Mid radio
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Everything about the radio seemed nice until the radio started having issues receiving video for the backup camera, we tried 2 whole different cameras and they both worked for a few seconds then stop then the radio needs reset, in our bay we spent way more time then we needed to to tty to resolve this problem and i gotta say please dont waste your time on this radio if you want a backup cam because its a hit or miss if its gonna work or notand for the money JVC or Kenwood will get you straight!! Im very disappointed in the radio and for my customer

Nice Stereo - missing a couple of things...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I made the decision to buy this Alpine unit because of its simple clean look in both design and software interface in attempt to retain an overall OEM appearance in my vehicle. No physical buttons or knobs - all touch screen with Apple CarPlay. I was very interested in CarPlay in order to bring some modern features to my 2010 Xterra SE. Here's a rundown of my install experience. The unit has two wiring harnesses. One is the standard speaker wires and various power connections. The other handles the Pre Outs for amplifiers as well as the camera inputs (there are two camera inputs). It has a coaxial antenna pigtail and a Sirius tuner port. Sirius tuner is an accessory - there is no tuner built in to the ilx-w650. My Xterra had a Rockford Fosgate premium system with amplified speakers, steering wheel remote and bluetooth handsfree for phone calls. There were four different harnesses connected to the factory head unit. Two handle power and audio and the other two handle the steering wheel remote and bluetooth connections. I used Metra NIWH1 wire harness to connect to the factory power/audio harnesses. Made up all of the connections (except for the parking and reverse - see below) between the Alpine harness and the Metra harnesses. I did not use the Pre Outs (to start). Hooked everything up to run a test. Unit powered on with the ignition and started playing the radio. The sound seemed good at first but I started realizing the volume scale was strange. At volume level of 1, there was still quite a lot of volume and a very noticeable "hiss" or "buzz" or "fuzz" or "static" depending on your lingo. I took the vehicle out for a spin around the block and the volume turned up would mask the noise but it didn't go away. So I did some research and found another user had a similar issue. They were able to solve the problem by using the Pre Out RCA plugs for the Front and Rear speakers. So I took the Metra harnesses and wired up some male RCA plugs to the speaker wires. If you do this, make sure you tape up the ends of the stereo side speaker wires. I reconnected everything using the Pre Outs and tested again. The volume scale was back to normal and the "hiss" was gone. It has something to do with the signal voltage going to the factory amp. Most aftermarket amps are 4v but factory was only 2v (I read that but I'm not an expert). I took the vehicle back out for a spin and noticed a new noise that increased with acceleration. I found some threads online that indicate this is a grounding issue and can be resolved by using a "T" ground. I have not attempted this yet. There is a way to use the factory steering wheel remote with this unit by wiring in an AXXESS ASWC-1 Interface. This requires counting pins on the 16 pin factory side harness and making up some connections. I'm a little intimidated with this and have not yet attempted. I learned that this unit also has a few safety features that can be annoying such as limiting the functionality of the software until the vehicle is parked and emergency brake is applied. You cannot access the system settings or view camera inputs unless you park or put the vehicle in reverse. I did not make any of those connections in the harnesses. I just bundled them up and taped them off. I found a bypass simply called Micro Bypass on Amazon - these are specific to vehicle make/model so search accordingly. I needed this bypass in order to check my trailer loads. The Xterra has a pretty small rear window and the gate design makes it impossible to see a low trailer and also makes parking in reverse challenging. So I wanted a camera which I wired up using the power to the taillights when headlights are turned on. This way I could check the camera while moving forward. I bought a camera from Amazon and it was pretty easy to install - there are tons available so pick the one that mounts well in your vehicle. Everything is working well and I'm overall pretty pleased with the Alpine ilx-x650. I didn't check in the store to see if the background was customize able. It is not and there are no hacks to do so. Maybe a software update in the future will allow this but right now, it's a no. There aren't even color options for the interface which is odd. CarPlay is pretty cool and I think I will enjoy using it compared to my factory unit with no Navigation or smart functions. One thing to consider is the data used by CarPlay. If you're streaming or searching Maps a lot, it might be a good idea to get an unlimited plan. You could also download the area you live in directly to Google Maps and turn off data for that app. Hope that helps some of you considering this unit.

What they don't tell you...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Most of these I was looking at are pretty comparable price range, so I accepted that.. Screen is clear! Controls..flawless!.. the fact you can do both Apple and Android! 5* for all of this! What they don't tell you...ANYWHERE.. I had to do some serious research after mine was installed and ran into issue with things not working.. *It's mandatory you hook up the safety features* The part with the E brake.. Do with this information as you wish.. this involves a lot more then a simple install. GOODBYE U-CONNECT! Id defiantly recommend this to anyone!
