The big news with this new Bissell vac is SurfaceSense. As the name implies, this feature gives the vacuum cleaner the ability to adjust automatically (well mostly) when you transition between bare floors and carpets. That basically means the motor speeds up and increases the brush rotation speed on carpet and vice versa on bare floors. I said "mostly" because this process is not entirely automatic. A switch on the handle allows the user to manually adjust the suction power between bare floors and low carpets, or plush carpets. You can also turn off SurfaceSense entirely, one of the options on the on/off swtich toggle. It's good to have options but one has to wonder why anyone would buy this vac for this feature and turn it off. Still, SurfaceSense Technology works well and is similar to the feature found on other brands. Otherwise, this is good a basic heavy-duty corded bagless vac. It is a bit heavier than some competing brands and suction is quite strong, so much so that pushing it across carpet can be quite a chore. Cleaning is an ease, however, on bare floors thanks in part to two soft rubber wheels in back that roll easy and keep the clatter down, even when moving across bumpy grout lines on tile or transitions between floor types. The main drive brush has a special tangle-free design, ideal for pet owners, and uses a combination of brushes and soft rubber flaps to ensure it picks up everything from pet hair to small particles like cat box litter. It is quite effective. All that stuff that comes off the floor ends up in a round clear canninster mounted on the handle. It releases with a single button push and empties from the botton with another latch release. Simple. Easy. There are an assortment of filters involved to keep the dust down, with the best news being all are removable and washable. No need to constantly buy expensive replacements. Like many competing vacs, the Bissell Smartsuface Pet comes with a variety of attachments, including a powered Pet Turboeraser which can be attached to the hose or extension to clean pet hair from furniture, cat trees, stairs and other small hard to reach places. There is also a dusting brush and crevice took, with a built in LED light. A line of LED lights also grace the front of the powerhead so you can see where your vac is going , even in dark rooms. Overall, the Bissell SurfaceSense Pet is a well-built, well-designed and versatile vac that should meet the needs of most homeowners. Also notable is a five-year warranty, which is unsual for any consumer product these days. My only gripes are that it is pretty noisy, lacks of an automatic cord rewind (why is this not standard on EVERY vac?) and is so heavy and powerful, running it over thick carpets requires a bit more effort than I would like.

Junk. I have to assume Bissell is not a true vacuum company. Stopped operating in under a year. Purchased to replace a Hoover that had operated for 7 years...and still works. Cheap Cord is inflexible. Is connected at bottom instead of at waist. Always disconnects from waist snap holder.

Too much work to clean up. Takes too long to pick up. The only thing I like about this vacuum is the light. I need to keep going over and over areas to actually have this expensive overpriced vacuum actually pick up. Only had this 2 weeks not pleased with its performance.

Underwhelmed. I was unhappy with this purchase. It was too much technology for me. I wanted a simple easy to use upright and it appeared to be just such a product from the images, but in reality it is clumsy to use and too many pieces that just didn't offer a simple cleaning solution. I guess I am just too old school, I needed simple and easy to use and I got bulky and difficutl instead.

I already own the Bissell Crosswave multi surface Wet/dry vac so I am aware of the great quality and customer service of the Bissell company. The Bissel Surface sense Pet Multi-Surface Vacuum continues to impress me. Opening the box you will find the on board tools which include the LED crevice tool, the brush tool and the powerbrush attachment. Once you remove these from the box you will find the the main the vacuum seperated into 2 pieces as well as the suction hose. There is a quick setup guide attached to the vacuum that should have you up and running in about 5-10 minutes. All 3 on board tools also have storage points on the vacuum itself. One thing that I love about this vacuum that may seem silly is the power switch is clearly visible and easy to turn on and off. It seems like many vacuum manufacturers like to conceal the power switch for aesthetic reasons that sometimes make the vacuum annoying to use. Right next to the power switch you will find a switch to turn off the autosense feature that automatically adjusts the brush roll based on the surface you are trying to clean. I recommend leaving this on auto because the surface sense technology is one of the main features of the vacuum that make it so great. The brush roll speed will automatically adjust in order to optimally clean the surface. The vacuum does a great job at picking up hair and fine particle. I compared the ability of this vacuum to pick up glitter after a arts and craft accident and it did a much better job at picking up the glitter than a vacuum mad specifically for hard floors. Also you have a thicker plush carpet you can adjust the suction accordingly via a slider switch on the handle. There is a quick release wand that detached easily so you can clean hard to reach areas with ease. I find this useful when trying to vacuum the dust from my vents or window treatments. The vacuum also contains the smart seal allergen system so the filters trap dust and dander from being released as you vacuum. The cord is plenty long at 30ft and canister is easy to empty via the single button one touch easy empty button. I am extremely satisfied with this vacuum and feel like to has made cleaning a little bit easier for me on a daily basis. I would recommend this vacuum to anyone.

