Modem Upgrade- Old to Newer Technology

We have Comcast as an internet provider and were told that we needed to upgrade our modem because our current modem was old technology. Reluctantly, I didn't want to spend money on another modem when it appeared our old one was working just fine. I bought this modem after a lot of research and seeking advice from a computer savvy family member. I had trouble activating the modem through Comcast, but I am not sure it was the modem but rather Comcast. It took me a lot of time to try to resolve the issue of the modem saying it was activated through Comcast's online activation versus in their system. After long phone calls back and forth with Comcast techs and after the modem was supposedly activated, we kept getting Comcast's "activate your device" web page for days later when we opened a new internet window. Our internet worked so it was just more annoying than anything else. I have noticed our internet seems the same or slower (we have the lowest/cheapest level tier service) and that our connection seems to flash disconnected periodically and then reconnects. I'm not sure if this is Comcast's service or the modem.

This modem has been very dependable going on 4 years and has gone through my Cox upgrades from 30Mbs to 50Mbs to 100+Mbs. I dont have reset it often and it was something that I didnt have to rent from the provider as a result. Highly recommended box!!!

    Good Modem!

This modem has great data transfer rates... more than my 100mb/sec plan pushes. After having it for a few days my only complaint (and reason for 4 stars) is the LED indicator lights on the front are obnoxiously bright at night and there is not button or switch to turn them off. I ended up just pushing the face into a corner so the blinking bright blue lights would not bother me.

    Meh

It’s a box you plug into your cable line and Ethernet. There’s really nothing to it for management. No Wi-Fi either. Get a good router for yourself to pair with this.

We have Comcast and this was surprisingly easy to setup. Wish I had done this a long time ago. Can't believe I rented a modem for as long as I did. Definitely would recommend this modem.

    Speeds Dropped Over Time

I may have gotten a bad device, but mine would appear to throttle my speeds to where they were under 1mbps download and upload. I would reset the device and the speeds would resume normally at 100mbps. I was sent another device from the manufacturer. They have very good customer service.

Good modem , but it's at the end of its life.

Don't get me wrong , this is a solid modem. However, it's over 4 years old. And , in tech time, that's a very long time. There are a lot of internet companies that no longer list this modem as being compatible. My advice is to go all in and get a SB8200.

    Drops internet

Bought this SB6141 Modem to replace my Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 based on some good reviews. This modem does not get along with my "N" Netgear WNR854T router, Keeps dropping internet esp when establishing connection to another computer. I had to reset power several times an hour. Neither My ISP, Motorola. Netgear nor forums could help fix the problem. Being a computer professional thought I could fix it but could only delay and crossed the exchange time period. Now I am in the market for another one. I had my friend test with his ISP did n't work either. If you buy this, make sure you test all scnarios with in the exchange time period. else you will be stuck with $100 paper weight.

Great item to do away with cable company's rentals

I was looking to do away with renting a modem from the cable company. Came across this modem on sale and also bought a magic jack for our home phone since we had a dual line modem for Internet and phone line. Saving myself some money now.
