When I first received the RAD450 I thought it was great because it wasn't going off at every store in town and only went off at Wal-Mart if you were right in front of the door. Then when I saw a cop in the median, it didn't go off until I was about 40 yards from him. No time to slow down. There was plenty of traffic ahead that he was checking. To make sure I called a buddy of mine that is a police officer. He set up about a half mile away and on a straight road with no obstruction and had his radar on the whole time. Again, never picked him up until I was right on him. Had the settings on high also. Not sure if this one was defective or not but it was returned. I've had better detectors at 40 dollars.

(Synopsis) Go ahead spend an additional $400 or more for a Radar Detector. You will still get false alarms. Even the GPS equipped units false at door openers and intrusion alarms, until the location is flagged. What good is that feature on a route you haven’t traveled before? This RAD 450 reliably provides all the warning and information you need at far less cost. It gives clear alerts at a distance great enough to avoid problems. I may not be consciously speeding but just in case I want to know where they are so I can go even slower (read on to longer version if you’re interested in why). (Long Version)This is a very well designed and great performing Radar Detector. My last detectors were a famous and expensive brand. One quit working after few years and the other, a battery operated unit began to give way too many false alarms both radar and laser, even when passing cell towers. The beauty of the RAD 450 is that while not totally immune to false alarms (and neither are the $600 plus competitor units) the way it handles and displays alerts makes all the difference. I have been driving with a Radar Detector for decades. No, I don’t use it to purposely speed. Yes I do use it to learn where speed traps are set up. Way back in the ‘70s I received a ticket from what was obviously a crooked speed trap. Unless Radar can see through a field of trees and a long Cadillac Limo they had no real idea of the speed of the New ’73 VW Squareback Demo that was a perk from my job. I came upon the limo stopped in the middle of the road and the cops just pulled me over too. Having dealer plates I did not have a registration so I got a ticket for that too. I pleaded guilty to the no registration and not guilty to the speeding by mail. I then received a notice that the registration summons was dropped but I had to pay a fine for speeding. I went to court and the judge said I couldn’t win and to pay the fine which would be more if I contested it. So goes the local Revenue Enhancement Program. I began watching for possible traps and a few years later I bought a Fuzzbuster which looked like a small toaster sitting on the dash of another Demo, this time a nice New ’78 Chevy Nova 2DR V8. To test it I drove an abrupt 55 to 30 mph speed trap area at night. The X band (the only one used then) went off as I approached the speed zone. Meanwhile I noticed headlights bearing down fast so I pulled over and let him fly by. Sure enough down and up a hill and around a curve about a mile from where the Fuzzbuster went off the guy was pulled over. Lesson for today, never drive without your Cobra and get it at Best Buy for best price and service.

Do not buy this if you're looking for something that really works. I got a ticket while using it within a month. I was not allowed to return it to Beat Buy because it was over 15 days.

I'm rating this low due to the fact it doesn't work for all radars/lasers. Also it picks up store alarms and traffic lights which gets annoying after awhile.

It doesn’t pick up laser bands even though it says it does. I got one changed out from the manufacturer and the new one still doesn’t pick up laser.

Not impressed with this detector. It rarely alerted of radar ahead of time, only going off when I was nearly on top of the car running radar.

Had it on for 2 days and i decided to return this unit, it gave me tons of false alert (which i expected after reading the comments). BUT I DROVE BY 4 DIFFERENT COPS WHO WAS SPEED CHECKING AND THIS THING DID NOT EVEN BEEP ONCE!!!!, 4 different cops at 4 different places, day and night, with different mounting locations. I don't know how it worked out with other, but in my case, total disappointment.
