Constant Freezing
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was so excited in finding this on deal of the day.Great features and great hardware for the price. After receiving this laptop I noticed after restarting the computer after a cold boot the computer would completely freeze no input at all. After a couple of calls with Asus for troubleshooting I eventually had to send to for service. Also Best Buy needs to have a extend the return policy, especially for big ticket items.

Disappointed
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Started shutting down immediately after using it. I exchanged it for another one and the same thing occurred. I was extremely disappointed because when it was as working it was super fast.

Fantastic laptop, until touchpad failed in 3 weeks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a bittersweet review. I have had Asus laptops since they first hit the market and have had nothing but stellar experiences. My old U56E-BBL6 lasted forever and in fact still functions today without any major problems (unless you consider being slower due to it being 5 years old a "major problem"). But I finally decided to leave the dark ages of my old ASUS and move up to a new age model. I chose the Q504UA series because of the incredibly powerful specs relative to the price, especially compared to many of the other comparable brands (i.e., more RAM for your buck than Dell, Lenovo and HP). I started out my Q504UA journey by purchasing the i5 model. Very aesthetically pleasing laptop and everything on the laptop just seems to be in the perfect place. However, after unboxing, doing all the updates and having barely installed many new apps, the laptop was seriously laggy performing basic word processing, spreadsheet and internet browsing functions. Due to the nature of my job, I need a fast and reliable laptop, so I took it back to Best Buy and the GM was incredibly helpful and accommodating, offering to give me any laptop I wanted in the store at the lowest ever sale price. I really just wanted to upgrade to the Q504UAK (the i7 version of this laptop), wanting to stick with a trusty ASUS and hoping the solid state drive would make the difference in terms of speeding things up for me. But it had never been on sale (nor did it even go on sale for Black Friday), so he graciously took $50 off the price for me. Honestly, the Q504UAK was the best laptop I've ever used. Quick as lightning, screen is bright and vibrant, 2-in-1 function is convenient and responsive, and handled multiple applications with ease. It was exactly what I'd hoped for. Then 19 days went by of normal, routine use. One night while using it to create an Excel spreadsheet, I suddenly received a BSOD (blue screen of death), which read: "Stop Code: "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL . . . What Failed: AsusPTPFilter.sys." Annoyed, I allowed the computer to restart, booted up like normal and continued working on my spreadsheet. Then 10 minutes later the same thing happened. I shut the computer all the way down, rebooted it and once again and continued working. But then a few short minutes later, it happened yet again. This time, getting back to work wouldn't be as easy as letting it restart; in fact, the laptop never recovered. The computer restarted, and then while attempted to restart went to the BSOD before I could even get to the home screen. I did a force-shut down and let the computer sit for about 20 minutes. When I restarted, it thankfully got to the home screen and everything seemed normal. Au contraire -- the touchpad wasn't working, at all; touching it did absolutely nothing. I could still use the touchscreen to navigate, but I needed the mouse and touchpad for the spreadsheet I was working on (not to mention I'm not going to accept having a brand new ~$1,000 laptop without a functioning touchpad. So I restarted again. Once it got to the welcome screen, I gently placed my finger on the touchpad to click the left button and I immediately got the BSOD again. I restarted a few more times to determine if I could recreate the issue of causing a BSOD by merely contacting the touchpad. Sure enough, each time I made contact with the touchpad, it resulted in an immeidate BSOD. Then after about 4 rounds of that little game, I restarted and the touchpad was completely donezo - it did nothing when you touched it - this time for good. I Googled the issue and saw that others have had problems with ASUS touchpad on 2-in-1 ASUS laptops (and some other brands, as well). The problem is apparently typically a driver issue, though it seems many of the individuals who have that problem were those who upgraded up to Windows 10 (this laptop comes stock with 10). Nevertheless, I called ASUS support and was led through a variety of steps to attempt to get it working again. We started in BIOS Utility Mode and reset the Bios settings; we did every scan known to mankind (memory diagnostic, registry scan, etc.); and then after none of that worked, we uninstalled the PTP Filter in Add or Remove Programs and attempted to manually reinstall various PTP Drivers from the ASUS support website. Well, things went even further downhill, as the installations would not work at all, no matter which version of the driver we tried. So the ASUS tech told me the only other option at that point was to do a full factory reset (just what I wanted after finally getting everything I needed onto a brand new laptop, right?), which he said basically HAD to fix the problem. Well, I did the full factory reset (even removed my files) and regrettably, somehow, someway the touchpad STILL did not work. The tech again led me through the steps of uninstalling the PTP Filter and attempting to manually reinstall various drivers, but once again the installations all failed. At that point, I was told the obvious - the laptop was defective. He recommended that I take it back to Best Buy so the Geek Squad could attempt to fix it, and if that didn't work they'd have to send it in to ASUS for diagnostics, attempted repair and if all else failed, replacement. Although the tech was helpful in attempting to resolve the issue with me, he was incredibly unsympathetic to my repeated pleas that I absolutely CANNOT be without a work laptop for any amount of time, much less an extended period. Every time I said that, he repeated "if you have any issues, you may feel free to call back and voice your concerns." He said it consistently enough that I'm sure it was scripted, but pretty lackluster service for a nearly $1,000 laptop. I brought the laptop back to Best Buy the next day, and rather than tell me I had to let the Geek Squad try to fix it (as I feared), the Assistant Manager was very understanding and once again gave me the option of trying another unit of the Q504UAK, or get any other laptop in the store at the lowest ever sale price. I'm extremely pleased with the service of my local Best Buy. Needless to say, after having had no luck with each version of the Q504, I was not about to take a third stab at it. I ended up upgrading to the Q534UX (7th Gen i7, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD + 2TB HDD, NVIDIA GTX950M graphics card, 4k screen), particularly because there are no reports of touchpad issues with that model. I suppose it also didn't hurt that I got it for the lowest ever sale price of $1,099 (which is just absurd for those specs). It's marketed as a gaming laptop (and is definitely much heavier), but it's clearly just a supercharged version of the Q504 (I don't ever play computer games). I am extremely pleased with the new model, especially the visibility of the backlit keys against the black aluminum frame of the laptop. In conclusion, my takeaway would be this: BEWARE. The Q504UAK is an excellent laptop, especially for the price. But my excitement was short lived and all positive aspects of the laptop were totally undermined by not only the touchpad error itself (you have to think it was probably just a defective unit), but also my whole experience with the Q504 line in general. I don't know that I'd call it a "gamble" to purchase the Q504UAK, but I was a solid 0-for-2. You may not have as compassionate/helpful of Best Buy in-store managers as I did, so just know that this problem lurks out there. In the end, you're not going to find a laptop with comparable specs for this ridiculous of a price (a similar spec Lenovo Yoga 910 is currently on SALE for $1,300), I personally do not like the feel or layout of the Dell I7579-7171, and not only have I not had good experiences with HPs but they don't even currently offer a 7th Gen i7 model with an SSD. If I were you, I'd wait until the Q534UX goes on sale for $1,100 again and pony up a relatively negligible amount of extra cash ($200) for an insane level of upgrade (not to mention peace of mind). Whatever you do, DO NOT pay more than $500 for a laptop that doesn't have a solid state drive. In fact, don't buy a laptop AT ALL that doesn't have an SSD. If you've never used a laptop that has a solid state drive, the difference is seriously well beyond what you could imagine (we're talking from shut off to the home screen in LITERALLY seconds). Hope this helps!

