Not worth it in my opinion

Posted .Hi Danny! ecobee SmartSensor works to measure the temperature and occupancy in the rooms that matter most to you. Often thermostats are located in rooms or hallways you don't frequent. To control air flow, I recommend checking out smart vents from Flair or Keen.

SmartSensor - splee. They do nothing to help.
||Posted . Owned for 7 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Absolutely useless. Complete waste of money. Followed the instructions to a T. And...why is the room that we are in 80° and the rest of the house is 75°? No clue. Placed 5 feet high? Yes. No hot or cold spots? Nope. Thermostat is average as well. Wish I would have kept my 1992 Honeywell Thermostat on the wall.

All ecobee products are trash
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. You can't use these sensors to set the temp by a specific room. For instance I wanted the thermostat to use my bedroom sensor to maintain temp at night. But there is not option to do that. It's just there to confirm its not the temperature you want. I returned them.

Posted .Hi there,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with our SmartSensors. Here are a few steps you can take if your SmartSensors are not pairing.
Reset the Sensor:
1. Remove the battery from the SmartSensor, place back in + side down and close battery lid.
2. Power-cycle your ecobee smart thermostat by removing it from the wall and leaving it off for about two minutes, then placing it back on.
3. Once your ecobee smart thermostat has rebooted, start the pairing process again in the app, once the QR code is scanned, place the battery in the sensor with + side up and close the lid.
4. Do not mount until pairing is successful:
Ensure the sensor isn't mounted until the pairing process is complete.

Works exactly as expected
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Well made, good looking, and easy to use, the ecobee smart sensors are a set it up and forget about it device that does exactly what you would expect, monitor motion in a room and if you have an ecobee thermostat, monitor temperature. I’ve been using these two sensors in conjunction with my ecobee smart camera and the ecobee haven service for about a week now and haven’t had any problems with the sensors, but haven’t been blown away either. Setup is fairly simple. You pull a tab on the device, scan a QR code on the back of the device and the ecobee app will set the device up automatically to your ecobee thermostat or ecobee smart camera. Installing the sensor in a room is as simple as it gets, either use the metal base that just pops on via magnets or use the wall mount with accompanying screw. I chose the metal base and liked the way it fit on the shelf, definitely a design that blends in easy. I connected my sensors to the ecobee smart camera to work as motion detects for the security system and they did what they say they do. It picked up motion in the room when the system was armed and did a good job ignoring my two large dogs roaming the house. If you’re ok with paying for the ecobee Haven service ($5 a month) and have the ecobee camera, these sensors are good for monitoring motion in your home. I do have a few complaints about these sensors. The first being lack of use within the app. I expected to be able to view temperature or humidity readings on the sensors in the rooms via the ecobee app, but as far as I can tell that isn’t possible with my setup. Next is the lack of compatibility. Unless you have an ecobee thermostat or ecobee camera, don’t expect to get any use out of these. There is no compatibility with other systems like SmartThings or HomeKit. My third complaint was the functionality without the Haven service. Unless you are will to pay the $5 a month there is no way to get even push notifications when motion is detected. Which leads to my next problem with this device, the quality of notifications. In my opinions push notifications should be immediately useful. That is not the case with Haven intrusion notifications. Rather that the notifications telling you exactly where the motion was detected, the notification just tells you to open the app to see what exactly happened. In my opinion this isn’t a great setup. Overall, if you already have the ecobee smart camera or thermostat and are just looking for the easiest solution to build out your security system or thermostat, you’ll want to go with these. If you are a DYIer, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

