Great for reading and internet but not enough apps

Okay so I'm stuck on this tablet, it's a love-hate relationship. On one hand the screen is crystal clear, the internet browser is super fast, it's easy to use but on the other hand there's barely any applications available that I want and use, web videos skip every time you play one and I had to contact Amazon (who was VERY helpful) to get it setup because it wouldn't link with my account. I will say this I plan to save up and buy an iPad mini asap and only use this for reading and maybe Facebook. So if you are able take my advice and buy an iPad mini you'll be much happier. If Amazon were to add more applications I would recommend the kindle fire HDX for those on a budget but until then I wouldn't.

Solid small tablet alternative

Amazon has some improvements to make but this is still a very good small tablet. Not great for power users, this is more of a user friendly device with limitations. It won't rival an ipad or android for all the functionality, but what it does it does well. Screen is nice for reading, movies are great because the sound is great, being an Amazon Prime member makes this a really nice media consumption package! Wish the size was more rectangular like the nexus 7 (easier to hold one handed), but with a nice cover its acceptable. I purchased a 'Poetic' magnet flip cover case which works very well. App store limitations are overstated. This has plenty of available apps. The only problem right now is software integration. Some apps run a little more glitchy than their apple or google store versions, but that will likely get better. A more serious problem seems to be fairly widespread from what I can see from some forums. This unit drops WiFi pretty regularly and its a pain to have to reset the WiFi connection daily. At least mine only happens (so far) after unit has been sleeping. Others have complained about losing WiFi during streaming etc. I haven't had that happen yet but its still enough of an issue to make me think about returning the unit, which I really don't want to do because I love Amazon's ecosystem and I want to give this a chance. I hope future software updates will take care of this and it will eventually be a non-issue.

Very Happy With This Tablet

I was going to give this Fire HDX 4 stars, but that would not be fair. The reason is my disappointment with not having a rear camera. But this tablet never advertised two cameras, and if a decent camera was included the price would jump to a point where this is no longer such a bargain.
The screen is incredible, very high quality for viewing pictures and watching videos. Speed is great, quick response from app to app, also very snappy browsing the web.
Now that I discovered that I can load Google play Apps in just seconds to the Fire, I am more than satisfied with this great little tablet.
I highly recommend this for anyone who wants a quality tablet for a great price.

This is my first tablet and now I wonder why I waited so long. It is super easy to use and I can quickly make a web query, take a picture or show recent You-Tube videos. The sound is quite good considering this is a really thin device. We still have the laptop in the den but the Kindle Fire HDX has become the device of choice. It is also nice to access all my Kindle books.

I've had my kindle fire for about 6 months and I mostly love it. It is great for those apps you need a bigger screen for, given there is a kindle version of it (which is hit and miss). There is also limited flash capabilities so a few features are missing from sites. There is an experimental flash player that pops up for some videos on sites, but not others. I have also experienced freezing and crashing in the silk browser as well as the system itself. It isn't consistent enough to identify a trigger, or to warrant a negative grade. Overall I like it and it serves its purpose well.

First, I think think this is a great tablet. It's very light and the perfect size. That is why I actually chose it over the NExus 7. The Nexus is too long. The Fire HDX is perfectly shaped. Buying from Amazon is simple and the tablet is super fast. Reading on this is great and if you are an Amazon Prime member, this is hands down the best tablet to own. Downsides I discovered after getting it are no expandable memory (can't load up movies for trip), can't load Play store (you can side load somewhat but not perfect and lose functionality), can't chromecast from HBO Go and you cannot connect bluetooth gamepads to it (even if rooted). End of the day it's a fantastic tablet unless you bought a ton of droid apps and expect to use them form Play store, use a gamepad or want tons of space for movies/music offline. My preference for the shape was the real decision maker for me but I didn't know alot of those other things until I got it.

We have had these kindle fires HDX for almost a month and we love them. We are able to read or watch tv while the other is doing something else. The high quality of the screen is amazing, and being able to surf the web while listening to book is nice.
Their is a few things we really wish were different was that their is no camera on back for pictures other then "selfies" and only having WiFi is another. For the price is really why we went with kindles instead of a Samsung or IPad tablet.

