Customers are saying

Customers admire the SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 High-Speed Cable Modem for its ease of use, performance, and affordability. Many appreciate the straightforward setup and compatibility with their internet providers, along with its compact size. While some experienced issues with the modem's WiFi capabilities and occasional overheating, the positive feedback on performance and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most users.

get this, but not the combo (gateway)

Love it. Have had it up and running for under a month, nonstop 24/7 action,, this thing runs faster than the 2.0. the setup was as eazy as plug it in and follow the onscreen setup …. I first tried to buy the combo (gateway) but that thing didn’t work at all. It all most made me not want to buy this standalone modem.. But I’m glad I did … fyi I have Comcast (performance) and I’m using it with the “netgear n600 wireless dual band router” something I would also give a 5/5….. all the lights on the front, kind of bothers me at night, but I guess it wasn’t designed for being in the bedroom… LOL

Started up and activated easily enough. Went on vacation for a week. Dead when I got home. Bought an unnecessarily faster Zoom for less, and it's been fine.

I would not recommend people buying this because the speed is significantly slower than other modems that I've used. Too basic and takes a long time to upload photos

Own your modem, don't rent it from TWC

I have been very pleased with this modem, and the price was reasonable. This modem was easy to install and has been functioning flawlessly. The only caveat I have is to be sure that it is supported by your internet cable company. So check that before your buy.

It seems that only equipment that was supplied by Comcast works with Comcast. I guess I have to continue to pay the rental fee or switch from Comcast.

May be difficult to use by some

I read all the reviews before purchasing this modem. The difficult part is the setup instructions which lacks clarity and detail. After installation and registration with my ISP, I did get the problem indicated by most of the negative reviews; offline drops and recycling. Only one part of the setup didn't make sense, the MTU. MTU=0 apparently means that the modem with auto sense the correct MTU setting of the ISP/NIC card or whatever. However, Cox MTU setting I assumed was 1500, some are set at 1492 others may differ, so I changed the MTU to 1500. I checked the event log prior to the change which indicated a lot of sync problems. After the change I've had no errors reported. The Modem/Router has been working perfectly now for 4 days without an error. FAST too 90mbps download, the highest, and 8 upload which depends on the server location. Hope this helps some. EK123

I bought this modem almost a year ago and i love it. I have had no problems with the modem. I upgraded from an older modem and my speeds went from in the 30's to the 50's that i was paying for. I even got up closer to 60 a couple times and was thrilled. I have never had a modem get me the speed or even faster than i was paying for from my isp. now it's on clearance and i wish i had a reason to buy a second.

    BETTER THAN WARNER CABLES

Does the job very well, does it better than the one issued by Warner (And charged every onto for). It connects easily, but you need to call Warner to give them the code numbers to activate it.

    Good Low End Modem

I was given this as a christmas present. Knowing nothing about Cable Modems I figured I had a good unit especially since Motorola isn't really known for making overly cheap products. It worked well for about the first year without any issues but as my Cable Provider (MediaCom) started making service upgrades to their servers and networking hubs to provide better high speed access to all their customers and further enter into the age of digital it started to falter. I ended up calling a Tech out 2 different times, Tech 1 thought that the signal was just too strong and it was overloading the modems abilities so he split it down further. Well that helped temperarily. until that go more into their upgrades. Called out Tech #2 and he did a review of the entire installation from the pole into the house and to the modem. He replaced a few bad cable connectors and a wrong cable (the first Tech used a Gel filled Satellite TV cable designed for Outdoors use that when it gets hot inside a house the gel interior interferes with the wires). He was probably here a good 30 min going over everything and rechecking the modem signals. With all that work done the signals were still bouncing and he provided the recommendation of upgrading the modem. While the SB6121 is a good modem is just cannot handle the level of data that the provider sends out. While this modem says it can do 8 Download it actually handles just barely above 4 DL streams which he said is what causes the issue to occur. He recommended upgrade to the next unit up SB6141 which does a true 8 stream down and what he personally uses and resolved the same issue he used to have which I'm experiencing. I inquired about the 3rd step up with say sit handles 16 DL and was advises that almost all cable providers currently are at a max of 8; nobody has pushing out on more than 8 streams down as they've yet to even max that load. Long Story Short again...Good low end modem buut if you have a major provider for your HSI then go with the next product up for 90 bucks.

    Excellent DOCSIS 3 Modem Choice

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I am a Comcast subscriber (15Mbps down/2Mbps up) and was having intermittent latency and terrible download speeds - sometimes less than 1Mbps down, however, 4Mbps upload speeds have been consistent throughout my problems. Weird. Tech came out and tested the lines and everything was up to spec. Replaced the old Comcast supplied DOCSIS 2 device with this Motorola modem and instantly realized CONSISTENT down speeds of 25Mbps. The "Powerboost" may have something to do with the higher than provisioned speeds, but I will take it. I have been observing the speeds since installation and the speeds are steady at 25Mbps/4Mbps. Setup was clean and easy. I will note that when initially connected, the modem restarted about 6-7 times before it fully registered on the provider network, but afterwards, the Comcast self-activation screen was available from the browser and setup was a snap (be sure to connect directly to the modem during initial setup and then connect through your wifi router, etc. when it is activated). Great product. Very pleased.

    Replaced Xfinity's Modem

Xfinity - Be Patient. First boot set-up took more than 20 minutes. Reboot and wait cycle(s). Just connect it and wait. I checked back later after dinner and all was fine. Followed Xfinity's on-line instructions, never needed a support person, just the MAC number. Issue: would not connect directly to my Ubuntu PC. Worked fine through my router though (WRT54GL). Again patience required. Speed test both before swapping modem and after - around 37 Mbs - varies +/- 5 with multiple tests. Pays for itself in less than 7 months vs rented unit. Saves another $170 over the two year Xfinity contract. Excellent store in Beaverton, OR.

    Quality performance and easy setup

I purchased this modem about 6 weeks ago to replace my old motorola router which was purchased back in 2005. No point in paying the Comcast $7 rental fee which is basically highway robbery. My old router was DOCSIS2.0 and worked really well but wasn't the at the latest DOCSIS3.0 standard that this new modem is at. This new motorola surfboard was easy to setup and has worked perfectly since I purchased it. All I had to do for setup was call Comcast and get it registered which took about 10 minutes over the phone. I have no complaints about this model so far. I would recommend to anyone who has an old DOCSIS 2.0 modem to upgrade to this modem based off price, performance, and ease of setup.

    Decent quality modem for price

Modem was very easy to hook up and get started. It did require activation with service provider which was a hassle but obviously that is nothing against the product itself. I was expecting slightly better download speeds as I had previously been using a rental modem that was over 4 years old but there was zero impact with my speed. My connection does appear to be more stable now. I would purchase this item again and it's definitely better than paying $8 a month to rent one from Comcast.

    Tripled my Charter Internet Speeds!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased this cable modem about 2 weeks ago and I am extremely happy with it. I immediately received a speed increase on my download and upload. I currently am a Charter Internet customer and am paying for 15Mbs (download) and 3Mbs (upload) speeds. Prior to upgrading from my old linksys modem, my speeds were consistently at or slightly under those speeds. However, after the upgrade I consistently obtain 38Mbs (sometimes faster) download and a solid 4.5 upload speed. The setup couldn't have been easier. As soon as I plugged it in Charter recognized the change and asked for my new modem information and I was good to go. No problems after two weeks.
