Touchpad Flaw
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this computer for my son for his birthday and the touch pad on the upper, right hand side was coming a part. I pushed down on that section to seat it but it would start coming apart again. I took that one back and exchanged it for another one and same thing again. Seems like a design or manufacturing flaw.

Thanks for your review. We're sorry tha this laptop did not work out the way that you wanted it to. Here are some tips for keeping your laptop running at a cooler temperature in the future:
Tips for Proper Usage:
1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

Impressive performance
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this laptop to see if it would handle developing a game using the Unreal engine. So far I have tried multiple Intel i5 and i7 mobile CPU's ranging from 5th generation to the latest 8th generation, and only the laptops with 8th generation i7 with the nVidia 1050 GPU have been able to run the Unreal development environment in anything better than medium graphics settings. The AMD Ryzen 5 with the Radeon Vega 8 struggles just a little with medium settings on demo game from Epic, but that game was featured at GDC 2 years ago running on dual nVidia Titans. The fact that this laptop will even get 5 frames/second on medium settings is amazing because every other laptop I tried failed except for the 8th generation i7. Basically, this laptop is performing in a very demanding graphics load at least as well an i7 laptop that costs twice as much. It gets 5 stars for that. It isn't a beast gaming computer, but it also doesn't chew through its battery in 1.5 hours. I've gotten 4 hours of very intensive graphics development and 6-8 hours of browsing and watching shows on Netflix. It gets 5 stars for that too. My major complaint is the weight. At nearly 4 pounds, it is not light in the hands. It is a bit awkward to pick up, and opening it definitely requires 2 hands. I have an iPad Pro 12.9 inch tablet, and this is nowhere close to being as easy to hold as a similar sized tablet. There are some i7 laptops which weigh about 1 pound less, and that pound makes a big difference. It gets 3 stars for weight just because it is deceptively heavy for its size. This laptop will easily handle business tasks, and it would make a good computer for a college engineering student or an art student who needs to run Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. It does handle demanding graphics programming, but I did not load any games to test frame rates. My prediction is that it would handle higher settings than the Intel on-chip GPU, but it will not perform as well as a computer with a dedicated GPU and DDR5 memory. It is a very responsive laptop with a lot of nice features. I am seriously considering keeping it instead of buying an i7 laptop with more power because I think I can get about 75-80% of the performance for less than half the cost.

Junk...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, I originally bought this model just with the Ryzen 7 on April 30, 2018. I ended up returning that on May 3rd because of constant freezing. On the same date (May 3rd) the store associate recommended this one (the Ryzen 5) because it had solid reviews (at the time at least). Well, I have had it up till today (May16th) and I am very disappointed. The WiFi constantly disconnects for no apparent reason. I will be surfing, and BOOM! Disconnects. Troubleshoot, and it fixes it...But, it doesn't stop it from happening again. My main issue with this computer is the constant gray screen I get. I will be randomly surfing and then I get a freeze with a grayish/black screen. Everything locks up. I close the lid, wait about a minute, then open it back up, and everything is fine. This usually happens 2-3 times a day for the last three days. I have contacted Dell Support, which does the same troubleshooting I do, and they are absolutely NO HELP! I can no longer return this laptop, so I am stuck with it, unfortunately. I am so angry and so upset. I am a graduate student working on a degree. I am not made of money. What money I have goes to survival. I thought I would be getting a solid laptop to get me through school but this one is just terrible. It's fast. Boots up quickly. But, that is where it ends with the pros. The constant freezing and wifi disconnecting have made me beyond angry and bitter. So, just be warned...DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP!

We're sorry to hear about the troubles that you've been having with your new Dell computer. We're glad to hear that you've already reached out to Dell Support to help you. You should check to make sure that your software and drivers are up to date on your computer and see if this helps with your WIFI connection. Here is the page for your computer's drivers and software - https://dell.to/2KvXWfQ.
If you'd like to diagnose why your computer is freezing on you we'd suggest that you follow these steps:
1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
a) Start the computer.
b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete steps 6 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
6. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your computer is not meeting all of your needs. If you'd like to extend the life of your computer's battery, you can try these tips:
Change the Power Plan:
1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.

