Forward thinking modem/router ready for the future

I currently own a SURFboard SB6121 and have noticed a few hiccups during heavy data traffic, such as a movie picture that starts out blurry and continually refreshes until it’s crisp. I was glad to find a such a huge improvement on the number of downstream and upstream channels and download speeds with this new model SBG8300. Installing this modem/router was pretty easy. I had to call my cable company to add the modem to their system, but that only took a few minutes. I then began following the directions, but realized my laptop does not have a LAN port, so I completed the setup using Wi-Fi. The only issue I ran into was that I have a firewall, and I could not figure out how to use it with a modem/router combo. I went into the device settings using the IP address and changed it to Bridge Mode so that I could keep my firewall. I could not figure out how to use the built-in Wi-Fi, so I am using my old router. Pros Easy to setup or replace an old cable modem Great upload/download speeds Cons Cannot use a firewall without using Bridge Mode and separate router No Wi-Fi pairing button (do not really need) I would recommend this SURFboard/router for anyone who wants the latest and fastest technology and does not have a firewall. If you use a firewall, I would consider getting a standalone modem and a router.

    Not reliable

We have Comcast gigabit internet. We have always rented their router, but we have never really been able to get close to gigabit speeds. We decided to go ahead and buy this router at the recommendation of the Best Buy sales guy. We wanted something that would be reliable and increase our speed. Boy was this choice a poor one. Setup was very easy, even for someone with little IT experience. Before we switched routers our speeds were 490MBPS, after we switched we are sitting at 290MBPS. The first 3 hours were interesting getting everything set up as we went through many resets to get the password to work. It continued to say wrong password, even though it was correct. After a couple resets, it finally started working. Since then, the router will loose connection frequently, and needs to be restarted. The router does not like our printer for whatever reason, it will connect, then immediately drop off. While working on work projects, I have had to restart the router many times because during the course of just a few hours, I have consistently lost connection, preventing me from saving to a separation storage drive. All this to say, I am not impressed with the performance of this router. At least with the xfinity router it never dropped off. I thought xfinitys equipment was a little slow, but apparently it much faster than this one. We will be returning it and looking at something else, or reconnecting the xfinity router.

If you're thinking of upgrading to the Gigabit Internet, I would HIGHLY recommend this cable modem in a heartbeat! I have ran a speed test multiple times and gotten consistent speed ratings of 980/32 range (I have Spectrum and their "gigabit" is 940/30). Easy setup, had to call to activate with Spectrum, however, the interface and app needed to setup the WiFi on this modem is very buggy. I only wanted the modem, so I disabled the router part to utilize a mesh routing setup I had already had in placed. It's a bit pricey, but it is also very much future proof. Modem 5/5 Router 2/5

I got tired of paying a monthly rental fee to my cable company so after years of paying I decided to get my own modem. This Arris Surfboard SBG8300 DOCSIS 3.1 modem has a lot of benefits to it that the one rented from my cable company doesn't have. It has a built in AC2350 Wave 2 WiFi router and 4 ethernet jacks. It can be configured using a web interface or an app called Arris Surfboard Manager available for iOS or Android to change the settings or I can just use my Amazon Echo by asking Alexa to control various settings. Although I have 400Mbps service and can usually get a download speed of 404Mbps and 39Mbps upload speed, I don't see any real speed increase over my previous modem. I have heard that my cable company will be upgrading the speed to 1Gbps hopefully in my area by the end of the year and that's when this modem will really shine as the back of the box says it can download at speeds up to 10+ Gbps. For now it's great for 4K video streaming and online gaming. One thing I didn't think of when getting this modem is that I get my phone service through my cable provider as well and this modem does not have phone capability. Luckily I have my calls forwarded to my cell so for now I can still use the voice service. I have to decide if I still need a second "landline" in which case I might subscribe to another service like MagicJack or Ooma. This seems to be the top of the line modem available right now and as long as I can save the rental fee, I'm happy with it.

