I have a high traffic home with half carpet, half tile. The Bissell surface sense multi surface vacuum seemed like the perfect fit for my home with all of the features it has, like the surface-sense technology, the multisurface brush roll, and pet clean tools. It also has a swivel head, which I love on vacuums. It has a medium sized head and coverage path. Assembly was very easy to figure out, you just need to remember to put the filter in under neath the collection bin. It is a febreeze scented filter. The smell is ok but might not smell great for everyone. The vacuum is light, but also feels like cheaper materials were used and sometimes feels like it could break easily, especially the wand. The slider mechanism to switch between bare floor and low carpet to high carpet feels loose and you can't feel any detents in your selection. It switches ok but just feels weak. The wand diameter is on the small end, which makes it light. The attachments fit welll onto the holders and include a rotating brush pet hair tool, a LED lighted crevis tool, and a standard dusting attachment. The crevis tool and duster attachments work good, but the pet hair tool I was not very impressed with. The brushes in it spin up real fast but when you put it down on the couch or carpet, the rollers stop and you have to force it to roll on what your cleaning. It was not the greatest at picking up the pet hair in our couch. Had to go over the area many times before it would pick it up. The surface sense technology can seem a bit slow to switch over when changing surfaces, so you have to wait a second for it to switch over. The roller in the carpet seems to pick up bigger objects ok, but it kept wanting to leave behind smaller objects and took several sweeps to finally pick it up. I feel this vacuum could benefit from being self propelled, but it's not. You also have the option to manually turn the brush roller off. I would rather some times being able to turn the brush on while in the tile, but that's not a huge deal. One thing I can say i'm not a fan of is the power button location. I would much rather have it on the wand. Overall it does a good job on the carpet, a great job on the bare floor, and ok with tough pet hair on the couch and stairs with the attachment. The swivel head helps it out. It is not too loud, and the febreeze filter puts out a nice smell but again might not smell great for everyone. Overall, it still gets the job done, but no vacuum is perfect. I feel the pet hair tools are always overhyped. I have some qualms with this vacuum but may just be personal issues with it and other may not feel the same. There is a lot of dirt in the container after vacuuming so it definitely picks up a lot, but gets frustrating when you have to take multiple passes to pick up visible debris, and yes the switch is on the right setting.

I had really high hopes for this vacuum based upon the many reviews I read but am quite disappointed with the suction on the edges. The headlamp is awesome but instead of working to the positive it showed just how much hair and dust was being left behind. I will be returning this vacuum.

    Decent Against the Competition

The BISSELL - SurfaceSense Pet Multi-Surface Vacuum is quite a decent vacuum. Right off the bat, it is easy to use and in some areas can outshine other vacuums I have used in the past from Dyson or Hoover. Even without the SurfaceSense technology, it is able to stand against others in its price range. The SurfaceSense technology in my opinion not really necessary. It supposedly adjusts the roller speed depending on the surface you are cleaning, but how does that even help with cleaning performance? If it's performant on carpet, do I really need to change that speed when going to hardwood? As far as I'm concerned, this does not contribute a whole lot outside of adding buzz words. Once you get past that, what remains is the vacuum. Fortunately, this in itself is pretty good. On carpet, it does a decent job. It's not as good as the Dyson, but for half the price it is definitely worth it. It is easy to push around, and the LED lights illuminate the floor usefully. One of my favorite features is how easy it is to detach the hose and instantly clean with it. Usually you'll have to detach the handle and awkwardly drag the vacuum around, but here it is optional. You can choose to remove the handle for that extra range, or just the hose by itself. You don't even need to unravel the power cord to detach the hose. It's easy to dump the dust, and the filter is easily accessible. They give you an extra filter, but that is the only extra accessory you'll get. Overall, this is a great vacuum even without the SurfaceSense technology. I would recommend this product to those looking for buy their first decent vacuum.

Hasn't been a full month and already filed a warranty claim. The bottom wheel cracked and marked the floor. It is not eligible for return through BestBuy, as their policy is apparently 2 weeks after purchase. The repair store is waiting on the warranty to be processed for them to receive the part. I contacted Bissell and did not receive a satisfactory solution. Save your time.

