Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the G5 15.6" Gaming Laptop's performance, graphics capabilities, and fast startup times thanks to its SSD. Many appreciate its ease of use and sufficient memory and storage for their needs. However, some customers find the laptop heavy and note that it can get warm and have noticeable fan noise during use. The battery life is considered adequate by most users.

So, I thought I was buying a "higher end" PC. But, proof is in the testing. I use Passmark to test pc's. This exact cpu went through the battery of testing from Passmark and got a score of 3702 which is in the 56% percentile of ALL PC's tested. Comparable PC's in this class got a rating of 7700. BOO HOO! Oh well it is OK for what I use. Set-up was extremely easy.

This laptop does what it appears to set out to do: be a mid-range gaming laptop. As one might expect, it's a heavy beast of a machine with a power brick to match. The discreet 1660 graphics, matched with a 1080p screen, means it can handle most games effortlessly. While not the most advanced of gamers, I was able to play my usual lot of FPS games at high settings, and this laptop handled them with ease. But let me start off with what I didn't like... Wireless networking: I could not get this to work out of the box. One would think it would be set and ready, but this wasn't the case for me. It took me a few days to realize that the bloatware was the culprit. I had to uninstall some applications and 3rd party network stuff before the wifi finally worked. Windows 10 not activated: I have never seen this one before with a new laptop. Maybe mine was just a fluke. Luckily it was quickly resolved without any drama. I'm not a fan of the trackpad. Tapping seems fine, but I like to press down - and the trackpad didn't seem as responsive to this as I would have liked. The keyboard: The keys are a tad small, scrunched and stiff. This is probably a preference thing. But I also kept missing the Backspace and Enter keys when I wasn't looking down on the keyboard. No Thunderbolt 3. This was expected from the specs, but it's a shame it wasn't added here (the higher models have it). The USB-C port that comes with this laptop works fine, but not having Thunderbolt 3 means no eGPU use. For me that was a bummer. With the negatives out of the way, here is what I really liked about this laptop: Ports on the back. This is simple, but I love it. I get so tired of seeing plugs coming out the side of laptops. Speed. Yes, this is actually a pretty fast laptop. I believe the GTX 1660 performs slightly better than a GTX 1070, and it shows. Although not advertised as such, I was able to play VR games with this laptop and it performed well. Separate drives. The 1TB HD and 256SSD is not a hybrid drive, but two separate drives. In typical Dell fashion (which I LOVE them for) you can access the components and even swap them out to upgrade, although this requires some simple disassembly of the back cover, etc. Not recommended to do if you're not comfortable with it. Ports. This laptop has all the ports you need (minus the Thunderbolt 3 I mentioned earlier). I was also happy to see the inclusion of a mini DisplayPort The sound. I was very pleased with the audio coming out of this unit. It has some kick to it. So all in all, it's not a laptop that will wow anyone, but it does get the job done; and what it's meant to do, it does it very well. However I had to take a star off because of the initial problems I faced - particularly with the wifi. That was very disappointing, but in fairness, it may have just been with my machine (lucky me). This does show the downside of bloatware.

      Keirmeister,

We're glad that you managed to get the wireless and Windows 10 working on your new computer. If you'd like to re-calibrate your touchpad you can follow these steps:

Some Notebooks and Tablets with Keyboards have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate and swiping. These new features may be the reason for the erratic cursor movement since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way the features work in the touchpad driver properties. Here are some tips to modify these settings:

      1. In the Search box, type main.cpl.
      2. Touch or click main.cpl in the list of programs.
      3. Touch or click the Dell Touchpad tab.
      4. Touch or click on the picture of the touchpad.
      5. Touch or click Gestures (depending on your computer there may not be a Gestures option).
      6. Change the options as preferred.
      7. Touch or click Save.
      8. Touch or click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Dell Touchpad Utility.
      9. Touch or click OK on the Mouse Properties window.
      10. If the touchpad still does not work after following the preceding steps, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article - http://dell.to/2iaiujA.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tqmS02.

We hope this helps your touchpad and your computer perform better for you.

      Best,
      Bryan

The computer performs well with a couple of things I don't like. The left palm rest area for mouse is overly sensitive to the mouse pad. Shouldn't have any movement just by resting hand on side of mousepad. Another is that the graphics is not as crisp as my alienware which is 6 yrs old when playing games.
