Best Purchase in a long time

All I can say is that the Dell XPS has meet all the expectations ive had for it. Its speed is great, boot up time is all of 5 seconds and the battery life is so much better than my old laptop. I got this ultrabook for college 2 weeks ago. I thought I was in for a hard time trying to get used to windows 8, but I was comfortable with it the day after I got it. I was between a Mac book and this and im so glad I choose this. Im very good with computers but not the best. I wanted to be able to do more on a computer than a Mac allows you to do. The first thing I put on this computer was a N64 emulator and a Gameboy emulator and they both work flawlessly. Ive been playing Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart in 1080p the past 2 weeks and im lovin it. The ability to sync playlist over to your xbox with windows 8 is great and how I can check xbox messages and friends online all through my XPS is so convenient. Ya the windows app store is still developing, but all the apps ive downloaded have great layouts and work fine. iTunes was a bit of a pain because I had to put all my songs onto a flashdrive and then put them on here, but that didn't take very long and that was probably the most annoying thing. Most of my friends have been talking about getting mac books, but after seeing this XPS they are starting to change their minds. This by far the best laptop/ultrabook ive ever purchased and ive had no regrets.

Got this for my daughter in college. Had trouble connecting to the internet, it would connect intermittently. Typing on one screen then it jumps to another. The down arrow key fell off. After a week we took it back and got a different brand. Not a fan of Dell. Will never purchase another Dell.

I got this laptop as a graduation present as I really wanted a laptop that I could use at design school, as well as travel with and let me say that I am absolutely in love with this laptop! Perhaps it is because this is the first laptop I got to choose, but also it is definitely quality. I will admit the price is quite high, but worth it if you plan on using this laptop often. It's super light (especially compared to my previous laptop which is the Dell Inspiron N5040# and starts up very quick #literally 5 seconds tops#. Tablet mode is very convenient especially when I just want to sketch out some designs and stuff. I will admit to some cons however: First, no disc drive so I can't upload cd's and watch dvd's and such. Secondly, the trackpad was not at all sensitive enough, but I fixed that in the settings. con is that there isn't a SD card reader, so I had to buy a USB converter Overall, beautiful laptop that works really great! Again it's super light #to me since my previous laptop was 6 pounds# especially for traveling and stuff, battery length is decently long #I believe I got 5.5 hours out of a full charge on power saver#, screen resolution is very clear, bright #both on tablet and laptop mode# and is a perfect size. Also, I love windows 8! I don't understand why people don't like it, it's not that hard and I got the hang of it within my first use #the video tutorial loaded on the laptop did help :)

I've only had the XPS 12 for a weekend and so far, I'm impressed. I've had no trackpad issues at all. Everything works great. I got the i5-4gb version and due to the SSD, it works as well as my old XPS L502X (i7, 8gb) and that's saying a lot. WiFi is very good (tested speeds at home & I'm getting higher speeds than all other devices). Flip screen & overall build is solid -- feels sturdy (not cheap). Keyboard feels good, not cramped & its back lit. Speakers are surprisingly good IMO. On the net, I watched several reviews with the only complaints being 1) the trackpad, which is working nicely for me and 2) too heavy as a tablet -- sure, it's not an iPad but I didn't expect it to be. Still, very nice though. For those who have not used Windows 8, it takes a bit of getting used to (but easy). Best way I can describe it -- it's like having two operating systems (Win7 & Win8). Another plus -- minimal bloatware. I'll continue to give it a test run (thanks to the BestBuy RZ Silver 60-day returns confidence). But I'll tell you what -- this looks like a keeper!

    Versatile Laptop/Tablet - Solid performer

I looked at and worked many of the tablet/laptop offerings in the 12 to 14" range. Be advised there isn't one out there without at least 1 major flaw (HP, Lenovo, Sony, and yes Dell). Most of the issues I read about with the Dell XPS 12 were taken care of by upgrading the drivers, updating to Windows 8.1 and getting some advise from Dell support ( I found the Dell support desk in India far superior than the help I got from Dell in the Philippines). As noted in the title, I am most impressed with the crispness(accuracy) of the display - excellent! The webcam is stunning (especially when I use it to communicate with family members through Skype). Other pluses: nice I5 processor, back-lite keyboard, and the novelty of the flip screen (and functionality). I found the touch screen most responsive and accurate, and the SSD drive is fast!. The only flaws that I'm somewhat concerned with - though they are not show stoppers - are: a) trackpad - responsive and acceptable but not 100% - (ie double tap doesn't always give you and enter stroke); battery life - I have not gotten more than 3.5 hours from a full charge - and I am not running anything pushing the limits of the laptop (mostly web browsing and MS Office). To Dell's credit, they have offered to replace both the track pad and battery - not sure I want to chance returning it for repair. Compared to the other units I mentioned - these shortcomings are less harmful than the competitions'. I would recommend this unit - especially if you can get it for around the $700 reduced and open box price. If you want a new unit-wait for the release of the next generation XPS 12 - with the new and next generation Intel I5 processor (assured it gives 6 hour battery life) and yes -the new unit has a different trackpad.

