I use the Apple Home kit eco system at my house so I like being able to control the temperature of my home by using voice commands. I don’t care to use any of the programming options like setting the temp when I come and go or settings for day or night. For me it’s just a way to control the temp by voice instead of using my iPhone app or getting up to change it manually.

A smart thermostat that you can control from your iPhone is nice, but if you’re a fan of Siri then HomeKit-compatibly is a must. can be controlled using Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, If you’re curious about HomeKit and in the market for a smart thermostat, the ecobee3 just might be the best option yet …

We had to have it installed by an HVAC guy who ended up needing to do some rewiring. The cheap labor that installed our unit did it wrong. But now that it’s in, it has been saving money and giving peace of mind knowing we can check from anywhere

The product is having more features for the best price compared to other company products. It is very easy to install and configure the device by following the instructions. The power consumtion was reduced after installing the device in a smart way by configuring the options.

Everyone needs a WiFi thermostat of some sort. I have three Ecobee's and one Nest. I prefer the Ecobee for two main reasons, remote sensors for averaging and ease of programming/scheduling.

    Impressive smart thermostat so far!

This is my personal review on the Ecobee3 Lite smart thermostat, which I got during a great promotion ran by Best Buy which included a free Echo Dot. I've had this thermostat for just about a month now and have been trying to learn most of its features since then. The first thing you must know is that this device requires a C-wire for power since it does not have a backup battery. This may be a challenge or a problem for a person who has little-to-none knowledge of how HVAC systems work as it will require the user to run an included adapter (Power Extender Kit) from your HVAC system which will eventually provide power to the Ecobee3 Lite thermostat. The instructions are very straight forward but again, if you do not feel comfortable opening your HVAC system and connecting the wires to the PEK, I would recommend to hire a licensed technician to do the work or buy a different smart thermostat that does not require a C-wire. Otherwise, the installation takes roughly half an hour (which is what it took me to complete with no prior experience of replacing/installing a thermostat). Out of the box, you get the thermostat, wire labels, a white backplate (in case you need to cover any holes from your previous thermostat), the Power Extender Kit (PEK, in case your thermostat does not have a C-wire), a backplate (to connect the wires), a couple of screws & wall anchors, and the installation manual. You will need a precision screw driver to remove wires from the old thermostat, a 3/16" drill bit, a phillips screw driver and a drill to facilitate the installation. If you do not have a cordless/corded drill, you can still get around with the installation but will take some additional time & effort. Remember to always follow safety procedures before working with electricity around your house to avoid serious injuries. Now onto the features I've tried so far. The Ecobee3 Lite supports a wide variety of third-party integrations such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home Kit, Google Assistant to name a few. This gives a wide range of users to be able to control their smart thermostat with their voice, smart phone or automation. When you are initializing setting up the device, you are greeted with an Ecobee welcome message. You then have to give it a name, configure your Wireless network for communication, and most importantly, register your device. The device has three different comfort settings; Home, Away, and Sleep. These settings can be modified to your needs which can then be added to your weekly schedule with a specific time to run them. If there is one annoying thing I do not like so far is the fact that you cannot remove all comfort settings for a specific day from your weekly schedule. It must have at least one comfort setting to run unless you turn off the HVAC system from the thermostat. The thermostat by default comes with the "Smart Recovery" feature enabled, which Ecobee support said this feature allows your thermostat to understand your AC/heating pattern in how long it takes for your home to get to the desired temperature from your schedule. The thermostat takes into account the performance of the HVAC equipment relative to the effects of the inside temperature & predicts how long it will take to bring your home to a given temperature. This basically means that if you have your schedule set to "Away" mode from 8AM - 5PM (to be within a certain temperature range before it turns on your AC/heater), and then starting at 5PM you have it set to "Home" (again to be at a certain temperature range), it can still turn on your AC/heater during the "Away" mode in order to get to the desired temperature by the time you get home at 5PM, for instance. I do not like this "Smart Recovery" feature as the purpose of the "Away" schedule I set up is so that the A/C is never on while I'm not home. If you are like me, you can turn off this feature directly from the thermostat by going to Main Menu > Settings > Preferences > Heating/Cooling Smart Recovery. I also like the fact that their software is very similar across all platforms (mobile apps, website & thermostat screen), this makes it a lot easier to navigate around without having to learn it all over again when using a different device. You can also restrict access control to the thermostat by setting up a code in order to access the system. This is great if you have kids in the house or if using in a shared environment such as an office where only certain individuals may have access to change its settings without having to install a lock box on. The Ecobee3 Lite supports the proprietary room sensors, which can be added to different rooms and balance the temperature around your house. This is probably more suitable for two-story homes or bigger homes where temperature ranges drastically at certain times of the day. If you have a newer home with an open-floor plan, these sensors may not be very useful. Below is a summary of the Pros and Cons I have found out so far: Pros: - Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple's Home Kit & Google Assistant. - Uses geofencing to detect when you enter/exit a certain zone (configured by user) which will either trigger the thermostat to turn on or off. - Wireless connectivity compatible to 802.11 b/g/n @ 2.4GHz - 3-year warranty (that's two more years than the Nest) - Compatible with most HVAC systems (see Ecobee's website for additional info) - Schedule "Vacation" mode to overwrite your weekly schedule and keep HVAC system off if necessary. - Intuitive & seamless integration of their software across all platforms (smartphone app, online page, & thermostat's home screen) - Fast-response & bright touchscreen. - Access controls allows only those individuals with the configured code to change its settings. - Supports room sensors to add around the house and balance the temperature. - Useful data reports about your home's temperature & system information. - Can set reminders to change furnace filters & HVAC maintenance. - Great design. Cons: - Does not come with a backup battery, hence requiring a C-wire (this may be a problem for older homes). - Cannot create additional custom settings. - Cannot remove custom settings from weekly schedule. - Does not support dehumidifiers (this is more of a personal preference)