Beautiful but bad performance
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After two days using it and after a Microsoft update the Asus freezed its mouse pad. I asked help from Asus and then from Microsoft. I spent 10 hours making changes of drivers (with Microsoft supervision) but it was impossible to solve. I returned it

Solid Fast Starting Touch Screen Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. On the advice of a best buy computer salesman, I decided to go with Asus. I initially bought one with a 512gb SSD and 2Tb hard drive. Had to return it because audio didn't work. Best Buy said to get a new one but I decided to go with this model which better suits my needs. The first one was more for gamers. This one starts fast using the SSD and has plenty of data storage on the HD which is the D drive. I like the feel of the keyboard and wanted a 15 inch screen for the screen and the 10 key pad. I also like the silver cover of the machine. Its weight of 5 pounds is fine. Screen is clear, No bloatware.

A very nice machine with a few minor quibbles
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this machine in Emeryville, had to ask for it although now the website shows available rather than coming soon. Bought it based on specs, and for the most part it is exactly what I expected. A few minor things (and thus the four rather than five stars): 1. The fan runs pretty frequently and is a little noisy, even when using low computing power. I'm used to my notebooks being silent except when under heavy load. 2. The fingerprint reader won't unlock the system about 80% of the time. Don't know if this is hardware (Asus) or software (Microsoft) or both. Not something I really expected to use, but since it is there would sure like it to operate properly. Been through the identification process now three times, and it is still unreliable. 3. The keyboard backlight isn't very consistent. Even in nearly dark you can't really read the letters on the keys. In some places the top half of the letter is illuminated but not the bottom, in others the reverse. And a lot if light bleeds around the edges of the keys and is a little distracting. 4. The power cable is really cheesy and flimsy. I don't mind the brick itself, but the cable is light, tangles easily, and seems like a weak link. I travel with my laptop a lot, and cables tend to have an early demise, this one looks to be a goner sooner than others I've used. Overall I'm quite happy with the unit and would recommend it. All of the (minor) flaws are related to peripherals rather than the computing power of the notebook itself, which get five stars.