As a part of our family, we have 2 large dogs. A Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. Obviously, the Golden produces the most noticeable hair around the house. Our home flooring consists of carpet, hardwood and area rugs. With past vacuum cleaners, the biggest challenge was moving from hard flooring to carpet, and vice versa. The hair always seems to get stuck right at that transition point. What really sets this vacuum apart from the rest is the surface sense technology. In auto mode, it immediately senses the difference between the flooring types and adjusts itself accordingly. It works well. The feature seems a little confusing at first though. I initially expected this technology to turn off the rolling brush. As with other vacuums, you push a button to turn off the brush for hard flooring. However, with this vacuum, even though the brush keeps spinning on the hard floor, you can hear the difference. To give this a real test, I threw some cereal on the floor next to an area rug. I started the vacuum on the area rug, made a few passes, then moved it onto the hard floor to clean up the cereal. It sucked up the cereal perfectly. With other vacuums, where the brush keeps spinning on the hard floor, it would throw some of the cereal pieces around. Simply for this surface sense feature alone, this vacuum is worth it. The other positive thing I noticed about this vacuum is the tangle-free multi-surface brush roll. With all past vacuums, our Golden’s long hair would always get tangled up in the brush roll. I would have to pull out his hair from the roll every time I vacuumed. If I didn’t, the hair would build up to the point where I would have to cut it out with a knife. After using this vacuum, I checked the brush roll and was pleasantly surprised. There was minimal amount of hair on the brush roll. Most of it was in the canister. I definitely noticed a huge positive difference with this issue. Another nice feature is the pet turbo eraser tool. This tool really does have turbo booster power. Slap it on the wand and you really do have the power of a mini vacuum. With past vacuums, I always had to lift the vacuum up on our dog beds in order to give them a really good cleaning. With this tool, I don’t have to do that anymore. The only thing I wish this vacuum had was the ability to use the hose without the wand. Maybe I’m missing something, but I can’t seem to detach the handle from the wand, as I’ve been able to do with past vacuum cleaners. Then, you can just attach the tools to the handle which makes it a bit easier cleaning areas where reach isn’t needed. A small sacrifice for the other great features. Overall, I’m very happy with this vacuum and highly recommend it.

We go through vacuum cleaners, especially if they don't live up to the claims of durability and power needs of daily use in high traffic areas and pets. Lots of sq ft to keep clean in apartment buildings. This so far has not disappointed. We really love the power and the floor sensing feature in which it adjusts suction power and the carpet brush as needed. No problems at all handling winter high traffic entrances and hallways so far. Also of great use is the pull away wand with several attachments than come in handy when cleaning under furniture, in cracks and tight spaces. From a con standpoint, I always seem to find issues with the cord, cord attachment and just how cumbersome and in the way cords usually are. This one isn't the worst one I've seen or used but I also haven't found a vac with an ideal cord handling system. That being said it does seem to have a longer cord than some, so that's a plus for us with lots of long hallways to deal with. All in all I would definitely recommend this pros certainly outweigh minimal cons.

The vacuum packaging was compact and with just enough cardboard protection for the vaccine to arrive in perfect condition. The box contained the vacuum,a pad, hose, vacuum attachments x3, arm, small vacuum nose that can be used on furniture, brush, and a crevice tool. The vaccum is heavy and not compact. It has a place to put the attachments for quick access but is jus a bit to heavy. When vacuuming with it it does not easily guide it’s cumbersome it does require a bit of a push and pull die to the weight. I would not suggest it for an elderly person it’s like pushing a tank. It’s not any louder than any other vaccum just the expected noise volume. Suction is good and it does snd it’s easy to dump the picked up waste. The hose and placement allows you to have an extension to reach high places. The design is nice but just a let down on how heavy it is I wanted it to be light and nimble.

The Bissell with SurfaceSense is a great vacuum choice for those with pets and/or children. It checks a number of boxes that I was looking for in a vacuum. Assembly was simple. It took me maybe 5 minutes and the instructions illustrated what needed to snap together where and where to attach the tools. We have both carpets and hardwood through the house, as well as some area rugs. The SurfaceSense makes it easy to adjust the roller spin on carpet vs. hardwood. On hardwood, for example, you don't want the roller to spin quickly, as it would scatter debris across the room. On carpet, you want the roller brush spinning to pull out debris from the carpet and restore the pile of the carpet. From a suction standpoint, it's great. With the accompanying light, I could literally see the dust being sucked up in the vacuum. The attachments are the usual attachments, brush, crevice tool, etc. The crevice tool is narrower than my previous vacuum, making it easy to reach into the sofa to find dirt. I guess this can be a negative too, as the narrower tool won't be able to pick up larger pieces of debris, but I didn't notice any issues with what I needed to clean. Are there any drawbacks? The only I can reasonably point out is the cord. It's a bit stiff and gets in the way sometimes. I wish it had a retractable cord like my older unit had, but it's really a minor annoyance. All in all, it's a great vacuum for everyday use. It's relatively light, easy to maneuver, and easy enough to take up and down the stairs.

