Customers are saying

Customers praise the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for its exceptional image quality and beautiful bokeh, with many also highlighting its impressively fast focusing capabilities. However, some users find the lens to be heavy and expensive. The size of the lens is also a point of concern for a few customers.

    Must buy Lens

If you're a professional photographer buy yourself a nice lens like this one. This lens is amazing to own. Although the price is hefty, it's crystal sharp. Don't buy a third party lens because you'll regret it. I learned the hard way.

Noticeable improvement over previous 70-200mm 2.8

Firstly, I wish Best Buy would use the correct nomenclature; this is a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. I bought this to replace my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. This 2nd generation is sharper, especially at 2.8 and the AF seems even faster. I use it on my Canon 1DIV for sports, and on my Canon 5DII for indoor events. I am very pleased with the upgrade!

    Lives Up to the Hype!

I've owned the Canon 70-200 f/4L, the Canon 70-200 f/4L IS, and just upgraded to the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. All of the above lenses offer great value (despite the wide variance in price). I don't need f/2.8 for most of my shooting and thought the f/4L IS would suit my needs well. Apart from the aperture advantage of the f/2.8, there isn't much to optically distinguish the f/4L IS from the f/2.8 IS II. I did notice a very small amount of chromatic aberration on the f/4 that wasn't present on the f/2.8. However, it should be noted that this was only observed after resampling an image for a 40in x 60in print (and was easily corrected). I won't bother rehashing all of the superlative comments that have been made about this lens by professionals and enthusiastic amateurs alike (which is why I focused on comparing lenses within the lineup more than on specific characteristics of this lens). Many people can't discuss these lenses without mentioning the additional weight burden of the f/2.8L IS II (and how the f/4L IS is a better option for uses such as travel). As an avid traveler I followed this logic and bought the f/4L IS. The f/4L IS is a great lens, but I found myself buying the f/2.8L IS II less than 2 years later for the following reasons: (1) Knowing the f/2.8 was ever so slightly better than the f/4L IS with regard to optics. (2) Canon includes the tripod ring with the f/2.8L IS II. This accessory must be purchased separately with the f/4L IS. Sadly this is a very expensive accessory. (3) I was kicking around the idea of buying a 300mm f/4L IS lens. This zoom with a 1.4x III teleconverter will get me to approximately the same place for less money (perhaps with a slight loss in optical quality, but a gain in versatility). This is the best 70-200 class zoom lens ever put into production. Buy this lens if you can afford it and you won't be disappointed. I personally think that the "weight penalty" discussed with this lens is overstated in most reviews (I prefer handling my camera with the bigger and heavier f/2.8 mounted). If you can't afford this lens you'll be very pleased with the f/4L IS version.

    Fantastic Lens

IS is super quiet on this lens...easy to hand hold even though this is a heavy lens. Images are fantastic and super sharp. Glad I spent the extra $$ for this lens. I tried the older model and for $2K it wasn't as sharp as I thought it should be at that price. If you can get this lens with the fantastic 36 mth financing, DO IT!

It's heavy, use with harness or you will hate yourself. I mate this lens with a 5D mark 3 and call it my dream team for weddings.

    Huge leap over gen 1 70-200 2.8 IS L

I have been shooting with this lens for about a month now with my 5D mk II and this combo is a match made in heaven. Crisp sharpness and deep bokeh that outshines the gen 1 in every way. Faster focus is quite helpful for moving subjects like athletes and race cars. Highly recommended!

Well that being said I can say this is my go to lens it never fails me . Simply said it will replace alot of the primes you may have from the 135mm to 200mm. Awesome for portraits and all around use.The bokeh produced is almost 3D. Only the 85Lmk2 gets more use for portrait shots.

sharpest tele-zoom that you can get, period

sharpest 70-200 i've tried. the revised IS function allows me to get sharp images even at 1/50 (and my hands aren't the steadiest). if you only want the 2 best lenses for your canon dslr, this is #2 (1st is the 24-70). only complaint is that it's pretty heavy and the weight will wear you down when you're shooting for extended period of time. it's a small price to pay for what you get out of it though!

From all accounts this is probably one of the best advanced amatur/pro lens out there. Too bad best buy still does not have it in stock and like the other reviewer had post a long time ago, they do not even have it labeled right. You would think just that review would be enough for them to update this error, but nothing. Hopefully my flood of comments will help them figure this out. Hoping to purchase before the 0% deal goes away.

I have debated buying this lens multiple times before and after almost paying to rent it at an outrageous price for one week I decided to bite the bullet. I am so glad I did! I haven't used another lens in my bag since purchasing this one. Shipping was fast and service was excellent. Very happy!

I was cautious about this lens due to the price but after I shot my daughter's volleyball game and was able to posterize pics I was a believer. The gym was not well lit but this lens took in plenty of light to stop the action with no blur. Also I used it outside for football games and the colors are amazing. Easily the best lens I have ever used.