This is a really smart option for anyone who plans to stick with there cable internet provider. At anywhere from $5-$10 a month for box rental fees, this unit will pay for itself within a couple of years and it is far more advanced than the rental boxes. The unit itself looks like a typical wi-fi router. The fact that you are getting a modem and router in one unit is awesome! A lot less clutter. The wi-fi signal so far looks to be solid. I've walked around the house and in the yard to test the signal and although maybe not quite as good as a dedicated router, it isn't far off. And as to be expected in this day and age, you are getting both 2.4Ghz and 5.0GHZ. Set up was a breeze. It is listed as being compatible with most internet cable providers (although I would check with your provider first). I use Charter Spectrum and had no issues. Just hook it up and give them a call. A few minutes of them doing the voodoo that they do do and you are up in running. Pretty much plug & play outside of the phone call. Now as far as your internet speeds go, it is hard to say if you will get any improvement. More than likely the Surfboard can handle far higher speeds than what your provider can give you. With that said, I have seen no reduction when running some internet speed tests. The fact that it is DOCSIS 3.1 and has four 1-gigabit Ethernet ports means that you are pretty much future proof for a good number of years. So save yourself some money on the already high internet prices by picking one up and cutting the rental fees!

If you’ve got a gigabit Ethernet plan, then you’ve got a great reason to think about using a modem/router combo like the ARRIS Surfboard SBG8300. And if you have several high-bandwidth devices connecting to your network, then you’ll be able to appreciate a lot of the speed advantages for certain. The Good: 1. Installation was a breeze. 2. Xfinity Voice works with no issues 3. I have a 3000 Sq. Ft. house and internet coverage has been good. 4. No sign of heat issues that some others have reported. The Not so Good 1. I have (up to) 1000 Mbps Xfinity Gigabit Speed internet service but I'm only seeing 350-387 Mbps download speeds. It's too soon to say that it's only the modem, so I'll be talking to support. 2. $299.99 price tag. Yikes!

Excellent. It seems to be working like it should. My internet speed is super fast with this and Xfinity at it's lowest priced speed which is more than enough. I used to have Att Uverse which was fine until they offered me a so called free upgrade to fiber and a $50 gift card. Well it wasn't any faster and they never sent me the card and when they installed the fiber they left a bunch of wire under my computer desk which got pulled out with my feet. If I was going to pay a tech for a service charge to come out and fix it I might as well have them hook up a totally new service like Xfinity. My co-workers recommended Xfinity and by buying my own modem I'll be saving money on monthly rental charges which ATT never offered. Best Buy was selling this for the same price as Amazon but I like the fact that if I had to return it I have a Best Buy 1.5 miles away and wouldn't have to deal with shipping it back.

I'm giving this Arris modem/router 5 out of 5 but that doesn't mean that setting it up didn't have its difficulties. However, I think that was more of an Xfinity issue, not the actual Arris, which is why I'm not taking off any stars. Out of the box, this modem/router looks very similar to the standard equipment you get from Xfinity (although it was a little smaller, which I like). Installation was a breeze. I unscrewed the coax cable from my old modem/router, attached it to the new one, plugged in the power, and hook-up was complete. I was also able to easily download the Arris Surfboard app and rename my Wifi network and create my own passwords. Instructions included were to the point and very helpful. My problem came when I actually tried to connect to the Internet through my Xfinity account. My Xfinity account said that I needed to deactivate my old modem (the one I was renting from them) in order to set up the new one. I tried to do this several times and finally had to call Xfinity support for assistance. The guy I talked to said that for some reason he wasn't able to deactivate the old modem/router either, and I'd have to return it to an Xfinity store to be deactivated before I could set up the new one. I had to return the old modem anyway, so not a big deal. This worked and when I got home, I reconnected everything to the new Arris, set up my new network, and had everything back on my new network in a very short period of time. Internet speeds are good, I haven't had any connectivity issues, and I'm no longer paying the monthly rental fee to Xfinity for my old modem/router. Very happy with the Arris once I got it up and running.