My smart sensor says pass on this...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This review is written based on the SmartSensors being used with the Ecobee Smart Camera and the SmartSensors for motion and the Haven monitoring service. You have to look at the Ecobee products as an entire ecosystem rather just the individual components. Also, these sensors only work Ecobee products. For a full understanding, please see my review of the Ecobee camera. I do not have the Ecobee thermostat and the Ecobee Smartsensor is really designed to work with thermostat. The sensors came long before the Ecobee camera so this a bit of repurposing. For my use , I used them for the motion sensors. Now motion sensor is really a misnomer, they do not sense motion. They use a thermal sensor to determine a thermal signature of the object entering the range of sensor. It’s a neat idea that helps eliminate false positives such as a pet. As far as I can tell, no other manufacturer uses a sensor this. It would have been a nice feature if Ecobee enabled these sensors to read temperatures . So while this design is nice, it’s real world application seems to not work well and is hit and miss. At first, the SmartSensor only worked once for motion detection. I’ve turned off autopilot, sat in another room while I disarmed and armed, restarted the camera – it just would not work. Finally, I changed the sensitivity from medium to high and started to get some results. There tends to be some latency between the when the sensor senses a presence and reacts. I’m not completely sold this is going to work consistently so I would not buy this unless you have thermostat. In reference to the Ecobee thermostat use , Ecobee states “SmartSensor sets the temperature for comfort in the rooms that matter most and helps balance your home’s temperature by managing hot or cold spots.” This is where something looks good on paper but the real-world application is not always the case. The idea is if you use a room more that it will turn on your heat and cool for that room for sensing both temperature and occupancy. That’s great until you realize that your thermostat is located in your hallway for a reason. For a forced hot air system , your return is usually near the hallway where your return is and , generally, no supply vents. The thermostat is there because once the return air has reached temperature, the rest of the probably has reached temperature as well. The reality is unless you have a furnace that modulates it’s power and multiple zones, I do not think you will see much of a benefit. In other words, if you do not have a smart zoning system with a smart furnace, you will not realize ( in most cases) the claimed benefits of these smart sensors. Since I do not own the thermostat, I’m not going to go in to too many details on the thermostat integration. I will say the benefits touted as worded by Ecobee may not be real world. I think there should be more emphasis on comfort through using the sensors as averaging the temperatures from locations in a house or even as a remote room sensor where the entire function of thermostat is governed by the sensor location rather than the temp sensor in the thermostat. Barring the above about the thermostat integration, let’s look at the sensor itself, installation and some of the features ( or lack thereof.) Build quality is top notch, it is small a relatively and unobtrusive . There is a wall mount option but it really is designed to be about 4 feet off the ground and on a flat surface. Setup is took less than a minute with pulling the tab from the battery and following the simple instructions in the app. As stated in Ecobee camera review, Ecobee’s setup is top notch and is one of the best out there. Once the Ecobee Smartsensor is in the app it , well, does nothing. Nothing to tell you the battery level, nothing to tell you the temperature in a room..,, just nothing. For comparison , I have Samsung motion sensors that sense true motion ( and far faster and consistently) and tell me the temperature. They are also half the cost. I also have an Aeotec Multisensor that senses temperature, humidity, light, UV and vibrations that is more money but integrates into Samsung Smartthings ( which Ecobee SmartSensors are supposed to one day with the Ecobee Camera.) The point is this sensor should do something more than it does for the $80 for two of them. It really feels like they just found another use for an existing sensor and is a vehicle for selling the thermostat. There is nothing wrong with that, I would just like to see a lower price or more for your money. In summary, it is hard to recommend this based on the cost , inconsistent results and the fact that Ecobee charges you to use the features of the sensors and camera. If you do not have the thermostat , but want the Ecobee camera and can swallow paying additional to use it for each ; pass on these sensors and look to Ecobee Smartsensors for windows and doors. They do a better job at motion sensing ( although not perfect) and are rock solid for entry protection.

Such a great idea!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The little sensors really do the trick. Helping balance the temperature in the 2 rooms I use the most. The are small and unobtrusive, easy to setup and work great!! I attached one to a wall and the other sitting on a bookshelf with a bunch of owl figurines. They are not even noticeable.

Clever
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The room sensor is clever, made well, and exceptionally durable. I dropped one of mine from 10 feet in the air on accident onto our tile floor. Luckily, I had the magnet base on because the unit bounced off the base and seems to have taken the blow quite well and is still providing accurate and reliable information. To adjust you need to accompany them with the like branded thermostat. To check compatibility please visit Ecobees website directly prior to purchasing. The room sensor is a great feature if your house is like our and the HVAC does not hit every room equally. Or maybe it is that my son’s room just has too many windows. Either way, I placed the sensor in there and was able to adjust as needed. I would note that I would not recommend for houses with large dogs. No matter where I place them, they seem to love my dogos and wants to “Sense” them all day long

Very Low-Profile and Simple. Almost Too Simple
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The ecobee SmartSensor is easy to set up and get going. I do like how small they are, and how you can set them up practically anywhere. Since I don't have a SmartThermostat, these aren't too useful. While they have multiple sensors within, they're really only useful if you have an ecobee SmartThermostat. They'll only act as motion detectors without one, at which point you're better off with something that is dedicated to motion detection. And we've had some issues with ecobee Haven, so we don't seem to get any notifications, which is about all we'll get out of them. These aren't really a must-have unless you really want to monitor even the smallest things.

Easy to set up.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great multipurpose sensor; it can log motion so the system knows if there is an occupant in the room, but it also can log temperature (as long as you have an ecobee thermostat that is). The sensors are super simple to add as well, just open the ecobee app click add device take a picture of the QR code and your good to go. One of the easiest devices I have ever set up. I would say if you only have a camera and door sensors this extra sensor pack is probably not super useful unless you need to monitor for motion specifically in an area, but if you have an ecobee thermostat then the usefulness goes up as it will also sense the temperature of remote rooms which is great. Overall great easy product to set up.

