    The dreaded BSOD

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was excited to try out this laptop and see what AMD can bring to the table but unfortunately I ended up returning it. The dreaded BSOD kept rearing it's ugly head a few times a day during web browsing and streaming video. A cursory Google search seems to indicate an issue with the AMD display drivers. I tried reinstalling the display drivers, resetting windows, etc etc but nothing seemed to help. I wasn't planning on waiting out my return period and exchanged this for the Lenovo Yoga 730 which seems like a much nicer laptop in every respect except for build quality. Pros: - Build quality is great and the hinges feel like they will last a while - Generous selection of ports including a full sized SD card reader - Ability to upgrade both SSD and RAM (with 2 RAM slots for dual channel memory) - Nice display (if a little on a dim side) Neutral: - Windows hello is good if useless in tent mode - Speakers are decent but don't get very loud Cons (apart from the BSOD): - Laptop tends to run warmer than I was expecting with the fans kicking in often even during minimal load - Battery life is below average with about 4-5 hours or normal use - They keyboard is just not very good with very shallow key travel and minimal tactile feel - Trackpad - I don't like the texture of the surface or the feel of the buttons - No windows ink support (if you care about that) - Quite heavy for a 13 inch and not suitable for using as a "tablet" My suggestion would be to go for the i5 version of the Inspiron 7000 series or look for other options like the Yoga 730. I just don't think this laptop is worth it at the moment.

    Decent solid state drive laptop

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Really had high hopes for this solid state drive laptop. Really liked the features (light weight, beautiful screen, starts up quick). However almost every day it would shut down for unknown reasons and it loaded back with the blue screen indicating "Windows couldn't load correctly". Also experience major issues for web browsing and viewing videos (YouTube, Netflix etc..) on the web. Very slow response time and buffering issues with videos. (My Wi-Fi router is only 10 ft away). Also had issues with the USB connection for my wireless laser mouse...it would disconnect periodically. After a week I exchanged this laptop for different Dell model laptop (Dell Inspiron 13 7373). Very happy with the new Dell laptop.

      Lizard,

We're sorry to hear that your computer stopped working for you. We'd recommend the following tips to keep your computer from overheating:Tips for Proper Usage:

      1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
      2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
      3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
      4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
      5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
      6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

If you need help starting your computer up again you can try these tips: 1. If the computer is displaying the Dell logo and does not move past that point, it has probably failed POST.
      2. If the power indicator lights up and it is amber or orange, this is usually an indicator that it has failed POST.
      3. If you see text on a black screen, the computer is currently performing the POST. If the computer stays in that condition and does not move past it, it has probably failed POST.
      4. If the video screen displayed anything at all during the startup process but is now black, this probably indicates that the computer failed POST.
      5. If the computer is beeping or if Caps/Num/Scroll Locks are flashing, note if there is a particular pattern in which it beeps or flashes.
      6. If the computer is not beeping and caps/num/scroll locks are not flashing, unplug all connections and remove all media communication devices (e.g. external monitors); reconnect one at a time and check if the computer functions.
      7. For a notebook, press and hold the Fn key and then press the power button. This starts the pre-boot testing and will launch ePSA. In case you have a Desktop at the Dell logo screen tap the F12 key to enter One Time Boot Menu and use the arrow keys to highlight Diagnostics and press enter.

    Buyers Remorse

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is my first, and likely last, Dell laptop purchase. I've worked with Dell desktops and laptops for work and thought highly of them due to the usually smooth running capabilities they provided. I bought this laptop in order to pursue my Master's while I'm deployed overseas for work, thinking that it would be able to handle the basic use of Microsoft Office, Google Chrome and some occasional light gaming. I could not have been proven more wrong as dealing with this little gray laptop have proven to be nothing more than a headache through and through. Between the daily blue screens, sluggish behavior and inability to run anything more demanding than Solitaire it's really become nothing more than a piece of clutter on my desk. Drivers are up to date, despite the computer's best efforts, and there is still no reprieve. I wish I had bought this earlier so I could have taken this back to Best Buy, but I'm now unfortunately stuck with this. The laptop is pleasant to look at though, its only redeeming feature it seems.

      Mbdet,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your computer is getting hot when you run it and that it's loud. Here are some tips to help your computer cool down:

      Tips for Proper Usage:

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2uJ8AdG.

If your computer is continuing to make noise we'd recommend the following:

      A: Cleaning the Vents

      1. Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through.
      2. Turn off the system.
      3. Remove all power sources: Unplug the AC adapter and remove the battery, or unplug the desktop power Cord.
      4. Use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the vents. Be sure to hold the can at an upright angle (near 90 degrees), and hold it 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) away from the vent.

B: Update the BIOS: An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2ENlXfz.

Lastly, if you are still getting Blue Screen Errors you can diagnose the cause here so that you can try to fix the errors:

      1. At the desktop, click the Search the web and Windows box and type "problem reports".
      2. Select View all problem reports to view a list of errors that have occurred on your computer and possible solutions for them, such as updating drivers, flashing your system BIOS, or checking for updates to the software.

      4. Right-click the line item and select Check for a solution.

We hope these tips help your computer perform the way you intended it to.

Bought laptop 5 months ago. Within first week, constantly gave blue screen error. Had it replaced by BestBuy within return period (2 weeks). Second laptop, after 4 months, charging broke down. Whenever plugged, charger was not recognized, didn't charge and computer slowed down to being unusable. Was told by BestBuy to call Dell support. Dell support is the worst I have seen from a company its size. Discussion took 1.5 hours, staff spoke very little English, it was very difficult to understand. They had me mail the laptop to them for fixing, entire process took 15 days (15 days without laptop). Laptop was returned with the same issue, and constantly slow to the point of being unusable. The laptop is now entirely unusable. Buyer beware. Purchase exclusively with $200+ insurance.

    Frequent BSOD/locking up

      Jyoung,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry that your daughter's computer is frequently locking up. Here are some ways to troubleshoot the lock-ups that the computer is experiencing:

      1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA.
      2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below:
      a) Start the computer.
      b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.)
      c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter.
      d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access.
      e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete step 3 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing.
      3. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. To check for malware on your system and to ensure that your computer is up to date on security software, visit Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2wWP1zI.
