It takes 5 minutes to start up and sometime 2 minutes for an app to load. Don't expect to use Final Cut Pro or logic in this thing. Apple needs a serious refresh right now.

I recently switched to this Mac Mini from my Windows 7 Desktop computer. The Mac Mini is definitely a step up from any Windows computer. It is so small, that I do not have to have to deal with the huge HP computer tower. This can simply sit on your desk. This Mac runs OS X Yosemite and it is flawless from what I have experienced so far. I have a ton of pictures and information, and the 500GB, 4GB RAM is still enough for my needs. The computer is fast, and is very reliable. Apple always does a great job with their electronics, and I am so glad I have steered their way. If you do get this computer, and want to plug it into your original desktop computer monitor, you can either choose a VGA, HDMI or DVI adapter. I tried the VGA and it did not work well (the screen was discolored). So, I got the DVI adapter and cable for it, and it works perfectly for my computer screen. If the VGA does not work in your favor (like in my case) Use the DVI adapter and it probably will work.

    Excellent computer for the price

Upgrade from previous model, faster processor, more energy efficient, runs more quiet, thunderbolt 2 connections for faster speeds, faster graphics, preloaded with newest OS and all for $100 cheaper than previous model! Excellent computer for average user. I don't know why computer enthusiast are commenting negatively on this computer; it is priced at $500, remember the saying " you get what you paid for" , don't expect a powerhouse for that price. Design is the same, aluminum body and looks like same size. RAM memory is onboard or soldered so upgrades not possible. For the average user I don't think upgrading is on their mind anyways and even if you were to upgrade, you might as well consider a more powerful iMac that is preloaded with higher memory since you will dish out another $150-$200 on Ram ( Good Ram, not the cheap brands). Buy this computer, it is a great deal with all the considerations mentioned earlier!

Hello. I started with the first generation G4 model and have upgraded about every other release. The last one I had was the i7 with 16GB of RAM which was very fast and worked very well. I sold it to move to this model. To compare the two, this model is painfully slow at launching apps. iTunes bounces about 10 times before it opens. Kind of disappointing. Also, you cannot upgrade the RAM as it is soldered to the motherboard. I may upgrade to an SSD to squeeze out more speed. I would probably not buy it again and wish I had my i7 one still.

Fantastic little machine, with one drawback

This base version os the Mac mini is a perfect desktop of the Apple world. It is the cheapest Apple computer, but, delivers very good performance overall. If you are a regular internet user, do spreadsheets, word processing, listen to music and deals lightly with photos, this is the machine for you. There is one drawback tho. This Mac mini comes with a HDD and not a SSD. Most of new computers and laptop do not use HDD anymore due to its low reading a writing speeds. I took around 45 minutes to go to all the initial Mac OS Sierra steps, then the performance was just sluggish. Safari would take a while to open, the mail app suffered as well, even going to the settings app the mouse would turn into the little colorful disk, which would spin for like forever (it tells the systems is waiting too long for a response, in this case from the hard drive). But, there is way to circumvent this. I bought an external SSD drive with a USB connection (For $100) - you can find tutorials in You Tube on how to set it up, took me less than 30 minutes to get is up and running - I have to say the improvement is AMAZING! All apps open quickly and it is like I am operation a top of the line machine. if you are a power user that deals with images, videos or anything that requires lots of processing power, you should not get this base model - it only comes with 4GB, so multitasking can be difficult.

Decent Computer for Everyday Tasks or as an HTPC

My first Mac, still getting used to it. Moving all of my files over was relatively easy with the built in tool. Comes with all apps I need, a learning curve, but I appreciate not having to buy everything again. Works great for web browsing, word processing, spreadsheets. iTunes of course is there and my iPhone syncs really fast, though apparently iTunes on the Mac doesn't sync Notes, which was a big headache to work around. The price is reasonable for an i5 machine, but 4gb of RAM is on the low end. I wished I had gotten 8gb, especially since RAM is no longer upgradeable. The HD5000 graphics is a nice improvement, but still not great for gaming, but at least for some games, it's reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised when I loaded World of Warcraft. I would recommend to anyone looking for a machine for basic tasks or for someone looking for a home theater PC. I loaded Plex on it and it runs very well, so I can connect to an HDTV to watch videos. Pricier than an Apple TV, but a lot more options or if you have an Apple TV, you can Airplay to it.

