Product is excellent; beware Alarm.com integration

As can be seen via a nearby label, I was given a free unit in exchange for an unbiased review. If you have third-party services that give your security system some semblance of cloud-based control (such as Alarm.com), you'll want to read this review fully. First of all, the product itself -- which comes with a hub (gateway is built in) as well as a door sensor -- really is excellent. The only real issue that I found was that the setup instructions that came with the unit weren't as thorough as I would have preferred; I resorted to one of Chamberlain's own setup YouTube videos that was much more thorough in terms of steps. When the unit is set up, the hub contains an LED-based light that, when closing a garage door, will flash several times and beep for several seconds as a safety measure. After all, if you're closing the door from the app, then (rightfully so) nobody in physical proximity to the door is aware, and so the door doesn't close for about 7 - 10 seconds after you ask it to do so from the app. I think this is an excellent safety feature on Chamberlain's part. Opening the door is the exact opposite; my experience so far is that the door opens about 2 - 3 seconds after I ask it to do so over the app (and this was tested via both wifi and LTE). For overall execution and product design, it's excellent, once you understand how to get it set up (and, really, the reason why it's somewhat complicated to set up is because Chamberlain has had to account for recognizing many types of garage door openers, so that's fair). As far as security system integration, beware: since the product is in a subsequent generation, it might not be fully recognizable by services such as Alarm.com. In fact, I currently have a ticket open between my security company and Alarm.com to figure out why, after my provider enabled all available options for garage door/opener integration, Alarm.com still won't recognize the serial number of my hub (they require this number in order to proceed with security setup). In most situations, this might be due to the fact that you cannot enable the unit with both Chamberlain's app (where I currently have it to test/use) and Alarm.com simultaneously; should we get this issue resolved, I'll be removing it from Chamberlain so that it's freed up for Alarm.com's use. Regarding app usage, in both situations (Chamberlain app and Alarm.com), there are many options to choose in terms of alerts: length of time garage door was open, notifications for when the door opens/closes, geofencing, third-party automation service integration, and so on. And if you have two garage doors, no worries there -- you can get a second door sensor and it should pair with the hub without issue. If you're in the market for a wifi-enabled garage door opener, this is the one to get, in spite of third-party security-related issues (those challenges should get worked out in time). Besides, after enabling in Chamberlain's app, the same app can be used to disable it for other system usage, so either way, you're covered :)

The install was simple as pie. Initial setup was simple of the hub. The door sensor install was easy, used Velcro straps. Programming the garage door was a fail, but not MyQ's fault. I blame Genie and the MyQ documentation. The online documents said all Genie were compatible. This was wrong. I have a Genie 2028 that was manufactured in 2016. After mounting everything and going thru the opener configuration, it did not work to open the door. To the internet Robin! After a quick Google search, I found forum posts saying anything made by Genie 2016 or later would not work. Years 1993-2015 should be safe. I contacted customer support to verify. This is a true statement. Right now I have a fancy garage door monitor that lets me know when the door is open and how long. Before purchasing I would recommend contacting MyQ customer support to verify your opener is compatible. The reason, Genie changed their communications so it will only work with their branded WiFi opener. This would be great, my opener is the issue. But the documentation made me Mark this a 2 star.

This hub was easy and fun to install it only took me 30 mins from start to finish to install and get the hub up and running. Didn't have any issues activating with Android device. The only thing missing if we can see which device open/close the door. for example my phone @ 3:15 open door, wife phone open/closed at x time. I do like the alerts for every action. App is simple and secure to use.

I read some.of the reviews and have come to conclusion I would have zero issues with a Chamberlain door opener. I was right, it works flawlessly and it is nice to check the status of my doors at all time. Installation was painless, 2 screws and a plug, done. Next, register it with the opener and done. And last, setup the app, done. All was less than 10 minutes and I love it. I don't see an issue with any other door opener as it has a sensor you can use that knows if it is open or closed. I highly recommend this setup, so nice to use your phone when. You are in a different vehicle.

I realize it's not Alexa capable no matter how hard people try. Also, the bridge they're promoting for Siri compatibility is more expensive than the myQ and, according to reviews, seems to be pretty much useless. Granted, those are significant deficits. If not for this, I would give it 5 stars. But, for its intended purpose, the device has worked flawlessly (2 weeks in). It was ridiculously simple to install, connected immediately to my wireless network which is not terribly close, and has not missed a beat whether in network or out and about. The app has just enough features to be useful. So far, I'm quite satisfied. I just hope Chamberlain comes to its senses and provides some sort of hack, add-on, software, or firmware trick to work with Alexa. It's truly a massive fail on their part.

