Arlo...have owned Arlo camera's for many years. When they converted this to a subscription model....I have been severely disappointed. Bought this Doorbell, forced an upgrade on the app, wanted to charge a subscription model monthly charge. Took it back. Horrible concept, horrible app upgrade....still have issues with app and current cameras. Periodically have to power down both systems, call arlo for resetting my account. Next camera purchases will be Blink probably.

The doorbell was very easy to install. There were step by step instructions in the app. It asked me questions like: will you be using this wired or wireless, will you be using the angled backing plate, which direction am I facing this, etc. I do not have an existing doorbell so I set it up to run off the battery. It seems to drain 1-2% of battery a day so I expect to charge this in a few months from now. Whenever you need to charge it you'll need to insert a tiny pin into the top to take it off from the mount. It charges with USB-C. It only records when it senses motion. I would imagine if this was wired it would be recording 24/7 but I'm unsure. You'll get a notification whenever the motion detector is triggered. One time it said the postman was a vehicle. However, besides that it is pretty good determining objects. Once you walk up to the doorbell the ringer button starts to glow. If you press it a voice call is initiated. My Google Home speaker will let me know someone is calling and on the app you can accept/deny. In terms of the livestream quality when you're taking a call or viewing the doorbell live, it can buffer for 5-10 seconds or be blurry when it shows the video feed sometimes. It is only five feet from my router. There is a couple walls in between it so I do not see why it can be bad sometimes. Since I'm experiencing the doorbell during the trial month I wonder what the device will be like outside the trial. I would have liked to try the doorbell without the trial to see how basic it can be but I do not believe that was an option. Here is what you get in the trial: • Emergency Response • Up to 2k Video Recording • 30 Days of Cloud Recording • Custom Activity Recording • Advanced Object Detection • Interactive, Rich Notifications Emergency response makes sense if you have other smart devices and camera's from them. Do not see what my doorbell alone could achieve. The 2k recordings looks like 720p so I'm afraid what lower quality will look like. It looks fine, you can make everything out but I don't see how this is called 2k. It is a wide camera at the least. How long would my recordings last if I loose the 30 days? Do I atleast get one day saved? That is all I think someone would need. The object detection can be wrong, from my example earlier. "Interactive, Rich Notifications" was not explained. Like, I got notified that their was a vehicle detected. Then I opened the notification and it was the postman. I'm more so rambling here because sure this product is great but after this trial how dumb does this smart device become? Do I need a plan? Do I need the $5/month plan? Or do I need the $25/month plan? Out of the box with the trial it's pretty good but time will tell after this first month.

This product deserves zero stars! The first one overheated after just 14 days, despite being on a covered porch in only 70-degree weather in April. The second one was even worse, lasting only 16 days before malfunctioning and making it impossible to communicate with the person ringing the doorbell Be aware that you can no longer return items to the store after 14 days from the date of purchase.

Camera with bells and whistles, needs improvement

A video doorbell meets two needs simultaneously. It needs to notify you when someone is at the door as well as recording what’s going on outside your house. Arlo’s doorbell does a much better job than most at notifying you of visitors. It’s not as good as others about recording without a subscription. As a doorbell, Arlo really hit it on the nose. Pressing the button starts a “call” from the doorbell to your phone. More than a notification, it keeps ringing until you answer or silence it. Answering gives you a live view of the door. You can use one of the canned answers (i.e. “We’re not interested.”) or speak live to your visitor. Sound quality from the door is fairly good. If you’re close to the door (within 25 feet), there’s a bit of feedback. I hope Arlo is able to fix that in a future firmware update. It’s not a big deal as most of the time I’m that close, I’ll just go to the door directly. Unfortunately, the “call” won’t let you use your bluetooth headset. You have to use the speakerphone for the call. It would be nice to have flexibility in case I wasn’t in a situation where I want to use speakerphone. The doorbell integrates nicely with Amazon and Google. Pressing the button causes chimes to sound on each device around my house, once they were linked. I even programmed it to pause the TV to really get my attention! I wasn't able to set up the two way audio with my Fire TV Cube. That only works on my phone. Installation was pretty straightforward. It comes with some extension wires in case your doorbell wiring is shorter than typical. The wire nuts are small enough to fit behind the doorbell bracket. The bracket causes the doorbell and camera to tilt slightly towards the door. This helps ensure each video captures your visitor perfectly. The camera is a wide angle, picking up the entire person even if they’re tall. It’s high enough resolution for the street to still look good, despite the wide angle. Recording is all in the cloud. A trial subscription is included for 30 days. Arlo sells a home base with a local recording option, but this 2nd generation video doorbell doesn’t support the home base yet. Picture quality is very good both during the day and at night. Night views are augmented by infrared LEDs illuminating the immediate area. Overall, Arlo delivers the bells and whistles you want at your front door. A few points off for execution in areas I hope can be addressed in the future.

