Always had a Dell

I've been one who's always had a Dell and Windows OS. I love this computer! It's quick and the graphics are great. The touch screen is accurate. I LOVE the light up key board. I go to school online so it's helpful when I'm laying in bed working on something and don't want o have the lights on.
My only problems with it are:
1) There's no CD drive. And that's probably my fault I didn't pay better attention to that detail in the reviews and details of it.
2) If you've never used Windows 8 before, it can be a little difficult to navigate through the start screen. I've had it a week and just figured out how to move things and add to the start menu.
3) If you already have Microsoft Office and want to download it on here, you have to do the 64 bit and it's a little hard to find at first. But once it's uploaded and going, it's just as nice to work with.
I would for sure recommend this computer.

great hardware for 2015+ linux distros

I ran Windows 8.1 long enough to update the BIOS and make a recovery USB key. Then rebooted and installed the RC for Ubuntu 15.04 along side Windows. Windows still works, but in my opinion the current crop of Linux distros are superior to 8.1, so that's where I've been spending my time...
In Ubuntu all the hardware is recognized and everything just works. No need to install any proprietary drivers. I didn't even need to change any BIOS settings prior to install.
Pros:
1920x1080 IPS display has nice color reproduction and viewing angles (thumbs up from a photography hobbyist)
The 802.11ac gives real-world speeds of 200+Mbps (thumbs up from a networking professional)
Light weight design makes it comfortable on my lap for hours at a time (thumbs up from a couch potato)
It feels sturdy and well built (thumbs up from a car junkie & gun enthusiast)
Well rounded design. Except for the one con listed below, it seems they didn't cut any corners in the design (thumbs up from a perfectionist)
Cons:
There is no LED indicator for HDD activity.
There is no 10 key pad.
Other thoughts:
This laptop is the first in its price & size range that has a good display, while being light enough to comfortably sit on my lap for hours on-end.

Solid Mid Range Laptop with a few flaws

I had a dell inspiron laptop that was 8 years old. Still kicking, but showing it's age. When it came time to purchasing a laptop, I wanted something to compliment my desktop (used for lots of photo and video editing) but not at a high price point. I didn't go with the i7 processor, so the i5 is slow when first booting up apps like itunes, lightroom, heck even the browser. I think this is because of the mechanical drive. A solid state drive would make this work. Again, I am not using this a primary computer, but mostly mobile office when needed. I have run Revit on it (wouldn't recommend it for everyday use) and other graphic intense programs with only minor hiccups.
Laptop is nice and lightweight.
Touch screen is nice.
Bootup time is FAST!
Battery life is great!
Some cons:
Processor/ Hard drive can be lag at times.
The HDMI port is very close to the usb 3.0 and HDMI ports on the left side of the device. Two usb 2.0 slots and an SD slot are on the right side. Waiting for micro sd to be included one day instead of using a reader or adapter.
I wish there were more than one USB 3.0 ports, but it is what it is.
Keyboard is very comfortable to type on, with the backlit keys a bonus.
Device had to be replaced first 24 hrs I purchased it because half the keys didn't light up or work.
Compared to a Lenovo Y50/70 my family has, this is not close as the Lenovo is in a different class and price point.
For everyday use this is a solid and reliable machine which is very lightweight and worth every penny.

Was happy with my purchase and was so disappointed when I realized it did not come with a disk drive, I thought all laptops came standard with disk drives, have to get another one now that has a built in disk drive

I got this one only to watch movies and very regular things like writing an article for school. After 10 moths, the screen died. They got it replaced for me. I did not have it for 3 weeks, since it was sent to Tennessee I guess. Six months later. it happened again. I was told the minimum cost would be 180$. So, I decided to get a new laptop instead.
It was a horrible experience. I do not recommend it to anyone.

I've always owned a Dell because of their product durability and this unit is no exception. The 5th Gen Core i5 provides quick, smooth performance. The aluminum body is quite sturdy and very easy on the eyes. To the others having performance problems I would recommend making sure ALL Windows updates are installed as well as ALL Dell drivers from their updates page. My only complaint is I wish the keyboard had a little bit more key travel, but it's no biggy.

Great Computer

This computer was a gift to me as a late graduation present and I absolutely love it. I'm switching off of a Win7 computer, which I was a little hesitant to do because I'm not fond of Win8. To be honest, it was an easy switch that I'm happy I made. My old computer was not nearly as capable as this one. Everything is fast and definitely worth your money -- especially if you can catch it when it goes on sale. If PC gaming is what you're after in a laptop, so far I've had a lot of good luck with it. The 6GB RAM is definitely worth it. A few people have been writing reviews saying it's bad because it didn't work. Well, I believe that to be an isolated problem to that specific computer. Possibly a factory issue. Best Buy is very much happy to work with you if you experience problems like that. I haven't had an issue despite only owning this a day. I'd recommend this product to anyone.

Good All Around Laptop

This is a very nice all purpose laptop. It's I5 CPU and Intel 5500 graphics processor are fast enough for most tasks. It is initially slowed down by the 5400rpm hard drive but once it's up and running, that's less of an issue. The biggest advantage is it's excellent screen. Dell's Truelife panel is bright, vivid and sharp. It's the best that I've seen among the current selection of 15.6" laptops. The fact that it's an IPS screen makes it very viewable at most angles, a major plus when the unit is literally sitting on your lap.

Overall it is a nice laptop. I use it to watch Youtube and use Visual Studio. Boot times are good. Do not expect to play AAA games. It does run older games and emulators (Only tried Dolphin Emu so far) run full speed.
PROS:
+Very nice screen
+Touchscreen is great to use!
+Backlit keyboard
+Quiet
+Good battery life
+AC wireless compatible and Bluetooth
+Aluminum cover
CONS:
-Fingerprints on screen are noticeable in areas with high lighting.
-No Ethernet
-Windows scaling can be sub-par in some applications. Easy to turn off though.

It's a trackpad away from greatness.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Why,oh why, can P.C. makers still not make a decent trackpad? This is a nice computer. It's well equipped, stylish, and has a sturdy feel to it. The screen is great , it's full HD and it's sharp and bright. The keyboard is fine, and it's backlit. The included hard drive is large, but slow. I replaced it with an SSD and this computer is now very, very responsive. Windows loads in about three seconds. My only real complaint with this computer is the trackpad. It's bloody awful. The moment you take your fingers off it to click, it goes scooting across the screen. The trackpad is frustrating. I almost returned the computer because of it. Best Buy often has this computer on sale for $100 or more off. If you buy it on sale, it's the best deal around for a 5th generation I5 with a full HD screen, backlit keyboard,Wireless AC, and a skinny metal body.

Does not have a number pad next to the keyboard.

The laptop itself is very nice. It's quite thin and has good processing power.
I do feel slightly deceived though. I opened it up and found there was no number keypad next to the keyboard. The pictures on the web are very careful to not show you the keyboard. All the other dell laptops show you a nice picture of the keyboard that shows the number pad included. Seems like they intentionally left it out of this one.