We have a big dog and a couple of cats, with both hardwood floors and area rugs and runners. But, the first test I had for the Bissell SurfaceSense Pet Multi-Surface Vacuum was human hair. I have been doing my husband’s haircuts for many years, and the day the new vacuum arrived it was time to cut his hair. We usually go outside for this, but this day it was too chilly – and I had a new vacuum! The cut hair fell on both the hardwood flooring and a runner rug, so it was a perfect test. The Bissell passed with flying colors. It adjusted to rug and hardwood instantly upon going onto each surface, and it pulled my husband’s fine little hairs out of the rug with a single pass. Here are some other observations: • This vacuum is not light, but it is maneuverable. • The cord is quite long, and I was able to go into a couple of adjacent rooms without having to move the plug to a different outlet. • In the past, I have had a hard time keeping up with vacuum attachments, but these fit easily and securely onto the vacuum without getting in the way. • The LED lighting at the front of the vacuum is very bright and well placed and angled for highlighting the path ahead of the vacuum and underneath furniture. • The vacuum is fairly large and so doesn’t fit into tight spaces, but that’s where the attachments come into play. I especially like that the crevice tool is lighted, so I can actually see into the crevice I need to clean. • Because I have had the Surface Sense vacuum for only a few days, I cannot comment on its durability. • I haven’t needed to empty the dust bin yet, but it is easy to remove. • I like that the filters can be cleaned. There is a second set of filters included, so one set can be in use while the other one is getting thoroughly dry.

I really wanted to love this vacuum. But it just fell short in a few areas for me. Things that I do like. I love that all of the attachments have a place on the vacuum so I don’t have to try and find one every time I want to use it. The lights are very nice and work well both on the main unit and the attachment. It pushes very easily on hard surfaces and Shag carpet. Maybe a little to easy on my shag carpet. It doesn’t pick up as much as my other vac here or on tile floors. When vacuuming bear foot I can feel dirt/debris hitting my feet. And the pet hair attachment stops every time it touches a surface.

Another Bissell to my cleaning army

Bissell has done it again. I have been thoroughly impressed with Bissel products, I have their Spinwave 2-1 robotic vac and wet mop unit, I purchased their portable, handheld pet eraser with the original intent of using it for cleaning my dirty car seats, then I became a dog-dad, and it has helped me so much more. When the SurfaceSense Pet Multi-Surface vac became available, I jumped on it. I’ve had two cordless (battery powered) stick vacs, and the batteries just don’t last as time goes. This unit is corded, and that doesn’t bother me, I prefer having a line of constant power, especially when sucking up pet hair from a fifty-pound German Shepherd puppy. The neat thing is, I have vinyl flooring throughout my apartment, except my bedroom which is carpeted, and it adjusts the roller speed accordingly and on the handle is a slider that adjusts the level of suction provided. The best thing I love about this unit is the LED “headlight” that shows you where dirt and hair is hiding, in plain sight on your floor! The unit itself is somewhat heavy, but I have one floor so I am not carrying this thing up and down stairs, in the handle is the hose attachment that slides out and you have three tools: a lighted crevice tool which is very useful in small, dark spaces for deep cleaning, and then the “pet eraser” (my favorite tool) helps with my couch, and uses the negative pressure generated by the vac to power the tool and it does work very well. Cleaning and emptying the canister is easy, two buttons: one to detach the canister and one to open the bottom of the canister to empty it out. Some of the filters are washable, others are not meant to be washed but that’s okay. If you have a pet, and they SHED, consider adding this life saver from Bissell to your cleaning arsenal!

This vacuum works really well. I own a German Shepherd and and she sheds a whole bunch. I haven't been more impressed with a vacuum than I am with this one right here. At 300.00 It competes with the top brands on the market. It pretty much comes fully assembled, just need to attach the wand and hose plus put the attachments in their spots on the unit. I sweep between carpet and hardwood and the Surface Sense does a good job as "sensing" what flooring its on. You can tell as soon as you are on something different that the roller speed changes. Had some coffee grounds spill on the kitchen floor and this vacuum made quick work of getting it cleaned up. Also larger items like leaves that get tracked in from outside are no issue for this vacuum. Even the napkins my other dog chewed up were sucked right up without a trace. Easy to push and maneuver around the house, under couches and chairs. This is made easy by the swivel head. It also has bright LEDs to light the way and allows you to see any debris that you may have missed. The debris bin is easily removed and the contents fall right into the trash with the push of a button. This also come with a washable and replaceable filter and an extra one comes in the box. I really like this vacuum and it serves me well.

I love this vacuum. I'm really impressed with how well it detects hard flooring and carpet. It will automatically shut off the roller when it detects hard surfaces. The suction works really well. The only things I'd change are the attachments. The brush attachment just isn't angled in a way that convenient for me. I wish it was a little more adjustable. Other than that, this is a great vacuum.