Works very well on any surface. Love this new vacuum except for its weight. Would have rated it 5 Stars if it was lightweight.

A Great Vacuum with a Greater Cause

Bissell SurfaceSense Pet Vacuum is a powerful cleaning tool. Possibly the only one you will need to keep all of your floors spotless. It arrives almost fully assembled and is ready to use within minutes. It seamlessly transfers from carpeted to hard surfaces by managing the suctioning power and speed and of the brush roll. The brush has both hard and soft bristles that pick up even the finest dust/pet hair. There is a switch that allows this feature to be turned off allowing manual adjustment dependent on the floor type. The LED lighting on the front of the vacuum that allows you to see beneath furniture and in lowlighted areas is a true plus. So many vacuums do not have this useful feature. Some of my reclining furniture is pretty low to the ground and this vacuum doesn’t fit beneath it-but the extension wand does. There are several attachable cleaning tools included that allow you to reach high, low, and into crevices-this is the first lighted crevice tool that I’ve ever seen. This vacuum is a bit heavier than others I have owned (16lbs) but its’ weight contributes to it feeling very sturdy. I love that this is a bagless system, easy to empty, and that the filters on the unit are washable and don’t require expensive replacements. I wish that the 30-foot cord automatically retracted. I don’t know how many times I’ve had the cord holder be damaged on a vacuum causing awkward/messy storage. Easy to use and requiring minimal maintenance this vacuum is a keeper-especially if you have pet hair issues. Last but definitely not least, each purchase of this vacuum helps support the Bissell Pet Foundation in their mission to save homeless pets.

This is the first Bissell vacuum that I've ever owned, and so I was intrigued to see all that it could o. First off, I have to tip my hat to whoever the design engineer or design engineers were for this vacuum. They did a lot of things right in this category. All of the attachable accessories actually attach to the main unit. I always find there's always one or two stragglers. Speaking of attachments, I have to say that I found the crevice tool to be a nice pleasing attachment, and also a possible headache. The little led light allows you to see into small areas so you know that you actually succeeded in getting that rogue cheerio. I have to think though, how long will that bulb last, and how many batteries will I have used in the vacuum's life? I wish the attachment received it's power from the main unit. Typically I like to test vacuum's with my cheerio test. I placed cheerios on both my hardwood floors and my carpeted area. I used the auto bar function, and it was great at changing it's settings on the fly. In terms of power, it's no slouch. The suction is actually quite powerful. The vacuum is surprisingly light weight. For some reason I didn't think it would be light weight by its appearance. All in all I call it a great utility vac because of all of the nice attachments that it has, a powerful motor, and extra features that make it an all around great vac.

I have 2 dog and 2 cats so lots of hair. I got this vacuum because it was for pets. I usually end up pulling out my cordless vacuum to pick up the left over pet hair. I like the swivel head but I do not like that it can not lower enough to fit under things and I have to use the hose to reach under things.

This thing is heavy duty. I have two golden retrievers and it does a great job. It appears the tangle free brush is working great. Very powerful and I love the led lights on the front and even the one on the what I call the detail couch attachment. Easy to clean and they give you extra filters so you can use the other one while one is drying. I have a feeling this vacuum will be a 5 yr one. Very impressed.
