Future-Proof good combo unit…

Future-Proof good combo unit… please note there is no phone jack on this unit, so landline will not be coming from your ISP through a traditional phone connection. For those who are looking to drop traditional land-lines, this should not be an issue. NOTE: ISP is COX – this unit is on their list of approved equipment.
Before installing be sure to get your HFC MAC ID off the bar code label on the package, you will need that when you call the cable company to authorize this modem/router or when swapping out for previous equipment.
Some have reported that it is a “plug and connect” system where the ISP will automatically pick up the DOCSIS signal and synchronize with the new modem signal to swap your service over without intervention by a human being. This may work for some but I highly recommend getting on the phone with your service provider to ensure a smooth activation and/or equipment switch.
This unit replaced a separate ISP-provided modem linked to a WRT3200ACM router. The router was dual-band and a fairly recent model, so there was no significant improvement in bandwidth or service to the electronic devices (TV, tablet, phone, laptop, chromebook) already in use. Please understand I am not saying that the Arris is not faster than the router it replaced, I am saying that the old router was providing needed bandwidth FOR THE MOMENT, although the specs for the Arris very definitely indicate that the need for higher bandwidth and speeds in the future will be adequately handled by this gateway device.
That being said, this unit was not an absolute necessity at the moment, as it replaced a system that was working well, but included the land-line capability. The reason for the upgrade was two-fold:
1 – dropping the land-line and would have to swap modems anyway, with a rental fee on the “non-phone” modem provided by the ISP (your mileage may vary) – so this unit eliminated the monthly fees for the ISP modem;
2 – upgrade to DOCSIS 3.1 capability that isn’t a game-changer at the moment but will come into play with ISP offerings for super-bandwidth and super-speed capabilities. The DOCSIS 3.1 will be the roll-out for the next few years (at least) so if one is purchasing new equipment, why not go ahead and get settled in with a unit that won’t need replacing or upgrading for many years.
Bottom line, if you are going to drop the land-line and would like to invest in equipment that is simpler to use, more compact (1 unit instead of 2 separate units), and ready for future upgrades, then this is a good choice to meet those needs.

Arris SBG8300 Surfboard DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and WI-FI router review. This unit is for Cox, Charter, and Xfinity customers. I have Xfinity. Arris makes the modems for Xfinity. However this unit is a big step up in performance. This thing will get you future proof for a modem and router. This unit has gig speed capability, if it's available to you from your provider. Your current router can't do that. And you will save the monthly charge for modem rental from your current service provider.
If you have never installed a router modem before, there is a bit of a learning curve. The most important thing I found is to follow the instructions to the letter. If it says to wait on the lights to blink a certian way, then wait. I was impatient and nothing happened. The process for install is pretty simple and straight forward, just take your time and follow instructions to the letter. After connecting to the web, the device management page for this unit is where you will go first. This page will allow you to set up all the parameters for your new modem. The site is nice and easy to use. If you have questions, there are comprehensive explanations for each setting. Yes, you will spend a few minutes learning and setting things up, but its mostly a one time deal. There is an app option for your phone, so you can interface with the unit as well.
Some people said that they had to call their service provider to hook up this unit. That was not my experience. I simply followed the book and it was up and running with no problems. Of course, that's after I decided to follow the instructions correctly. I received an email from Xfinity a little while later stating my bill would be reduced the amount of the modem rental I currently pay. However, I will need to call them to return their equipment. I only thought I saved myself from sitting on hold.
In conclusion, this modem router combo is fast and reliable so far. And even though its more powerful than the unit Xfinity gave me, its actually smaller in size. Also it has less flashing lights on it. Only two lights, one for power and one for wi-fi.
Overall I am completely satisfied with the Arris.

The box for the Arris SBG8300 Cable Modem & Wi-Fi Router contains the modem/router, power supply, Ethernet cable, Quick Start Guide, and Warranty Guide. I'm using my device with Cox Cable, replacing the modem that they normally install. The entire setup took less than 30 minutes. It is clearly spelled out step by step in the Quick Start Guide and is very easy to follow. I setup my modem using my Android cell phone. You can also set it up using an iPhone or a web browser on your PC. To use your phone, simply scan the included QR Code to download the application.
Once you have the device setup, you will have 2G and 5G network connections as well as 2G and 5G guest networks. This allows you to provide Internet access to your friends when they visit, but keep your home network protected. I ran speed test swith the old cable modem and the Arris SBG3800 and was pleased to see that the Arris provided faster upload and download speeds on a consistent basis. I saw regular increases of up to 30% for downloads and in many cases over 100% increase in upload speeds.
The Arris SBG8300 Cable Modem & Wi-Fi Router provides excellent 802.11ac Wave 2 signal strength throughout my house. It also has 4 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports and is ideal for use with Gigabit+ Cable Internet packages. It is DOCSIS 3.1 compliant for speeds of 10+ Gbps.
I highly recommend this device for everyone from the home novice to the small business network technologist.

The Arris Surfboard cable modem combo is a fairly decent router/ modem combo, but it is not for everyone. While Arris did incorporate some good technology into this box, they did manage to leave out some necessary features.
First off the Surfboard is about the size of a Cox contour cable box, only a lot lighter. In fact, the box doesn't weigh that much at all. On the front of the box there are 2 lights, one for the internet and the other for wifi. On the back there are 4 gigabit ethernet ports, as well as the power port. Arris kept it pretty simple in this department. The set up is very easy and straight forward, even for those who aren't very tech savvy. The best way to set this up,(in my option) is hardwired through a laptop or PC/Mac. Once you set up your wifi and password, then I recommend downloading the app. The Arris app is also very good. It pretty much has every feature one would need to monitor and explore their network, not to mention it is very easy to navigate and understand. For example, You can edit you wifi networks names and passwords right from the home screen. There is a network map which lets you see all the devices on your network, as well as edit the names. A speed test, that is probably the most detailed and accurate one I've ever used. There is also a feature called wifi spot meter, this lets you walk around your room to see where the wifi signal is weak. Although, I couldn't get the meter to work on my phone.
As far as the performance goes...If you are hardwired into the Surfboard, then you can expect to get speeds at around 920mbps and up. On the other hand, the wifi is a different story. The biggest problem I have with this unit, is the lack of MU-MIMO. With MU-MIMO, you are able to not only stream in 4K in one room, online game in another, and browse the internet - all at the same time without seeing a dip in speed. Not to mention there is a significant increase in wifi range especially on the 5ghz network. Unfortunately, this combo does not have that feature, and you will definitely notice a difference. For me I noticed the rapid drop in speeds after I connected my 3rd device to the wifi, while trying to use them simultaneously, I notice that the download speeds dropped to a 1/4 of what they were before. I also have noticed the range is not quite as far on this as well, this barely covers a 3rd of my house without loosing signal on the 5ghz. While you can buy a wifi range extender to extend the coverage, at that price point you're better off just buying a separate modem and router with better coverage for the same price.
Overall, the surfboard is a solid unit with limits. Would I recommend it to people...? That depends on the person and their environment. For people that live in a smaller home, only have a handful of devices connected to their network, and plan on hardwiring most of their devices to the internet... Then yes, this is a good choice. But if you're someone that has a bigger home with a lot of wifi devices connected to your network, then I would not recommend using this combo.