I am using the SBG8300 to replace an older cable modem that is separate from my wi-fi router system. When I purchased my old cable modem, I was impressed by the increase in internet performance over the trashy modem I had been renting - but my download and upload speeds never quite measured up to the speeds I was supposed to be getting. This SURFboard is capable of handling MUCH faster internet access than I have right not - so I can't speak to how it handles things outside what I have available. But I can definitely say that it gave me access to my full range of internet (download/upload) speed. Setup is simple and straightforward. I have only two complaints. One substantive: I was a little disappointed in the wi-fi range - my current (Orbi) system screams-out to the whole neighborhood but wi-fi on this left me with some problem areas around my house. One not substantive: It's fast, but it's surprisingly large (?) - not sure what's going on inside that requires that much architecture.

So I unboxed this unit tonight knowing it was bound to be a bit of a headache. Networking always is. First off, out of the box you get the modem/router, power supply and a lan cable. I didn't use it, but looking at it, it looks like a 6 footer, but maybe a 3'. I disconnect the 75ohm cable from my Spectrum router and attached it to the new Arris unit. Then I attached the lan cable from my PC to the unit and lastly powered it up. I waited for the lights to turn steady green, it starts out blue, flashing light blue, flashing green and then steady green. There's just 2 lights, WWW globe and WiFi rainbow. I got the steady green and try to open surfboard.com, but no bueno. As instructed, I contacted Spectrum and through some miracle, I got a wonderful agent that helped me. It took about 15 minutes to authorize the unit and when we were done it said not authorized, start over. She was wondering why, since I guess she did everything right and it showed okay on her end. She had me reboot the modem and tada, webpage opened up. If that was all I needed to do, I would have been giddy. Sadly, I have multiple items using my home network. Many are on wireless and have the old router network and password. My old router is a tank, the Linksys EA 9500 with 8 gigaports. I have an Arlo security system, my den switch with 4 systems hooked to it, a mac mini, a few printers and more wired in. So I needed/wanted to use the old tank in bridge mode. I found a setup guide on Linksys' website and once I figured out the wiring and how to access the setup webpage, I was good. All the old network WiFi connection work off the old passwords and some of them I reconnected with the new. I must say that my Best Buy Insignia/Roku tv in the bedroom connects much faster than before. All the wired systems are working through the old Linksys and the new Arris. I connected the Arlo cameras to the Arris and the system seems more snappy and responsive. I've had issues with them dropping signal or taking forever to load live view. If tonight is any indication, I'm going to be much happier with the cameras now, thanks to the Arris modem/router. I'm not sure what else you can say about a plastic box that just sits in the corner of the desk, but everything I tried seems to work and if it stays this way, I'll be very happy. Oh and the setup book is fairly small, but follow the steps and you'll be up and running in less than a half hour (unless you get an agent that isn't up to the task). I say again, I was lucky :o) I'd recommend this to anyone in need of a cable modem and if you have less than 4 lan addon or need a WiFi network, this is for you. Lastly, this is a cable modem, not DSL or Satellite service.

After decades of Ethernet cable connection, this device is the very first Wi-Fi thing, whatever you call it, to work satisfactorily and without flaw at my condominium townhouse with neighbours, tooth-to-jowl. After a couple of Wi-Fi attempts since year 2000, the turn of the millennium, all praise should go to my Best Buy Geek Squad who finally, cleaned up, my wireless problem(s) and got the household system finally/actually working as it should. Thank You Best Buy!!!

This modem/router will not work for cable company’s telephone service but if you are like most of anymore, home phones are not an issue anymore. The setup of the device and network were quite easy after a phone call to cable company to add the modems address to our service. The only thing I wasn’t able to accomplish was connecting it to Alexa to check out what features she adds to this device.

It's been in use for 9 weeks and works perfectly in an apartment for my sister. It's faster than the rental unit she was using. I found out while I was trying to find an exact replacement on ebay for the Comcast rental unit that the rental unit is specially made for Comcast and is not sold to the public. Even after chatting with Comcast agents several times, I didn't realize that until finally one agent told me. You won't be able to connect a unit they own unless you pay the rental fee, and it may take 30 days to clear the rental unit you thought was yours.