One of the worries I have on a daily basis is whether I left my garage door open after I have already driven away from the house and will be gone for an extended period of time. Even after returning to check or close the door, I always wished there were a way to easily check again from a afar. With this myQ garage hub, life just got a little less worrisome. *****Before doing any installing, please make sure that the garage has a strong enough Wi-Fi signal. This is essential to getting the system to work properly. If your Wi-Fi signal is not strong enough consider moving your router to better cover the garage or consider installing a Wi-Fi extender close to or inside the garage itself.***** It took me more than an hour to install and test everything as I wanted to mount the hub and sensor as perfectly as possible. Upon finishing the physical set up, I downloaded the mobile app. A monthly subscription fee is required for Google Home linkage but this does not apply for using the myQ app only. You can get alerts/notifications when the garage door is ever opened or closed which is great, especially when you are leaving town and not returning to the house for an extended time. Overall the garage door monitoring system works as intended and I personally have had no issues using it. The mobile app is quite easy to use and you gotta love the alerts when the door is being used. These subscription fees for Google Home integration do not affect me but they were unexpected. I gather that is how the company can make some more revenue to offset the costs since this system is new. Hopefully after enough successful sales the subscription fees will be dropped.

So, let me say first the MyQ Smart Garage Hub works as advertised. I'm an IT professional and I had a hard time with the directions, which I think could be made a little clearer. Granted, my garage door opener is a vintage 1997 model, so that could have been part of the problem. Once I got it figured out, the device works flawlessly. It's nice to know if I've left he door open or if someone else is opening it.

Worst Smart home product I've used

There's not much to recommend from this product. The overall experience and advertising of this product definitely puts this smart garage opener at the bottom of my list. The MyQ markets itself as a smart hub but other than garage doors and a plug in switch. If you're looking for a smart home hub, there are far better options for the same price or lower that also offer much more functionality. Set up: in short, it was hard, confusing, and not well organized. You start the set up through the app and then are redirected to the internet, then there's a long confusing process to connect the hub to your phone through the wifi settings and input a serial number. I'm a person that is pretty good at figuring out technology and I had a hard time seeing this up. Almost no thought was put into the set up of this product and someone not as familiar with technology would have a very difficult time. The app: it's ok, not much functionality other than opening and closing the door, setting alerts, and schedules which seem pretty useless for closing a garage door. Comparability: this was the part that truly not recommend this product. The hub is marketed as compatible with wink, Xfinity home, Google Assistant, and IFTT, which would really make it pretty useful. There's one catch. To use Google Assistant or IFTT you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. The fee is not a lot but, for a product that costs $100, there is no reason integration with these two services should have a fee associated. The marketing in this pushing the integration but, then sneaks the subscription wording in at the end. It's misleading and poor marketing. If you want something to link your garage door to your smart home or want to be able to open your garage from your phone, there are much better options for the same or cheaper price.

I love transforming our old 70s home into a up-to-date SMART HOME! This unit was the next step. It is absolutely fantastic - I appreciate knowing when my garage door is open or closed by just checking an app on my phone. I will say, setup was INCREDIBLY easy as well. For an average user, I would estimate 30-45 minutes. Very easy and well worth it! Highly recommend this unit to anyone wanting an easier way to control your garage door :)

I got this to connect to my second garage door opener since it works well just didn't have the features I have on my Chamberlain WiFi opener. Right out the gate i have a complaint about the setup instructions. They do NOT include all the steps needed to get up and running which was very frustrating! So to save you some time here are the items that are missing. Follow the instructions and when it says to plug in the device do so, then go to your mobile device and select the device from your list of wifi networks. Once connected, open a web browser and use the setup.myqdevice and add the .com at the end and it will walk you through the rest. This part may have been missing for me since I already had another MyQ device setup. Once this is done you go back to the app and add your current opener it will operate and you are off to the races. Once I got past the frustration of missing instruction it was all good. It does work just like my integrated Chamberlain door opener.

I was able to install this device in about 30 minutes. The instructions were not the best, and probably can improve, but they were good enough that I was able to figure it out. The device was able to learn my garage door opener quickly. I like the convenience of being able to open the door from my phone. Being able to do this from anywhere is convenient and it's great to be able to check on the status of the garage to see if I left it open or closed. Overall, it seems to be pretty convenient.

This unit installed with my Liftmaster very quickly and easily and now gives me the open / close information I was looking for. It does run on your WiFi, so it's best to have a dedicated IoT network due to questionable security from IoT vendors, but it works well and the app gives me the ability to check if it's open or closed and to actuate the door as well. It also keeps track of how long the last action was, so you can tell if the door has been closed for 7 hours, or open for 15 hours. I have yet to integrate it with my Nest system, but it will be interesting to see how integrated I can make the systems work with my door lock, etc.