Dell xps 12 configured with SSD and Core i5 rules

Best buy helped me out of a jam. They allowed me to get full credit from my purchase of a Samsung 5 ultra that would not accept a Intel SSD and would not awake from sleep mode properly and would no longer play streaming video just a month and a half old. When I opened up this Dell xps 12 the quality of the display is amazing 1080P it flips to be used as a tablet the SSD is fast fluid and does not use much power. The touch screen is flawless like the new Ipad with retina screen. The fit and finish is very professional and classy, durable and perfectly laid out. using the tablet works perfect this build is much nicer than apple offerings and comes with the touch screen both have identical hardware. I like windows 8 its much better its just takes a little to get used to Oh Dell gives the free book Windows8 for dummies with this purchase it makes using it easy. I had such terrible tech support from Samsung I will not buy another one of their products for some time. Samsung has locked down the bios and embedded windows keys make changing to an intel ssd impossible, Their support says you loose your warranty which is not the official online policy. Samsung has really made a lemon here and is failing to provide proper service. I am grateful Best buy saved the day and gave me full credit to purchase something else when they could not repair the Samsung ultra 5 after replacing the mother board and keyboard. Everything about the dell xps is superior its serves both purposes as a tablet and a ultra book Dell perfectly executed the design and functions of this pc it is the best ultrabook one out their in my opinion.

First of all, I'm an Apple fan. However currently Apple doesn't have a product like this. If they did It would probably be 5000.00. Windows 8 is what it is. Takes a while to get used to and get everything setup in regards to looking anything like Windows 7.If you're going to run Windows 8 and want a powerful versatile PC, check out this XPS18. Clean, One wire, Touch Screen, Tablet, Quiet, Decent Sound compared to a laptop, and a powerful computer on top of everything. It wont impress any one for running hard core games, but for an all in one family computer as a social point in the kitchen, living room or quick access somewhere in the house it's just perfect. We were looking at another laptop but it never moves so we just thought this was some great technology. Everyone loves this machine. Awesome screen. Looking and organizing photos is a great on the tablet. We use it mostly in the kitchen, the streaming tiles in windows 8 start screen are cool to go through while you're drinking coffee. Works great for us paying bills, doing emails, youtube, facebook or surfing the internet and most Office word documents. Windows Apps, are of no comparison to Apple or android but there's plenty enough to keep us all entertained. BestBuy is great, you can play with it before you buy it, have 14 days to return it for any reason. Ours was on sale for 899.00 and Dell could only match the price, so we choose to support our local economy just a little and purchase it at the store. Check this fully functional computer out before you buy another laptop especially if it's main use is for the home.

I searched for months for the right machine (and returned a couple disappointing purchases). I am now 4 months in with daily use I am in love with this machine. Because I touch it everyday, I wanted a machine that /feels/ good. Many tablets and ultrabooks (I checked them all!) have keyboards with no substance or give/feedback (including the macs). I write a lot, so I am picky about the keyboard. This Dell has a substantial keyboard. Backlit -- nice feature. Convertible allows angles - propped up for a small meeting and could show images. Hi-res screen is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Screen is a bit smaller than I had planned, but I am absolutely satisfied - resolution makes up for size. I am getting accustomed to Windows 8 and find it pretty great with this touch screen. I searched for months and feel I got my money's worth. Married to a tech geek in love with Lenovo, and even he admits this is a wonderful machine. Did I mention it feels good? Seriously, the materials make for a nice physical interaction with machine. Flip screen is solid -- I rarely use as a tablet, however. Still glad to have feature.

This Ultrabook is in a class of its own

What is not to like about this Ultrabook convertible?? I had first went with the Lenovo Twist, but it was not tested adequately before it left China. Intel Rapid Start and Expresscache programs did not have HD partitions setup for their use. Most users would not have even noticed. The worst part was the screen almost always froze in tablet mode. I gave it two weeks and returned it. On the other hand, this XPS 12 on sale is about $300 more than other Ultrabooks, but it works exactly as advertised by Dell and as stated in the many online reviews of this product. It is a light weight, solid machine made from aluminum and carbon fiber. The keys are large and logically organized. The keyboard is backlit -- another plus! Even the onscreen keyboard is the best I have used. The entry level Core i5, 4 gb ram, 128 gb mSATA drive is up to any task save hard core gaming. The screen is gorgeous and the brightest available bar none. Intel Widi lets you project 1080p on your big screen with the Netgear adapter. It is definitely a top notch choice for home users and will work well for SOHO users as well. Remember you can try this Ultrabook risk free thanks to Best Buy's return policy, so give this baby a test drive. It will not disappoint.