Room Temp Sensors That Work
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really like these, simple as that! The setup was super simple and I am able to have it adjust for a room that is either occupied or not with some simple in app and thermostat adjustments. They work great with the Ecobee 4. There is not much to say other than if you want your house to adjust your temp fast in a room that does not have the thermostat in it, these are the best way period!

Much Better Than the First Generation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My Ecobee thermostat came with the original first generation sensors, which were a bit of a hassle to initially setup. Now of course once they're set that isn't really a problem, but if you had multiples I could see it being a bit more annoying. Setup can now be done through the app instead of at the thermostat, scanning the QR code on the back is all it takes to add the sensor. Visually, they look considerably better that the first generation, now with the aluminum stand vs plastic and the sensor is the entire front face of the unit, rather than a tiny square. They are a bit thicker, and have a CRT TV-esque vibe to them, which means they may not look at nice mounted to a wall, but left on their stand they appear very modern. In my experience between a first gen and these new sensors, they do pick up on motion/occupancy more quickly than the previous ones, but they still take a really long time to reset to a "no-motion" state. Although that's probably by design and hard coded within the Ecobee software. There isn't much to say about these other than the work well, pair easily, and look much better than the first generation. If you're an Ecobee owner and are looking to add more sensors to your home, you can't go wrong here.

Works with SmartCamera and Ecobee Thermostat
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The smart sensors were a breeze to set up. They work well with both the camera and thermostat. I had 1 room that was always warmer than the rest of the house. After installing the Sensors the system stayed on a little longer to reduce the temperature in that room. This is a good addon to the thermostat. I would recommend this to family and friends.

Good Occupancy and Temperature Sensor Hackable
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ecobee SmartSensor is a combination room occupancy sensor and temperature sensor. This lets you get temperature readings for muliple rooms or places in your home and allows your thermostat to better ensure that each room gets at least to the set temperature. The occupancy sensor part lets you make decisions based on whether there's actually someone in a room who would be affected by the temperature there. This is nice because if there's a room that gets much hotter than the rest of the house in the summer time, but is not used very often, you don't need to run the AC all the time to get the average down or get that room cool - just when there's actually someone there. If you don't want the occupancy behavior, you can just turn the sensor to face away from the room. It still measure temperature, but will always think the room is empty. The sensors work well and do a good job of tracking temperature. They matched up with the existing temperature-only sensors that I was using. These are battery powered, so don't need to be based by an outlet. The sensors can be wall mounted or placed on a flat surface. I would recommend placing on a flat surface like a table or bookshelf. The reason being size. It seems like Ecobee's new line is not very unobtrusive. As you don't interact with these, they should really fade into the background. These are not wifi sensors, so it is not straightforward to use them standalone. They connect to an Ecobee thermostat as the "base station" and you interact that way. Once nice things about these is that they have IFTTT capability - albeit throught the thermostat. There's a third party app that can expose the sensors directly, which is nice when you want to script home automation actions based on the occupancy sensor beyond controlling temperature. Right now I can get lights to turn on and off automatically when someone enters and exits a room. My next step is setting brightness of the lights going on/off based on time of day, so I avoid potentially waking those who are sleeping.

Sensors are cool, help monitor house temperature
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received a 2 pack of sensors to help monitor the temperature of my house. I have been pretty impressed so far. The sensors are very easy to setup. You hit the "plus" sign in the app and select "room sensors". Then you scan the QR code on the sensor and it pairs to your system. Then it gives you step by step instructions on how to setup, which is pretty much placing it in a room. It then shows you the temp in that room and also detects presence in the room. So the system will not run if a room is too warm/cool but nobody is in it. Also, I went out of town and the system did not run as much as it detected nobody was home. The app shows you the room temps on the home page of the app. It works flawlessly. The app has run without glitches or bugs. Ecobee has a very refined app that works great. I am just now appreciating it that I have a few more of the Ecobee products (camera, door sensors, ect). Overall, I really enjoy the Ecobee lineup and their app makes you want to keep using their ecosystem of smart home products.

Great added security for the Video Camera
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. These sensors add so much functionality to the Ecobee ecosystem. I mistakenly thought that they were only useful for the thermostat system, but they also add monitoring for the security camera system. It will detect movement in any room that they are set up in. The real power comes with the temperature monitoring if used with the Ecboee thermostat. I wasn't able to use this feature as of yet, as I have an older furnace with an odd board. Ecobee provides a wiring harness to convert an older system to work with their thermostats and have been very accommodating while working with me. The overall system works flawlessly and I know that the sensors work well with detecting movement. I am looking forward to the thermostat functionality once I get it working.