This smart hub is a nice, relatively inexpensive addition to any smart home. It is easy to install and has just enough features to make it worth the investment. Pros: Peace of mind - I personally like the peace of mind to be able to check the status of my door no matter where I am. On the same line, I enjoy the ability to schedule a time in which the garage door closes. I choose to have one set up for night time and one shortly after I leave work. Easy of install/ setup - This hub is a snap to set up and install. It also has a relatively wide radius at which it will connect with the opener which is great for those with multiple doors. Cons: The only negative for me is the alarm it gives off when it closes. I understand its purpose, but is certainly on the edge of obnoxious. All in all this is a GREAT option for those who are looking to retrofit their garage door opener into a "smart" opener.

It certainly has/was never reliable. When it did work, it worked intermittently. I never could 100% depend on it, so that limited the resources available to use in conjuntion with such as Amazon Key Delivery Service (they leave package in your garage by connecting to MyQ Garage Door Opener). About roughly a year in, it just quit working all together. Everything powered on and on the surface looked like it was functioning properly; however, it was impossible to get both components of the MyQ Garage Opener and my iPhone's MyQ app to sync. I factory reset device, changed batteries, deleted and redownloaded app, and nothing worked. It would get to the last step on the app's configuration process and give me the message that it could not connect and to start the entire process over.

My goal was to be able to open/close my garage door while away from home, using an iPhone. My garage door opener is a LiftMaster 1240LM, manufactured in 1994. I did my Internet research and learned that the answer for me would be to add Chamberlain "MyQ" capabilities to my old LiftMaster garage door opener. Chamberlain offers a lot of products for doing this, but it turned out that the MyQ Smart Garage Hub (LM821) was the answer for me. It comes with two main components: The "Hub" which mounts on the garage ceiling adjacent to the motor box; and a "Sensor" that mounts on the inside of the door itself. The Installation instructions were simple. Following those instructions: not so much. I got the Hub installed on my home WiFi but ran into a brick wall trying to install the Device. Now I have installed many home automation devices in my home, but this one had me stumped. eMail support from Chamberlain was good (overlooking the fact that the first rep misadvised me on which Hub to order). Finally, when I hit the brick wall during installation, I phoned Chamberlain Tech Support. Got a great rep. In five minutes he walked me through the remaining steps. So it works and I am one happy camper.

Was excited to install the Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage Hub as I have wanted to automate my garage door; specifically to be notified if my garage door was left open. Initially, everything worked as expected. The garage door opened and closed with the app and the status (open and closed) reported correctly. However, that quickly ended on the second day. I opened the garage door using the push button on the wall. Then opened the app expecting it to reflect that the door was opened. It did not; it still reported the door as closed. I force closed and reopened the app and still it reported incorrectly. After several more attempts including opening and closing the garage, the app would not report the status properly. At that moment, I lost all faith in the app being accurate on the status of my garage door. I can't trust it to let me know if the door it open or closed. I will use the app if I am in the yard working and need to open or close the garage door easily, but I wouldn't bet my family and home's security on the app/product.

It took me about an hour and 10 minutes to set up the MyQ Smart Garage Hub but it could take less for many people since set up is actually easy. It does what it promises, that is, you can open/close your garage from anywhere your smartphone has access to the internet. If that is the only purpose you have for this, then it mostly does a good job. By mostly, I mean that I've experienced some false status updates such as open when the garage door was actually closed and vice versa. It happened only a couple of times but it concerns me a little although it could be just that I needed to position the sensor better.. Unfortunately the MyQ Smart Garage Hub only supports smarthome systems such as Apple HomeKit if you buy an add-on bridge which is costly. I wish they charged more upfront but included the whole package since this is obviously a smart home device. To make things worse, I also use Google Home and to use it with this system, you need to pay a subscription fee. This is not a bad system but there are too many hidden costs if you want to take full advantage of its capabilities. For that reason, I would either wait until the manufacturer offers a full package even if it costs more upfront or I would go with another option.

This is an okay item but not something I consider a great item for a few different reasons. First, the app isn't very good. Second, there is the subscription fee, which I think should not be necessary. And third, my garage ceiling is so high that getting up to the ceiling to attach it is kind of a nightmare. Not impossible but a bit of a nightmare when it comes to attaching it to the ceiling. The instructions also are not very detailed, which I found slightly annoying. But overall, it seems to work like it should. However, I probably won't use it a lot just because the app doesn't really do enough to make it worth it for me.
