When considering a color laser printer I was concerned with 3 things: 1) cost; 2) quality of color prints; and toner replacement costs. Best Buy was having a sale so that checked off #1. Reading reviews of this printer MF642, the output had good colors and throughput was fast. So that checked off #2. Finally, toner cost was comparable or less than other brands. One reason I almost didn’t buy this printer was the reviews that complained how long and difficult it was to set up. Once out of the well packaged box, I had the printer up and running on my wireless LAN in less than 10 minutes. The weight is hefty but tells me they used quality components and built solid.

This printer is beyond legit at under $500. I purchased mine in 2019 and it's going strong. The web interface reminds of professional printers.

Bought this printer in 2019. I wanted to be scan documents into a PDF and email. This function worked for about 6 months then stopped working. Searched online and via You Tube for the fix via the network settings for about several years. Cant get any support. This thing is so complicated and the UI interface sucks.

It's a printer, it prints and copies and scans like any other printer. But what this one does that's unique and fun... first it does not accept any paper that I have tried. Every single one requires multiple attempts to get it to load. The other part is the error codes... if you don't use it daily and leave it on, the next time you go to use it there's going to be an error code that requires a total reset of the machine. When it does work however... the prints are of a good quality in color or b&w, copies work great, it's fairly quiet for a laser machine (none of them truly are IMO). The amount of headache is just beyond the line of unacceptable for daily use, but when it does work it does produce very high quality prints for the price point.

Worked well but after two years it started smudge ink on pages and I am not able to correct it. Now getting another printer. Up to that point, it was working well

The color quality is excellent. I print photos, on plain paper, and love the results.

This prineter has been a headache since the start. It randomly changes its IP address and I have to reset all my devices, then it changes it back to what it was. Sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't. It's a mystery why, but I have to re-install drivers to make it work. It started leaking on the page after a while and still no clue as to why. The printer is bent on "protecting" itself but I use it only as a home printer and the arcane security measures are undecipherable and an impediment. I regret this purchase. It is the worst printer I've ever used. It stopped working suddenly and unexpectedly two weeks ago right before a big trip. Never again.

great features and fast printing, few things are not easy to configure like email configuration for scaning , wish to have better manual

Complete letdown. Totally failed for the purpose of the purchase after one month. I am a graphic designer and need good proofs for my company and clients. This gives a dusting of color with broad white streaks throughout. Don't bother buying a Canon printer for color printing.

this is not a review but rather a notice for you linux users. canon will not play nice with this machine in your CUPS drivers no matter what you try. lpd RAWRITE and web printing are a mess in linux. i tried google webservices printing and the page came out nearly white. on the other hand the cost of cartridges is by far the lowest of most machines out there right now. other brands are a true wallet killer reaching upwards of $150.00+ to the point where it would really be cheaper to just buy a new machine.

Love the printer. Easy to setup and perfect for home and workplace.

This is the worst printer known to man. I have had it 3 years and I cannot consistently keep it connected to my MAC. scanning image quality is blurry. print quality is all over the place. I have contact canon numerous times and it takes 60 mins just to talk to with a tech. Do yourself a favor, buy another brand. I am looking to replace it now (4/3/2023)

Awful printer, lots of color and printing issues!!

had to return didn't work will not buy again returned because couldn't' figure how to use it

We have to turn it off and turn it back on every time we want to print. Apparently the driver for this machine doesn't work with Windows 10. We've tried to download and install the driver 4 times and can't get it to work so we can't even scan. Huge waste of time and money. Giving this away and buying an HP printer.

keeps going into standby mode without the ability to disable it, computers constantly have trouble detecting printer...has to reinstall every time

I've been using this printer since January and was so excited for what I thought was going to be a really nice printer. Since March it has not worked properly. Since the beginning the only way I have been able to scan items is to a USB drive. Scanning to my email or computer is not possible. Only connects to my internet for about 12 hours and then it goes "offline" and I am unable to print until I factory reset it and start the process all over again. I have tried entering my Wifi information before shutting it down and resetting it and nothing works. The set up manual is also horrible. It gives very little help and will direct you to an online manual where I can't seem too find much either. I read about downloading the drivers, I have a MacBook Pro, and after I downloaded the drivers, they made no difference. I've watched youtube videos and read the manual and nothing I have done ever fixes the problem. This printer is so frustrating and honestly not worth the hassle. I would not recommend this product to anyone and since this is my first Canon purchase and I have had a HORRIBLE experience, I will not be a returning customer.

This printer was a hassle to set up and is a pain to use each time. I constantly have to reset the ports, troubleshoot the functionality, and even reset to restore network connection. I use it with two PCs and the experience is the same with each. It also resumes functions I don't like despite me setting it otherwise (e.g. printing two-sided, not remembering whether I scan from platen or feeder, etc.). This was a expensive mistake and I'm already on the hunt for a better unit.

I spent 8 hours of futility trying to set it up, and I am pretty good (usually) at this stuff-not sure if it was because of Apple product and recent Big Sur update-the software supplied is didn't work,- the directions supplied are worse, the screen and menu's are not remotely intuitive-if you worked as a Network Engineer and want to put in IP addresses all afternoon, switching mulitple cables, and lighting incense in the hope its going to connect, great, if not, find another one
