Battery died immediately
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I ordered these for additional sensors and one of them had a dead battery within 2 weeks. I put a new battery in and it died within days. I contacted the company and it took them weeks to send a replacement, although they were very responsive to inquiry.

Works great!
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works like a charm and does exactly what is promised. Adding them to the thermostat can be a little confusing, but we figured it out. Now we have all of the hot spots in our house covered.

It takes some effort to program it.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have mix feelings as you can only adjust these sensors within certain boundaries and they are somewhat challenging to program and adjust.

Not worth it in my opinion

SmartSensor - splee. They do nothing to help.
||Posted . Owned for 7 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Absolutely useless. Complete waste of money. Followed the instructions to a T. And...why is the room that we are in 80° and the rest of the house is 75°? No clue. Placed 5 feet high? Yes. No hot or cold spots? Nope. Thermostat is average as well. Wish I would have kept my 1992 Honeywell Thermostat on the wall.

All ecobee products are trash
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You can't use these sensors to set the temp by a specific room. For instance I wanted the thermostat to use my bedroom sensor to maintain temp at night. But there is not option to do that. It's just there to confirm its not the temperature you want. I returned them.

Posted .Hi there,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with our SmartSensors. Here are a few steps you can take if your SmartSensors are not pairing.
Reset the Sensor:
1. Remove the battery from the SmartSensor, place back in + side down and close battery lid.
2. Power-cycle your ecobee smart thermostat by removing it from the wall and leaving it off for about two minutes, then placing it back on.
3. Once your ecobee smart thermostat has rebooted, start the pairing process again in the app, once the QR code is scanned, place the battery in the sensor with + side up and close the lid.
4. Do not mount until pairing is successful:
Ensure the sensor isn't mounted until the pairing process is complete.

Works exactly as expected
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well made, good looking, and easy to use, the ecobee smart sensors are a set it up and forget about it device that does exactly what you would expect, monitor motion in a room and if you have an ecobee thermostat, monitor temperature. I’ve been using these two sensors in conjunction with my ecobee smart camera and the ecobee haven service for about a week now and haven’t had any problems with the sensors, but haven’t been blown away either. Setup is fairly simple. You pull a tab on the device, scan a QR code on the back of the device and the ecobee app will set the device up automatically to your ecobee thermostat or ecobee smart camera. Installing the sensor in a room is as simple as it gets, either use the metal base that just pops on via magnets or use the wall mount with accompanying screw. I chose the metal base and liked the way it fit on the shelf, definitely a design that blends in easy. I connected my sensors to the ecobee smart camera to work as motion detects for the security system and they did what they say they do. It picked up motion in the room when the system was armed and did a good job ignoring my two large dogs roaming the house. If you’re ok with paying for the ecobee Haven service ($5 a month) and have the ecobee camera, these sensors are good for monitoring motion in your home. I do have a few complaints about these sensors. The first being lack of use within the app. I expected to be able to view temperature or humidity readings on the sensors in the rooms via the ecobee app, but as far as I can tell that isn’t possible with my setup. Next is the lack of compatibility. Unless you have an ecobee thermostat or ecobee camera, don’t expect to get any use out of these. There is no compatibility with other systems like SmartThings or HomeKit. My third complaint was the functionality without the Haven service. Unless you are will to pay the $5 a month there is no way to get even push notifications when motion is detected. Which leads to my next problem with this device, the quality of notifications. In my opinions push notifications should be immediately useful. That is not the case with Haven intrusion notifications. Rather that the notifications telling you exactly where the motion was detected, the notification just tells you to open the app to see what exactly happened. In my opinion this isn’t a great setup. Overall, if you already have the ecobee smart camera or thermostat and are just looking for the easiest solution to build out your security system or thermostat, you’ll want to go with these. If you are a DYIer, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

My smart sensor says pass on this...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This review is written based on the SmartSensors being used with the Ecobee Smart Camera and the SmartSensors for motion and the Haven monitoring service. You have to look at the Ecobee products as an entire ecosystem rather just the individual components. Also, these sensors only work Ecobee products. For a full understanding, please see my review of the Ecobee camera. I do not have the Ecobee thermostat and the Ecobee Smartsensor is really designed to work with thermostat. The sensors came long before the Ecobee camera so this a bit of repurposing. For my use , I used them for the motion sensors. Now motion sensor is really a misnomer, they do not sense motion. They use a thermal sensor to determine a thermal signature of the object entering the range of sensor. It’s a neat idea that helps eliminate false positives such as a pet. As far as I can tell, no other manufacturer uses a sensor this. It would have been a nice feature if Ecobee enabled these sensors to read temperatures . So while this design is nice, it’s real world application seems to not work well and is hit and miss. At first, the SmartSensor only worked once for motion detection. I’ve turned off autopilot, sat in another room while I disarmed and armed, restarted the camera – it just would not work. Finally, I changed the sensitivity from medium to high and started to get some results. There tends to be some latency between the when the sensor senses a presence and reacts. I’m not completely sold this is going to work consistently so I would not buy this unless you have thermostat. In reference to the Ecobee thermostat use , Ecobee states “SmartSensor sets the temperature for comfort in the rooms that matter most and helps balance your home’s temperature by managing hot or cold spots.” This is where something looks good on paper but the real-world application is not always the case. The idea is if you use a room more that it will turn on your heat and cool for that room for sensing both temperature and occupancy. That’s great until you realize that your thermostat is located in your hallway for a reason. For a forced hot air system , your return is usually near the hallway where your return is and , generally, no supply vents. The thermostat is there because once the return air has reached temperature, the rest of the probably has reached temperature as well. The reality is unless you have a furnace that modulates it’s power and multiple zones, I do not think you will see much of a benefit. In other words, if you do not have a smart zoning system with a smart furnace, you will not realize ( in most cases) the claimed benefits of these smart sensors. Since I do not own the thermostat, I’m not going to go in to too many details on the thermostat integration. I will say the benefits touted as worded by Ecobee may not be real world. I think there should be more emphasis on comfort through using the sensors as averaging the temperatures from locations in a house or even as a remote room sensor where the entire function of thermostat is governed by the sensor location rather than the temp sensor in the thermostat. Barring the above about the thermostat integration, let’s look at the sensor itself, installation and some of the features ( or lack thereof.) Build quality is top notch, it is small a relatively and unobtrusive . There is a wall mount option but it really is designed to be about 4 feet off the ground and on a flat surface. Setup is took less than a minute with pulling the tab from the battery and following the simple instructions in the app. As stated in Ecobee camera review, Ecobee’s setup is top notch and is one of the best out there. Once the Ecobee Smartsensor is in the app it , well, does nothing. Nothing to tell you the battery level, nothing to tell you the temperature in a room..,, just nothing. For comparison , I have Samsung motion sensors that sense true motion ( and far faster and consistently) and tell me the temperature. They are also half the cost. I also have an Aeotec Multisensor that senses temperature, humidity, light, UV and vibrations that is more money but integrates into Samsung Smartthings ( which Ecobee SmartSensors are supposed to one day with the Ecobee Camera.) The point is this sensor should do something more than it does for the $80 for two of them. It really feels like they just found another use for an existing sensor and is a vehicle for selling the thermostat. There is nothing wrong with that, I would just like to see a lower price or more for your money. In summary, it is hard to recommend this based on the cost , inconsistent results and the fact that Ecobee charges you to use the features of the sensors and camera. If you do not have the thermostat , but want the Ecobee camera and can swallow paying additional to use it for each ; pass on these sensors and look to Ecobee Smartsensors for windows and doors. They do a better job at motion sensing ( although not perfect) and are rock solid for entry protection.