This camera will only detect when something is close to the door. We have had an intruder on the property (we know this because the neighbor talked to us about it), but the camera didn't detect anything because the person did not walk right in front of it.

This 2k doorbell has a lot of kinks that does not allow it to work properly, specifically motion detection. We have waited for tech support to fix the issue for a month. Therefore have not been to utilize all the features this camera offers. Will not be using Arlo cameras anymore.

Enhanced 2cnd Generation of a Great Doorbell

I got this Arlo 2K (2cnd generation) unit to replace my Arlo Essential Wire Free Doorbell that has been an excellent unit for over 2 years. There were no issues with the current Arlo, I just decided to upgrade. The original Arlo Essential could also be installed wire free or hardwired just like the new Arlo 2K model. Both units look very similar with minor changes on the new 2K unit that makes it look sleeker and cleaner. The mounting holes are very close with just a slight difference in vertical spacing while the doorbell wires from the house connected easily to the new 2K model. I connected mine to my existing doorbell wires so I could still have a local doorbell. The existing wiring will trickle charge the battery in the Arlo when it’s not being used. There is no need for a larger doorbell transformer as the Arlo only uses the doorbell wiring for charging the battery. Extension wires, wire nuts, and mounting screws are provided. There is also an angled bracket for better visibility if your doorbell needs to be mounted to a side wall near your door. Included is a USB-A to USB-C cable for charging the internal battery if you elect to use wire-free connections. If hard wired to your existing doorbell system the internal battery become a backup battery in case of power failures. Most of the setup during installation is done via the Arlo app. The app pretty much walks you through step-by-step through the process. Most of the setup can be done at your kitchen table using the App and answering questions about your intended installation. I had no issues connecting to my Arris Surfboard Max Mesh system that uses one WIFI SSID for both 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands even though the Arlo only works on 2.4. After connecting to your internet, it will likely have you update the doorbell itself as well as the App to their newest version which gives you a Dashboard for easy arming when away, at home, and for standby. This is mostly used for installations where you are using Arlo cameras along with the doorbell. I found the installation very straight forward without any difficulties. It’s pretty easy to set up the sensitivity and test it during the installation or even after if you want to make changes down the road. This new model does have a wider view which easily shows the areas around the door better as well as a slightly sharper, brighter video especially at night. I also prefer the new design over the previous model as it is much clearer for the visitor to know where to push for the actual doorbell when they come to your door. When someone rings the Arlo, your inside doorbell will ring right away if you have the unit wired to your house doorbell. In addition, your phone will ring as an incoming phone call from the Arlo doorbell. If you answer that call you can then have a 2-way conservation with the person at the door along with a video from the Arlo. You can do this whether you are at home or away. If you don’t answer your phone, you can set up a pre-recorded message that will play to the person at the door. The response time to receive that call are short and you can easily catch the person at the door and converse unless it’s a ring and run like the delivery guys do. However, in those cases, you will still have a video with sound to play back within as few seconds after they have left the area so you see if they left a package. I also was able to set up Alexa with the Arlo to be able to view the front door on my command. I can ask Alexa to show the front door, using the name I had set up on the Arlo app for the doorbell. It takes a few seconds but it works and I find that handy to see if anything is at the door such as people or packages. Conclusion: I like the Arlo devices. The old one had been in use for over 2 years with no issues. I have always liked the straightforward list of recent videos by date and time within the App. The new one has added some updates with a larger field of view as well a higher resolution video and some App enhancements. I found the installation to be straightforward and everything I needed was in the box. I think the price point is right on. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone.

I havent been disappointed with Arlo's products but this one just gave me issues from the start. I couldnt get it to connect to my network. Once i got that figured out, the chat feature was awful. It reverberated my voice to a high pitch sound to the point i couldnt hear the end user. I returned the product hoping it was just a defect but again, with the new unit, i had the same issue.