    amazing piece of technology

Ok, so i was originally searching for a tablet when i came across this thing. I'm a student and i use my pc for obvious studious things such as scrolling through wikipedia for an hour and downloading the occasional science/math software. When i first discovered this thing, all i could think was: Tablet and pc all in one? Now you're talking. Although reviews left me apprehensive about purchase, i decided to take the chance and splurge on this thing. Display and design are striking, 5 stars for sure. I find a lot of people complaining about how heavy this thing is in the tablet configuration. I personally don't find it uncomfortably heavy at all. I mean, its a 13" wide screen with a keyboard attached to it. You can't possibly expect it to weigh any less than 3 lbs. Win8 takes some time to get used to. Comes with a bunch of useless apps preinstalled which took me about ten minutes to figure out how to get rid of. I immediately noticed all the weird glitches associated with this machine. For example, my F11 and F12 keys (volume control) open up this coding window thing? Weird. Guess i have to stay away from those. Despite these problems i have to admit that this thing is growing on me. I'm hopelessly in love with the design and amazed by how this duel function simplifies your life. I guess you don't realize how handy these sort of options are until they are at your disposal. So to answer the most important question of all, Is this thing worth buying? My only response is maybe. I don't regret the purchase but i can understand why some people would. Glitches do exist. And they really shouldn't for the price. But if you have a computer savvy friend on hand to fix a couple of things for you, then the purchase is well worth it.

This is an amazing laptop/tablet. The screen is truly the best I've seen, best keyboard I've used on a laptop. The mouse is not sensitive but does the job, get a usb wireless mouse solves that issue.. I've retired my iPad and galaxy note 10.1. This is a true multitasking machine no restrictions with Windows 8. I have used several products in this category, this is the best all around machine out right now. I have no regrets with this purchase.

I was in the market to upgrade my 6 year old PC laptop. I have always been a PC kind of guy, never owned a Dell before but heard pretty good things. I was torn between the new MacBook Air 13" and this model. I ended up going with the Dell. Guess I'm just a creature of habit and familiarity. My frustration with Windows 8 as a first-time user eventually subsided, though it was nearly a deal breaker. I was really impressed with the solid build of the laptop, the ease with which to flip between laptop and tablet, touchscreen was pretty responsive but not perfect, and the HD resolution screen was amazing. However, after the initial excitement of owning a touchscreen convertible had faded, I found myself frustrated at Windows 8, disappointed with the <5-6 hr battery life, temperamental trackpad and touchscreen that would require rebooting, and how unnatural it felt to use both the trackpad and touchscreen to operate Windows 8. Not too mention that the tablet mode felt a little to heavy and bulky in hand/lap and not ideal for reading on the go or travel, as I already have an iPad Mini, but overall ultralight as a laptop. I gave it my best efforts for a week, then decided to return it for my first Apple MacBook Air 13" which I am very happy with. It was quite entertaining to see my friends go at it about PC vs Mac.

i use this laptop every day for the past 4 months. i play games listen to music, do my school work on it and it works great. However the lack of memory is a problem. i had to buy an external hard drive. The laptop also does not have a HDMI or an ethernet port which i had to buy addapters for both costing more money. I love this laptop though. i use it as a tablet a lot but rarely use the on screen keyboard. the speakers in this laptop are loud and the keyboard is very easy to type on. since the carbon fiber around the screen has no use other than what the screen clicks into it kind of protects the laptop if you happen to drop it and it does not damage the screen. the Track pad works well. this is a great compuiter for windows 8. i wouldnt suggest windows 8 unless you have a touch screen laptop

I purchased this a few weeks ago and overall have been very impressed. I love the fact that it is both a laptop and tablet. Be aware that it is a laptop first, tablet second. However I do use it quite a bit as a tablet on the couch in my lap. The machine itself is fast, resume from standby is almost instant and boot up is less than 10 seconds (however typically just leave it on or sleeping). Battery life seems to be around 5 hours, which is fine for me. The touchpad has some issues with 2 finger scrolling using some of the new apps, but typically I'm using the touchscreen for those anyways so not a big deal. Kids love it as well. I really do enjoy Windows 8 on this device.

I really like this tablet because it has the convenience of working on a laptop or a tablet. But I feel it is too pricey. The only real irritating thing about it is you will be in tablet mode and the screen will just freeze and no matter what you will have to restart the machine.

I had the computer for 2 weeks before it was useless. Immedietly the computer was having hardware issues. Two weeks after having it, the hard drive was completely destroyed. It ended up needing a new hard drive, motherboard, sisterboards, heat sink, and fan. Dell ended up replacing it all. Less than 48 hours later, the hard drive failed again. Dell customer service said they have been having a lot of issues with the hard drive being able to handle the capabilities of the computer. I ended up returning it as it was not worth the price or the trouble. I paid over $1350 (I had the i7) and expected it to last more than 2 weeks. I would definitely avoid buying this computer until all the glitches are fixed. The flip screen was cool, but the rest of the computer was a mess. The mouse also was horrible to work with (as it would not work properly...another issue dell said they were aware of).

This machine has some nice qualities, but there are several big flaws that ruin it. The first and most noticeable is the trackpad. It's very unresponsive and hard to use. The cursor stalls frequently, especially when moving it to from right to left on open webpages, and the gestures hardly work. The pinch zoom is very poor and the palm rejection doesn't work. There's no easy way to turn it off either. Driver upgrades make no difference. The next issue is the noisy fan. It cycles on and off frequently and is very winey. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard in a quiet environment. Next is the battery life. With all the power savings features on, it usually averages just over 4 hours. Finally, it's really too heavy to use as a tablet. It's very hard to hold on to and hurts my wrist to use as a tablet.
