For most users, this should be an option the look at. Chromebook is an excellent option for those wanting to do web browsing, email, watching video, etc. since it runs a modified version of the Android operating system, you can use the Google play store and use apps that are available on Android based phone. This includes Microsoft Office, Zoom and other productivity tools people think are only available on Windows. Another benefit is improved security. You can get a virus on a Chromebook but the chances are less than on a Windows device. As far as this Chromebook goes, it is a solid system that is fast and responsive. The device is built well and the screen is very bright and clear. It doesn’t seem to get the same battery life as other devices but should suffice for most users. The only downside I see is the price. While not the highest price Chromebook, the specs on this device, while solid, may not support the price. If you see it on sale, it would be a great option to buy. Overall, at the right price, I would recommend this Chromebook.

As a Mac user, a good ancillary device

    Posted .

I have been a Mac user for 20+ years, with little experience with Chromebooks. I primarily use a Mac Mini Pro (desktop) and an older Macbook Pro. Instead of adding a new Macbook Air or Pro, I decided to pick up this Chromebook for half the price. Pro I wanted to try a touch screen--I now try to swipe on my MBP. It is convenience. Con The trackpad is trash. Either use touch or a mouse if you want accuracy. Pro The speakers are great. Easy to use for video watching. Charges quickly. The operating system UI reminds me of Windows, it took me a bit of time to figure out the new system, but it is intuitive. Cons Size. It is not the most sleek and weighs as much as my MBP. Bc of the limitations of the OS, I find myself using my old MBP to use Adobe programs, but I can see it coming in handy as a secondary device or primary if you are mostly a Google Suite and web-based app user.
