Pet hair gets into the belt drive of the vac cleaning head and causes burning smell and if not maintained regularly will cause damage to the belt drive. Dyson has replace the head twice.

This is a great model for homes with pets, as it features powerful suction, whole-machine HEPA filtration and tools that help pick up pet hair with ease. If you have multiple pets in the home, you may find that your machine does need more maintenance, including keeping the brush bar clear of hair or other debris, as it can wind up damaging the brush bar motor, if it's able to get wrapped around the spindles of the brush bar itself.

I am not one who writes reviews but after having this vacuum for five months, I just had to let others know... this vacuum is terrible, especially for the money! I bought this after my initial Dyson died after many many years. I have a short hair dog who does not shed much but still wanted a vacuum that was good for dog hair. I search a lot of reviews and ended up with this one. Since the first week, nothing but problems. This vacuum constantly clogs. Please know, I am not a dirty person with a dirty house full of dog hair and junk all over the floor. I was not expecting miracles from this maching but my goodness... this thing is a pain in the butt. Every two uses I need to flip it upside down and unclog it. Also, the feature that is supposed to vacuum on hard floor... it's a joke. The vacuum always spits everything around on the hard wood...never sucks it up. I wish I could return this thing bc I truly hate it but cant swallow pitching it after spending $500 on this thing. I have never cursed out an inanimate object as much as I do this thing. Save yourself lots of money and sanity.... find a different vacuum!

The Dyson Ball Animal 2 gives the strongest suction of any Dyson upright. With the direct-drive brushbar, the cleanerhead delves into carpet to grab any debris, dust and hair. With the cleanerhead being self-adjusting, you can move between carpet and hard flooring with ease. It also comes with the tangle-free turbine tool to grab hair from other surfaces in your home.
Routine maintenance is required for the machine to keep the performance stellar, but the steps are super simple and outlined in the user manual. You can also find videos to provide visual steps on Dyson.com. Depending on your usage and how often, there may be the need to perform maintenance more often and this is completely normal.