This was a surprise Christmas gift from my wife and I like it a lot. We are mostly Apple users owning 2 Ipads and several IPhones. As a result I have a lot of apps, music etc. on the Apple store already so I was a little concerned about using an Android device and additionally concerned about one that is further segregated to the Android offerings from the Kindle store since I couldn't use any of my Apple items on it. I have found though that for me this is not a big deal and is actually somewhat liberating since I only want to use the Kindle for reading, watching videos, playing an occasional game and viewing or editing documents from the office sometimes. For these tasks the Kindle works very well and is highly recommended. If, however, you have a ton of Apple content already, are wanting access to the entire unlimited Android marketplace vs the more limited (although much more secure) Amazon marketplace or you want this device to be a primary device to do everything you may not be completely satisfied.
When I set the Kindle up I went into the Amazon store and found that pretty much everything I wanted was there and most of it was free or close to free with many things on special such as an office app to view and edit PowerPoint and Word docs and a wireless printer app which are both very handy. In addition, since this is a tablet many of the things I had on Apple were phone centric and not something I wanted on a Kindle anyway. I didn't want or need apps to find cheap gas, measure heart rate or give me driving directions but I did want some to read books, watch video and an occasional game and there were a great many for free or cheap that work much better than on my iPhone such as Netflix, Spotify, Kindle and Youversion Bible. Of course, none of my ITunes music made the leap but if I want that it's on my iPhone anyway.
Where the Kindle really shines though is reading books and watching movies. My entire library of books from the Kindle store immediately loaded and was available and since your Amazon account is right there as well it's quick and easy to find more. Many are free, near free and there are frequent sales as well. Shopping on Amazon is easy too and there is a "shop" button to take you there instantly. Netflix works well and the picture is stunning plus there are many apps that give you access to a wide variety of video content from Nickelodean, Disney, PBS and some movies. Your cable company may even have an app to access live tv or let you input your cable username to get a huge library of shows based on cable channels you have.
Bottom line is that this is a great mini-tablet for some people but possibly not for everyone. If you want something to read books, watch streaming content and play some games it is a tremendous value especially if you like shopping or reading through Amazon. If, however, you want access to the entire Android market at Google, need this to be your only device or want this as an IPad alternative you might be happier with an IPad or a native Android device. For what it does well though it does better than anything else.
A final thought worth mentioning is if you are buying this for a child it is probably one of the better options. You can set it up very easily right out of the box to limit types of content, time spent on the device and even review those choices later. You can also give "coins" for use on the app store as a way to limit purchases or as a kind of allowance. It also naturally encourages book reading because it's optimized for that and many public libraries now offer loans of digital books as an alternative to physical ones. In addition, the Amazon store has pretty much every game your child might want to play but not as many edgy ones they probably shouldn't. Angry Birds, candy crush, Star Wars Lego, Plants v Zombies etc are all there but not as many of the more grown up n and you can easily make those off limits using the parental control settings anyway.

Both of my kids who are 12 and 9 love these! They are a great tool for their ages where they can read, play games, listen to music, watch movies, yet it's compact and they can take them to school, in the car, etc. The graphics and screen quality is amazing.

First of all, this is NOT an iPad substitute. That isn't why I bought it. I browse the internet, Netflix, imdb, Wikipedia, shop amazon, Skype, and Pandora. Those are pretty much all I use this for when I'm home on the couch, or in bed. The browser is okay, and was recently updated and slightly improved. I prefer amazon on this device than I do my cellphones. And the advertisements on Pandora don't obstruct the screen like they do on a cellphone, which I greatly appreciate. Pair it with your chromecast. Can't give it a 5 star rating only because I've used an ipod/ipad/iphone. It's better than my old Samsung tab though.

I purchased the Kindle Fire about 2 years ago and thought that product was great. My house got robbed about a month ago and I had to end up buying a new one. Thankfully insurance covered the cost. But what I found was an AMAZING upgrade from the one I had. It of course organizes everything beautifully and makes reading much more pleasurable. Also very spacious with Bluetooth capability (didn't have that before). Love how lightweight and thin it is too.

We recently upgraded to the Kindle Fire HDX, and we're more than pleased with the results. Improved processing power and HD optics put it in line with the iPad Mini, but there is the obvious drawback of Kindle-only app purchases. In addition, the online price is cheaper than the store price, so make sure you get the better deal online!

I had an original Kindle Fire and had loved it, when Best Buy offered the $50 trade in offer I couldn't pass it up. I love the HDX! The only (minor) drawback for me was the larger size. The screen size is the same, but the device itself is larger than the original - making it a little harder to slip into a small purse. Other than that it's great, well worth the upgrade.