You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.
a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.

Excellent, with a few issues
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I hope this review can be of assistance to other purchasers, as I found - and corrected - a glaring flaw. First, to the good points of the laptop. Small enough to be easily portable. Build quality seems excellent. I don't notice any flex, and keyboard feels good with no deflection I can tell. Backlit keyboard has 2 level lighting. The SSD is quite fast, and has 256GB - enough for many programs / apps, games etc. RAM is adequate - but I still intend to upgrade to 16 GB as I will rum moderate games. So far, processor seems to be handling multiple tasks well. Since it is a 13 inch screen, 4K is not necessary, as the screen is quite sharp at 1080 resolution. Cannot attest to battery life at this point. There was one big issue - the reason foe 4 stars - and possibly this can be of help others. When opening and initial start up of the computer, the display and colors were good. White backgrounds were reasonably white. After a massive Windows update, the white areas of screen turned an ugly shade of tan. Even with "night mode" turned off, and utilizing the color settings, could not get white areas of the display near white. However I stumbled upon a solution by going into device manager and updating drivers for display adapter. Now display looks more or less as it did upon initial boot up. You may still need to balance color under "calibrate color". But now, whites are nearly white, greys are grey, which is important to get fairly accurate colors. Overall, so far, I am quite pleased with this laptop. I will, however, amend if necessary....

Initial OS lock ups, BIOS/System Updates needed
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I convinced my fiancee to buy this laptop over the more expensive Intel version because I like the new AMD lineup of zen CPU's and the internal graphics are better than the iGPU's Intel includes. however upon getting the laptop we experience intermittent OS lock ups, not crashes or full system lock ups, OS freezes where the mouse moves but nothing is responsive to clicks. These seemed to happen when doing "intensive" disk operations, i.e. downloading and installing chrome while updating windows and trying to grab other drivers/programs like MS Office suite. However this was solved by starting from the most vital updates, BIOS, then going to Windows & Radeon graphics updates. Then and only then moving on to the installing of other programs like MS Office suite and Google chrome. Fingers crossed the system has been stable for a few days. CPU/GPU temps are acceptable. its a thin laptop so only so much thermal headroom. fans are a bit loud when at full blast but this is not constant by any means. During normal operation the fan are near silent and peachy keen. overall she seem to enjoy it, we saved some cash money and after the updates system works well, again fingers crossed that it keeps working well

Works fairly well with Linux
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was interested in getting a current notebook to replace aging ones that was not "tainted" by Intel's ongoing Spectre type exposures that seem to just keep mutating into new forms with no apparent interest/ability on Intel's part for cleaning house. I installed the Linux Mint 19 distro in a dual boot configuration to retain Windows 10 ("just in case"), although I did have a bit of trouble at first getting Mint (Ubuntu 18.04-based) to play nice with the Ryzen 5/Radeon, but finally found 2 boot options that seem to have done the trick (if anyone needs to know, on the grub.cfg "linux" line add: iommu=soft noapic ). So, no, not a "plug-n-play" option for those who are not inclined to Linux geeking, but worth the effort if you are ;-} . All the main features work, such as wifi, touch screen, sound, camera, but only some of the power management, but not standby/wake. I tried OpenSUSE 15 first, but it did not set up mulitboot for the Windows installation, and I was not familiar enough with it to figure out how to implement that. Solus has a lot of hype about all the AMD support it has, but the installation did not have that activated, so I bailed out of that, too. Mint "just works" in that regard, so I went back to what I was familiar with. Dislikes: Glossy screen; Touch pad is too big, and like 99.99% of other notebooks, is right under the space bar where my thumbs keep making the cursor jump to random places while I type, which drives me nuts. Ideal keyboard for me would have Trackpoint (such as my Thinkpad Tablet 2 bluetooth keyboard, which has more "native" keys such as Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, etc, and all the keys are bigger, due to not wasting space on a touch pad, nor the wrist rest spaces on either side), and/or touch pad on the right where a mouse would usually be.
