Customers are saying

Customers regard the G7 17.3" gaming laptop favorably for its performance, large screen size, and impressive graphics capabilities, with many also praising the high refresh rate and RGB keyboard. However, significant concerns exist regarding overheating and loud fan noise, while some users also mentioned the limited SSD storage and the laptop's considerable weight. The build quality received mixed reviews, with some finding it solid while others did not. Despite some negative feedback, the price point was generally considered reasonable.

Awful Laptop unless you can work on computers

This laptop is absolutely horrendous for gaming. It boasts these amazing parts in it, but none of it is optimized for gaming at all. Even with the assistance of the "high performance fan" button included with it for "advanced cooling" and a laptop cooling pad for a laptop with these dimensions( I've tried 3 different brands now and none have kept it from overheating even on the lowest graphics settings and both v sync settings) nothing keeps the frames from dropping down into the single digits. Sure, you can maintain 60 FPS, for all of 30 minutes. The laptop has an INSANE overheating issue. The people reviewing this must just be playing something like minecraft or some other horrendous low poly game because you can NOT play any bigger name games such as Call of Duty, Apex, New World, or World of Warcraft for more than 30 minutes without your laptop sounding like its going to absolutely explode and simultaneously emitting the heat of a thousand suns. This is by the absolute worst gaming laptop I have ever owned, and Dell should be ashamed for keeping this on the market place as any warranty you purchase will not allow you to get a replacement model or a return for it. The only viable option you have for this hunk of garbage is to go on youtube and have a guru laptop wizard walk you through step by step processes on how to turn everything off thats supposed to make this "run seamlessly" and replace the thermal paste in it which then voids the warranty for any malfunctioned parts because you opened it and they didn't.

      Hello,

Thank you for taking a moment to share your review. We are sorry to hear that you're experiencing thermal issues with your G7 and we would love to help right away. Here are some tips that can help prevent overheating from happening.

Here are the recommended steps for troubleshooting overheating:
      1. Ensure that you're running the latest BIOS. An out-of-date BIOS can cause thermal's issues. You can download the update here - https://dell.to/2WNIVRw.

      2. Prioritize cooling by opening the Alienware Command Center application and select the 'Cool' thermal profile.

We recommend following the steps above to resolve your overheating issue. If the issue continues, please contact our support team here: https://bit.ly/DellSupportTeam.

      Best regards,
      Wendy C.

This portable veast handles everything i throw at it, from music production to gaming, with no problem. Console emulators run well, too. The only complaint i have is the lack of USB ports (comes with 3 standard ports and 1 USB-C) but that was easily resolved with a USB hub. Be aware it gets warm. Highly advisable to get a cooling pad with fans.

Has worked nicely so far. Boots up really fast and handles the multiple applications I run with ease. Price point was a bit high as I didn't need the gaming/video card aspect, just the other features/functions.

Upgraded from a three year old Alienware R4 17 which has been holding up quite well. Read reviews on BB as well as Reddit. A lot of folks talked about yes, heating issues. Ran all required updates and sat down to see how well the notebook PC performed. First issue, couldn't find any information as to whether or not face sign-in worked. The system said it couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face. Restarted Windows Biometrics and a bunch of other settings. Nope, didn't work. Then contacted Dell Support, to which the Support person kept to the script - have you tried reinstalling the OS. Terminated the call once I began to slip down the rabbit hole - never did figure out whether or not the system in compatible, Camera worked though. Next issue = RBG lights on the front. Several of the whatever wouldn't light up. No matter what I did. Moved onto running benchmarks. My go-to is userbenchmark. For whatever reason, UB was unable to locate the GPU - yes, changed settings within Nvidia Control Panel and well as made sure antivirus software was blocking or stopping. Eventually gave up. Then tried to play COD WWII and Far Cry 5. Both sputtered and stuttered every 3 to 5 minutes. I noticed there was a memory bottleneck. Changed settings to within Alienware Command Center - Power and Thermal. No change in game play. Needless to say or type. the notebook will be boxed up and returned. Actually, will swap the SSD for an M2 and see whether or not the HD could be the culprit - yes, this is a stretch. I do not need to be clairvoyant to know the notebook PC will be returned for a refund.