    Really bad dynamic temperature tracking

This graph shows the reported Ecobee3 temperature vs a kitchen thermometer. It shows 24 minutes of cooling trying to get the temperature from 72 to 71. The actual temperature drops from 73.2 to 67.9. People were yelling at me to stop it. It should have been satisfied after 5 1/2 minutes. Support doesn't believe there is a problem with the design and claims that there is no firmware fix. Perhaps they are measuring the case temperature of the thermostat rather than the air temperature?

I am glad I went with the Ecobee 3 Lite smart thermostat. I researched between the Nest and the Ecobee, but I ultimately went with the Ecobee 3 Lite smart thermostat because of the design and available features. It was easy to install with the step-by-step instructions, and I was able to easily connect it to the wireless network. It works great with Amazon Alexa and my Samsung SmartThings. I like having the ability to remotely control my smart thermostat, and I know I will save money because it will automatically turn off when I am not at home.

The ecobee 3 lite Smart Thermostat in Black is a well-designed, energy-efficient smart home upgrade that balances affordability and essential features for homeowners looking to reduce energy costs and enhance convenience. Pros: • Ease of Use: The ecobee 3 lite has a user-friendly interface with a responsive touchscreen and intuitive setup. Pairing it with the ecobee app allows for simple control over your home’s temperature from anywhere, making it convenient for managing your energy usage. • Smart Home Integration: It works seamlessly with major smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings. This integration makes it easy to incorporate the thermostat into your existing smart home ecosystem. • Energy Savings: The thermostat’s scheduling and remote control features help save energy and reduce utility bills. It offers personalized insights and tips to further optimize energy usage. • Sleek Design: The minimalist black design looks modern and fits well in most home interiors. It’s unobtrusive and stylish, blending with any decor. • Room Sensor Compatibility: While the 3 lite doesn’t come with sensors, it supports ecobee room sensors (sold separately), which help balance temperatures across multiple rooms, improving overall comfort. Cons: • Limited Features Compared to Higher Models: Unlike the more advanced ecobee models, the 3 lite lacks built-in occupancy sensors and the ability to control humidifiers, dehumidifiers, or ventilators, which may be a drawback for those with complex HVAC needs. • Sensor Cost: If you want to take advantage of room sensors, purchasing them separately adds to the overall cost. • Wiring Requirements: It typically needs a C-wire for installation. For homes without a C-wire, setup can be a bit more complicated, although ecobee provides an adapter for these situations. Overall, the ecobee 3 lite Smart Thermostat is an excellent choice for budget-conscious homeowners who still want the convenience of a smart thermostat. It’s a reliable, straightforward option with enough features to make managing your home’s climate easy while saving energy. For those looking for additional HVAC control or built-in sensors, considering a higher-tier model might be worthwhile.

    Amazing Thermostat

I got my Ecobee 3 Lite few weeks ago and I can't be happier with it. The installation process was seamless even on my four cable wiring, using the Power Extender Kit provided by Ecobee and the VERY clear instructions provided with the unit. The functionality provided is amazing. I’m using Geofencing on my iPhone (now also available for Android). Every time I leave the house, the Ecobee goes into Away mode and saves energy. Upon return, it goes back to schedule and keeps the house comfortable. It also has different threshold configuration settings like minimum external temperature to prevent your AC from triggering if it’s too cold outside, preventing damage to your AC unit. They also provide you with all the stats you need to check the efficiency of your home, check the threshold triggering your heating / AC. This lets you see the actual conditions triggering the system in order to let you make better decisions and adjust the setting accordingly. I would recommend the Ecobee 3 to anyone looking for a smart thermostat.
