    Good looks, bad connectivity

I bought this router because it looks cool and had decent reviews. What I forgot to check was lower rated reviews to see what kind of problems people are having. Setup was good and easy. I was able to set it up in a few mins and it was up and running in no time. Now previously I have used all kinds of routers (Cisco, Netgear, Asus etc). Never really had the problem that I am having with this router. It drops connection. Consistently. After a few days, 5 Ghz SSID, even though visible, doesn't allow me to connect to it. It is constantly looping between authenticating/connecting and then disconnecting. 2.4 Ghz has 2 Mbps speed (while my internet connection is 100/100). I tried to do what I saw in review and tried to change channels and reset the whole thing and reconfigured again but no good. Updated the router to latest firmware but it still drops connections. At this point I don't really know what to do other than to just simply take it back and get my money. I really wanted this to work as it is a really nice looking device. Too bad its all show but no go.

Looks and work great for mesh router setup

I purchased 2 of these routers instead of buying other brands of mesh routers, and I am very happy with the decision. I have one Blue Cave as the main router on the main floor and the second Blue Cave upstairs. The whole house is now covered, and it is fun to see at night that all our phones have automatically connected to the second router. You do have to download and install the latest firmware for the routers to have the AiMesh feature set. I would point out that you have to hardware reset both routers to get them to connect after updating (the Asus documentation only indicates resetting the remote node). Once the firmware has been updated, the setup is straightforward. In order to apply the firmware, initially setup the routers with dummy names as they will be reset afterward, but you need to enter basic setup to get into the web UI to apply the firmware. I would recommended this setup if you are looking for a mesh router option, and you want to be able to easily upgrade in the future as these routers can be added to with a new ASUS router in the future (even a different model) - not many other mesh products provide that level of flexibility. And they look great too - no longer hiding the router under the furniture

    Maybe I got a dud

Router worked great wired and on 5GHz with excellent range. However, 2.4GHz band was constantly losing internet access even though signal strength was fine. I likely got a defective unit but it's enough for me to return for a refund since I've lost faith in placing my hope that it will not die outside of the return period.

    Requires reboot every few days

This is a stylish router with good speed and good features. HOWEVER, every 3-4 days it freezes - loses connection first to wireless, then wired. Web UI unable to access when this happens. Only a hard reboot works. I have tried resetting to factory, I have messed with all kinds of settings. I have the latest firmware. I think it's a RAM leak because my log shows errors suggesting such. Also, the RAM steadily increases every day until it freezes - that shouldn't happen. I sent my logs in repeatedly using their feedback system, but never heard a response. Until ASUS fixes the firmware on this router, stay away. I wasted my money on this one.

    Loving it

I installed this router 3 days ago and so far so good. The router log shows very little activity. My last router had multiple disconnects and more activity on the log. My last router was the ASUS RT-ACRH17 but that one did not work out and owned it for three weeks, even when I troubleshooted it with ASUS support. I will update review if anything changes.

Don't Buy - Not typical Asus quality

I own several Asus computers and Asus routers. I am a loyal Asus customer; However, this Asus product is, in my opinion, NO GOOD. I spent between 8 and 9 hours messing with it and got no love. I own an Asus RT-AC5300 and an Asus RT-AC87 and both are superior. I work at home and spend 10 to 14 hours a day connected, I have 12 D-Link IP cameras connected on my network, televisions, iPad, computers, phones, and so on. I have a very good idea of what I am doing, like the MAC address and Ip address of each item, the band it is connected to the router or access point, etc. I will not make this a long boring review, I will simply say, don't buy it, I am returning this unit and will gladly spend $300 or $400 for a router that works... like my RT-AC5300, this is a toy at best.

Was hopeful but didn't work out

Set up was quick, but four hours later we never were able to get our Sony Bravia smart TV linked. A call was put into Asus, but they said we would have to call Sony. We bought this to replace a Netgear Nighthawk that died after less than 2 years so I didn't want another Netgear. We will be returning and choosing another product.

Looks Aesthetically pleasing, but not good

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this one to replace my older Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 that was a workhorse of a router. At any given moment, it would usually have about 20-25 devices hooked up (wifi or ethernet). Whether it be smart hubs or smart TV's, it was a trooper. I kept seeing good review for this router and decided to try it out since I liked the minimalist approach to the design.. Setup wise it was very straight forward...(name the SSID, password, etc.) after it did its firmware update though, it decided to go downhill. The GUI for the unit is nice looking, but not as easy to navigate since I was used to the Netgear GUI. Keep in mind, I do know a few things about routers since I work with them on a daily basis. I guess they want their users to do everything through a smartphone or tablet. The Internet connection was spotty at times and its only a 1400 sqft house. When I would run a speed test, it would get a burst of speed and slowly slow down. Anytime you would do a change to the router, it would take a few minutes for it to process the change, so that was a bit irritating. This router was supposed to be designed like a plug and play ready to go type router, but it seemed like this unit was a dud. It would have issues detecting my network switches that I have around the home or just plain drop them. My arlo Cameras kept disconnecting stating that the hub isn't connected to the internet. Same issue for my Wink 2 hub. I did find out the actual processor wasn't as powerful as the 4 year old Netgear AC1900s version. It only is a 800mhz processor. I honestly can't recommend this router at all, since I had a bit of a hard time using the GUI and overall, bad experience with wired/wireless connections. I didn't bother contacting the tech support line since they would have me do basic turn off and turn on and reset the router routine to see if that would fix it. Just would waste time. I will just be returning the router and getting another Nighthawk AC1900.

I've tried every set up option and firmware update through Dec 10 but this router is horrible. It works every time I turn it on but stops working after about 12 hours. Every morning all of my devices are offline and it needs to be rebooted. Best Buy return policy is only 2 weeks and there is the next problem since I bought it on Black Friday, 3 weeks ago so I'm probably stuck with this junk.

    Looks cool but sucks

I bought this router in February and it has caused problems since March. The one star is for the one month that it worked effectively. The connectivity sucks and after the first month it stopped showing the 5g Wifi option. Even when it is working it runs way too slow. In my initial review I gave it five stars, but that was before it turned to crap. I don't recommend this router to anyone. It might look cool, but it doesn't work.

    Just not reliable

I was excited at first for getting such a great deal on this router. It however turned into a nightmare of a 3 hour long setup trying to get all of my smart devices to work and fail miserably. I got most things to work eventually but then the router kept dropping wifi randomly. (Yes I updated the firmware). I can not recommend this due to the fact that my tried and trusted rt-n66u router is still working but I was looking for an upgrade to an AC router. I trusted Asus brand but this is a Dud! Sorry Asus.
