Many appreciate the straightforward setup and compatibility with their internet providers, along with its compact size. Work great out of the box. I have installed and used other Motorola in the past and this product did not disappoint. This product was rated well by my cable provider and I am very pleased with its performance.

Works well, install hard, but cable co problems

Most people don't have much to say about a modem. It either works or it doesn't and this is no exception. It is now working as advertised and the throughput is great. I get 25Mbps download speeds off the cable with no problem. The setup is trivial, but I did have many headaches the first day when setting up with a hardware firewall. It seemed to work ok when plugged directly into a laptop, but then would fail when firewall inserted - as if it detected hardware change and then would only take me to an "activation page" for the cable company. Support was useless since they only help you with a direct connection - something any sane person would want to avoid! Somehow it magically worked a day later and then became innocuous, as it should be!

    Definite improvement from old modem...

Worked fine out of the box...one call to cable co. and no more of the "internet not available" that was plaguing my wife and I. It also stands up and looks better on desk, nicer status indicator lights than my old one. It is, so far, a welcome replacement! I like the name "surfboard".

Bought this to replace a 5yo Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2. Really no set up necessary - simply called cable co. (Blue Ridge w/ PennTeleData) and gave them the MAC ID. Modem was connected within 3 minutes. At the same time, I upgraded service from 15MB down/2MB up to 50MB down/5MB up. With old modem and service, a speed test gave me 11.5/.9. This modem with new service running 47.11/4.93, and thats over wireless! Getting everything i'm paying the cable co. for... Of course, it went on sale the week after I bought it which is why I knocked a star off the value - if BB makes good on it I'll bump it to 5!

Steer Clear - Buy a dedicated Cable Modem & Router

    Posted .

Steer clear of this Motorola SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0. combo cable modem and wireless router. Although the Cable Modem portion of this combination Modem/Router works fine (even after your Cable Provider overwrites the binary file to allow access to their head end) the Wireless functions for about 20 minutes and craps out. As others have written this device runs hot. I would not even consider placing this unit in indirect sunlight never mind limited direct sunlight. The wireless transmitter/receiver is the main culprit. I believe the unit overheats while operational with the wireless modem turned on. The first functionality or capability to suffer from the overheating? You guessed it, the wireless access point and router. Adjusting the power output of the wireless access point transmission would reduce the power consumed and thus in theory reduce the temperature this unit operates at and could also prevent overheating. The sad truth is the .bin file update your cable provider loads onto the device (affecting the features and options you can modify for both the cable modem and the wireless router) removes the control you would have to reconfigure the device to provide any level of potential stability - I.E. reducing the power output of the WAP. Steer clear and purchase a separate Cable Modem (Motorola) and a Wireless router (Netgear). I returned this after a day spent trying to make it work and purchased the aforementioned components.

While this model may be $20 less than the step up SB6141 modem, you lose capability with this model. This is what's known as a "4x4" DOCSIS 3 modem - as in you get 4 downstream and 4 upstream connections. This limits the fastest download connection speeds of the modem to 160 megabits, theoretically; most cable companies will actually limit your connection speed to somewhere around 140 megabits with this modem and require that you purchase or rent an "8x4" modem (like the 6141, which is $20 more) to receive the faster connection speeds.