Chromebox on steriods and then some.

I purchased 2 of these Mini's for my home. So far, they are performing perfectly for what my family uses them for: running MS Office products, streaming movies, YouTubing, light gaming, and internet browsing. Obviously, there's nothing here that a Chromebox couldn't accomplish. However, for about the same price (as an upper end chromebox), you get an actual OS, Apple reliability and looks (this things looks sweet on your desk), and runs faster (IMO). Also, it syncs nicely with my iphone so that's a big plus. Bottom line, I'm happy with my purchase.

    Absolutely a phenomenal machine!

All I can say is why did it take me so many years to switch over to Macintosh? After enduring incessant Windows 10 updates and the regular frustration associated with dealing with Windows, I decided there must be something better out there. I bought this Mac out of frustration with Windows and let me tell you all my headaches are gone. Finally, an operating system, that unlike Windows, doesn't freeze up while randomly starting to install updates which brings ones productivity to a standstill -- The Macintosh operating system works and updates occur on your schedule. I will never buy another Windows machine again - Mac is awesome. And at this price point there is no reason why anyone should have to endure Windows!

I bought this mac mini to replace a prior one that was getting old (being proactive not because it died). I'm very satisfied with this one, although I kinda wish I had opted for the i7 version of it - the i5 has solid performance but some video functions are a tiny bit sluggish. The i7 processor would make a difference, but this does great for 99% of my need. I love the Apple mac products and the mac mini specifically.

    Great Computer for Home Office

The latest round of windows updates killed another PC. I was really tired of Windows so I decided to replace my windows desktop PC with this apple mini. It's great. It does everything I need and more for my home office. No driver software to deal with. I didn't have to do anything and it connected to my wireless printer. Love that you turn it on and it works. You don't have to wait 20 minutes for updates. I have a 3 monitor set up in my office and was able to use a universal docking station to set that up easily. The only problem I had was with the Monitors flickering when plugged into the HDMI port. I contacted AppleCare and after an update to the latest operating system that issue was solved. Now I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Oh and one warning...I was so used to flash player updates with my Windows PC that I accidentally fell for a fake flash player update and my Mac mini was infected with all these popups...the update popped up in the bottom corner where it would on a PC and I fell for it as kind of a reflex...so embarrassing. AppleCare was able to point me to some free software to remove it. Just be aware even though virus threats are less w/Mac they are still out there.

I purchased this device as an open box, upgraded it slightly and it now does everything I need it to do and very well. If you purchase this I would recommend a nice mouse, keyboard and display or two as well as an external ssd. With this setup, you can do everything except run high end gaming applications. This little computer has a handful of useful ports including USB, firewire, hdmi, audio/mic, and wireless/WiFi as well as bluetooth. Highly recommended for children, students, adults just starting out, users just starting out, a daily driver or a second machine. This computer runs osx and Windows 10 like a champ.

I love the Mac Mini. I believe that if you want a Mac it is the best way to get a system put together. I purchased two HP monitors to go with it and made it the best value for a Mac two monitor system.

If you want that Apple computer ability and durability but just have a hard time with the money, this is the product that gets you there. With comparable processor and abilities with any other machine in this price point, you still have the ease of Apple OS and reduced vulnerability. My one precaution is to make sure that you don't need more memory or hard drive space as this is not meant to be upgraded, but you can purchase it with the extra to begin with. Have had no problems and easy to use.

I use this computer for surfing the web and low key games, and I think that it is a very slow computer. I dislike that most files are not able to be downloaded to it because it is an Apple computer, and that it is only 1.4ghz. With only 4GB of ram, don't expect yourself to get far... the computer can't handle almost all of my needs, and it is a magnet for viruses like Mackeeper, and others.
