    Are they needed?,.. who knows... but these have worked great. Not sure if they truely need to replace normal HDMI cables however.

    As an entry level cable it is very pricy. The Monster Cable HDMI is compatible if not better.

    They pushed me to buy this in store and I did - the immediately returned it bc it isn't any better for 4k than a normal updated high speed HDMI cable
