The internet installation guy commented on what a nice purchase I made. He said that we are set if any upgrades come in the future. It is doing an excellent job with my equipment. No issues. I have it installed in my basement, so I am using a WiFi extender.

Excellent, reliable wifi, comprehensive and easy-to-use admin portal. (Not sure about maximum range, but there is perfect signal coverage in my 650sqft, 1-bedroom apartment.)

I chose this over the comparable Netgear for the 2 year warranty and better range. So far so good. Way better than the Comcast router we had.

    Arris Surfboard 3.1 DOCSIS Gateway

Gateway was purchased as the leased unit from Suddenlink was the pits. Arris surfboard is more reliable as for better consistent levels. Also the Surfboard App lets you check incoming signal download and upload pass.

I spent 3 hours on the phone with Arris. They where changing channels, going back and forth with different bands and I finally gave up. I have Comcast on a 800 mps plan. I currently rent there newest gateway and was trying to save $ 14 month rental fee. I also have an Apple Macbook Pro M1 that is wifi6. With the Comcast unit, I am getting 800 mps most of the time. This Arris is getting maybe 400 mps. Why buy a gateway that decreases the speed that I pay for ? Speed is expensive. So I am returning it and do not need all the frustration of setting it up. I will purchase ( maybe ) a different brand that supports DOCSIS 3-1 and has wifi 6. These two items are the future and do make a big difference. But you do need a wifi 6 laptop to get the best results. Arris today does not have a combo unit that has both docsis 3-1 and wifi 6. yet. Netgear does. So if you do go through what I did, be ready for some frustrations. Look elsewhere as there are better options ( for the money ) Comcast's gateway that is docsis 3-1 & wifi 6 works great, but it is expensive to rent. It should be included in there pricing / plan. Like buying beer but you pay extra for the glass. Nutz.

The aaris surfboard is one if the best. I have comcast internet and after hooking this up I noticed a better speed right away. The router is decent for a all in one combo. I still prefer to have a separate router but for the normal home use the router built in is quite sufficient.

Good modem, Wifi could be better

I was in the process of switching internet providers when I ordered this to avoid paying a monthly fee to rent the internet company. I finally switched from Spectrum to Wow, yesterday and I know that Arris is a big player in the modem market so I assumed this would be a better replacement than the one provide. The box is about the same size as the one provided by WOW, which is to say it’s a pretty decent sized box. It does have four Ethernet ports on the back, which is a plus, but no USB input for added networking. For a router at this price point, I would think that would be standard. Setup was painless and it actually took me more time to get through to my provider than it did to get up and running. I was hoping this would provide enough coverage to allow me to unplug my Orbi mesh router, but of course it did not. My home is about 3500 square feet, not including the basement and the signal was fine on the main floor, but trailed off a bit on the second floor as well as the basement. However, when I turned off the router’s wifi and connected to the Orbi, my signal improved significantly. This modem broadcasts in both 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz which is pretty standard but does not support MIMO. When I switched providers, I upgraded to 500mbps download from the 100mbps I had previously and I didn’t notice any significant increases or decreases in upload and download speeds. So honestly, other than saving me $10/month on my bill, there is no real benefit to this modem in my situation. Then I found out that when I added WOW’s whole home DVR service, the modem was included in the package, so there is even less benefit for me with this modem. Based upon my needs and usage, I would not recommend this modem. I reconnected the modem from my provider and will keep this as a backup in the event my situation changes. At $300, if I was paying the $10 monthly fee for the provider, it would take me 2 1/2 years to get my money back and by then, there will be something better with more features on the market. It is a good modem, but the wifi connection isn’t that great. I would look elsewhere.

I absolutely love this modem/router I purchased for our Xfinity service. It was easy to set up and works terrific. I replaced an old router and modem which was not working well with Xfinity and now our internet connection is great. I highly recommend this unit looking to purchase your own equipment instead of paying rental fees.

I haven’t had any issues so far. The Geek Squad set it up for me for I wouldn’t have been able to do it. I have a two bedroom condo, it’s plenty enough strength and range.

    Customer Service is a Nightmare

Arris customer service is absolutely terrible, and makes their entire line of products worth avoiding. When the modem works, it does what it needs to do with little to no complaint. However, when you find yourself in a situation where you have to deal with their customer service--then you'll find yourself wishing you had bought from any one of their competitors. Our Surfboard SBG8300 stopped providing internet while under warranty. It still recieved and recognized that it was getting power, but neither the wifi nor an ethernet cord provided internet. I made the first available appointment with my ISP (3 days out) and also spoke with one of their tech's over the phone to troubleshoot some issues. All indications were that the modem failed, but they were still coming out to see it in person at the appointment. I then followed up with Arris. Over the course of the phone call we ran through more troubleshooting: trying to power cycle at different intervals, trying the ethernet cord instead of wifi, and finishing by trying to run a factory reset. Everything failed. They said that in order to proceed with getting a replacement I would need to have my ISP out to confirm the signal strength coming into the house and report back, providing me with a case number for future reference. My ISP tech came out for the appoint, confirmed the signal strength was very strong, and even hooked up a rental modem which worked immediately. I then called Arris back providing them with my case number from my previous call with them. The notes the previous representative took weren't accurate, we were forced through over an hours worth of failed troubleshooting, much of which I already did with an Arris rep the previous day, broken up with holds for the rep to speak with her supervisor which felt more and more like a used car salesman going into the back to "speak with my manager." At the conclusion of this hour plus long phone call the rep was now saying that I needed to make another appointment with my ISP so they can reconfigure my internet and modem. When I asked if I can speak with the supervisor the rep just got finished talking too for clarification, I was told that they had just taken another phone call and that I should just schedule another appointment with my ISP. I told the rep that I am more than happy to wait on hold for them to finish their phone call. After a little more of a back and forth, the rep took my number down and said a supervisor will give me a call within the hour. With how important reliable home internet access is, especially in todays world, there is no way to justify buying from a company that makes the process of replacing a failed product this time consuming and difficult.
