A super solid desktop replacement gaming machine!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Dell G5 5590 is Dell’s midrange gaming powerhouse. Yes this is the same company that brings you Alienware, but don’t confuse their G-line as a b-line. Essentially the Dell G-line is for those who want to avoid the heavier gamer aesthetic associated with the Alienware line. The G5 exemplifies this with it’s understated matte black finish, understanded logos, and blue keyboard backlight. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no mistaking this laptop for anything other than a gaming laptop, but only due to its size and weight. Of course the G5 features more mainstream parts than you’ll find in the more exotic gaming laptops. The G5 features an i7 9750h 6-core CPU, GeForce GTX 1660ti 6GB, 16GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, 1TB HDD, and a 1080p IPS display. Honestly this loadout creates a nicely balanced machine that won’t break the bank. The Dell G5 comes in rather basic packaging. It includes a 180w power brick and the laptop and that’s it. The build quality however is top notch. There may be thinner gaming laptops out there, but almost all sacrifice structural rigidity compared to the G5. Overall the chunkiness for this laptop feels right. It weighs a tad above 6 pounds, and is less than an inch thick, which is comparable to the first gen unibody MacBook pro. As far as performance goes, the Dell G5 doesn’t disappoint, but does need a bit of help getting there. Specifically, while Dell doesn’t overload with junk or draconian security software, the SmartByte application was immediately a problem. Not only did it limit WiFi throughput to 30Mbps (imagine downloading a 20GB steam game at 3.5MB/sec) but consumed a decent amount of CPU doing it. The fix was simply to uninstall the application. After that I was able to get the Intel 9560 to peak around 500Mbps (62.5MB/sec) download, which is much more respectable. CPU wise, the 9750h is only a minor revision compared to its predecessor the 8750h, which I am pretty familiar with. As with any of the 6 core CPUs, performance can vary significantly based on how cool the CPU itself is kept. The Dell G5’s 3-heatpipe cooling system does an excellent job of dissipating heat generated by this power hungry processor. In fact, the CPU peaks around 87w TDP which is desktop level heat. I found in Cinebench R20, that the CPU would boost up to it’s all core 4.0GHz clocks for a brief period of time before power limit throttling back to 3.2GHz or so. Installing Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (really a must if only for monitoring) allowed me to raise the power limit and boost time period to max. After this, the CPU would thermal throttle around 95C back to 3.6GHz. In search of peak performance, I undervolted by -0.115v. This resulted in the CPU boosting to it’s all core 4.0GHz and it stabilized around 85C which is well within the normal safe zone for this CPU. Any normal gaming workload won’t stress the CPU quick as hard as Cinebench, but it’s great to see this workstation level of performance. Cinebench R20 got to 3019 points, which is truly desktop level performance (beating a previous generation 12 core Xeon). The undervolting pays off in games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which went from being GPU bound only 82% of the time to 93% of the time (i.e. the CPU isn’t the limiting factor 93% of the time). The GPU is a Turing based 1660ti, which hovers quite close to its desktop brethren’s stock performance. I was able to achieve over 14k in Firestrike which in and of itself eclipses my 2015 desktop rig that sported 2 GTX 970’s in SLI. The GPU’s speed is comparable to the previous GTX 1070 and even its bigger 2060 but in a much lower powered package, which doesn’t require the same sophisticated cooling. It’s missing the Turing RTX feature set, but for traditional rasterization performance, it’s a great value. It sports 6GB’s of GDDR6 which should be more than adequate for 1080p gaming, which is the card’s bread and butter. That isn’t to say you couldn’t game at 4k using the convenient HDMI 2.0 output or Mini DisplayPort found in the middle rear. In fact in esport titles, and older games, this is probably easy for this card to achieve. There definitely is a bit of headroom in both the GPU’s clock and memory clock. I was able to push the core to +150 and memory to +300 without breaking a sweat. Normally overclocking a laptop seems odd, but again, this is a well-cooled gaming laptop, and extracting the maximum performance for this desktop replacement formfactor is a noble goal in my opinion. I do want to emphasize the desktop replacement nature here however. One odd behavior of this laptop is that on battery, the CPU and GPU are clamped down quite tight. The TDP of the CPU appears to be limited to 11w. That’s about 1/8th of its peak power limit, and requires that the clocks max out at under 2Ghz. Notebookcheck concurs with these observations, and this makes the laptop on battery about as slow as an ultralight Core-M laptop. Even if you max out the sliders for performance, flip all the dell options to performance, the CPU won’t go over 1.8GHz, and the GPU is stuck at its power-sipping 300MHz frequency (normal boost goes to nearly 2GHz). I’m not certain the motivation here, unless it’s literally a battery drain limit, but essentially on battery this laptop can be slow and laggy in anything other than basic web browsing and office tasks. I suppose one benefit to this behavior is that battery life is excellent. I am getting close to 8 hours of runtime at 30% brightness, which is great as long as you understand the limitations imposed by Dell on this otherwise powerful laptop. Obviously to get these numbers I’m not utilizing the 1660ti (even at its reduced clocks), but rather the integrated Intel graphics which is used automatically to reduce power consumption. Another indication of this being a great desktop replacement computer is it’s port layout. The power, MiniDP, HDMI, and a single super speed USB-A port are found in the rear. This is a great layout for hiding external monitors, USB hubs, and of course the 180W power cable. While it does have a Thunderbolt 3 port, it's found on the left side and is a 4 lane PCIe supporting external GPUs, but lacking any power delivery (a Dell pop-up comes up and displays that power delivery is not supported and to use your included power adapter). Obviously USB-C maxes out at 100w, but it would have been nice to have it be an option to provide power over this port. Also on the left side is a another USB-A SS port, and a combo headphone/mic jack (AHJ). On the right side, you’ll find another USB-A SS and a full-sized SD card slot. The card slot is ponderously limited to USB 2.0 speeds, maxing out at a disappointing 24MB/s read from my Samsung Evo (which can manage well over 80MB/s). Storage is a bit of a letdown for me on this laptop. You get a PCIe 256GB SSD from Hynix, which unfortunately is a pretty basic NVMe 1.2 model (2x PCIe), limiting its performance to only slightly above SATA SSDs. The included drive is a 2242 m.2 drive, but the laptop does support 2280 SSDs (much more common) if you decide to upgrade it later. There is also a half height 2.5” SATA drive that is 1TB. This is probably sufficient, although I would probably look at replacing the 2.5” SSD with a SSD model assuming prices on SSDs continue their downward trend. Overall storage is adequate, but nothing special on this laptop. The screen on the Dell is an AUO23ED, which is a 1080p 60Hz IPS panel. The screen is bright, but definitely an indoor only usage. It’s an adequate pairing with the 1660ti, allowing it to max out AAA titles in both resolution and refresh rate. I did try to overclock the panel slightly, but was only able to reach 65Hz before the display was unstable. To mention a few other odds and ends: the 720p camera is a really basic model, offering poor contrast in bad lighting, so it’s really only useful in direct light. Don’t expect this to be a good ‘streaming’ camera, as it seemed fuzzy to me even in good light. The trackpad included however is excellent and supports the full complement of Windows 10 gestures natively. While the material isn’t premium glass, it still feels nice to use. The keyboard is a slim travel chiclet style keyboard with blue backlighting. It sports a small triangle on the ‘S’ key to help you find the WASD quad whose keys are set off with a blue border. The keyboard includes a number pad for better or worse, but luckily the trackpad is centered on home-row. The power button is centered on the inside with a bright white LED indicating power, which tends to be slightly distracting. Overall the G5’s BestBuy configuration is a solid setup. You get a solid 6 core CPU, extremely strong GPU with plenty of VRAM, 16GB of RAM, and an adequate storage setup. Best of all, the RAM, SSD, and HDD are all upgradeable with off the shelf components down the road. While compromises exist, Dell didn’t skimp in important areas. The ponderous power limiting on battery limits its usefulness away from the wall outlet, but it’s easy to overlook this given how tweakable the platform was plugged in. The G5 is a strong value, bringing understated aesthetics, solid performance, and great upgradability in a relatively compact and sleek chassis.

Nice laptop
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The computer is great. I'm a little disappointed that the rep didn't mention anti-virus protection and I have to bring it back in because I need some windows key. Idk, but it would've been nice to not have to come back because everything wasn't accounted for. I've since found my own anti-virus but I still have to come back for the windows key. I'm pretty busy so it kinda conflicts with my schedule. Bitt, that's life, I guess! Otherwise, I like this computer a lot!

Spectacular Performance, But Loud
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had hoped for this gaming laptop to pack some serious power, and it came with exactly what I wanted. I tested its capabilities by running both older and newer games, including two resource-heavy games—FINAL FANTASY XV and The Witcher 3. The Dell G5 15 is equipped with the necessary components to be high-end. The i7-9750H at 2.6 GHz is there for raw power, a 256GB SSD for fast loading times, 16GB of RAM (no gaming laptop should have any less than this), a 1TB hard drive for more storage, plus the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with 6GB of VRAM. Now this isn't going to let you run a resource-heavy game and stream at the same time. Luckily for myself, I don't stream, so I'm able to get as much performance out of it as possible for the games themselves. I was happy to be able to run FINAL FANTASY XV and The Witcher 3 at max settings at 60 FPS (or higher with some lessened settings). There were some dips at moments, usually down to 55, but it never went below 45, which was no problem for me. I did have to turn off some in-game NVIDIA settings to help achieve this, but they weren't crucial, in my opinion. This was due to not having enough memory. Older games, or those that don't demand quite as much RAM, run absolutely fine—I can run FINAL FANTASY XIV Online at a constant 60 FPS at max settings. Unless you're running whisper mode at 40 frames per second or less, this thing is going to get loud. Very loud. I'm able to tune out the sound of the jets better when wearing earbuds or a headset. Unfortunately that's just what you have to deal with when playing on a laptop where the components are discrete. It also gets really hot. The major components are located near the back, so you'll only have to worry about burning your fingers if you're holding them on the function and number keys, really. You will need to keep the laptop plugged in, or you're going to get extremely bad results. It insists on having the battery plugged in for optimal performance. You could possibly tweak some BIOS settings, but it'll be better to keep it plugged in if you're running games on this laptop, or you won't get to play for long without needing to recharge it. The only thing that would make this just a little bit better is if the built-in display had a higher refresh rate. A 60Hz refresh rate is standard, and the games I've played look pretty running at 60 frames per second. But there are some newer games that, if the settings are tweaked just right, you'd be able to get an even smoother display with great graphics if the screen had a higher refresh rate. Still, there is the ability to output to an external display to get what you want, so this isn't a major issue. I've been absolutely pleased with the G5 15. I prefer a laptop over a desktop these days since it saves on space, and I can take it wherever I want. I can't say why you should pick this over another with similar specifications. This just happens to be a solid package that has fulfilled my own needs as a gamer.
