ET-3850 ADF doesn’t work, right out of the box

I bought one of these nice smart tank printers and went with this model because it had an ADF. Little did I know that the ATF simply would not work. I took the printer in and met with the geek squad and they confirm that the document feeder wasn’t working properly. They ordered another ET – 3850 and delivered it. I went through all the process of setting that up and again the ADF didn’t work. this time, there was a 3 inch long plastic shaft/gear that fell out of the ADF. Other aspects of this all in one seem to work. but it is comical that the ATF doesn’t work. My only option is to return this second defective, out of the box, Epson printer, and get a replacement. This issue is not at all to do with Best Buy, it’s all on the manufacturer, Epson.

    Small home printer

Pros: Small foot print. Fast enough for a home printer. Print quality is good. Will print on both sides. Filling the large volume ink tank Cons: Will NOT scan, copy, from both sides using the ADF (automatic document feeder) (it will copy and print to both sides but it copies one side and prints the same info on both sides of the copy - nice option if that's what you need). The software will NOT allow you to load a multipage document to scan or copy and, after scanning one side, flip the stack, scan the other side, and arrange the document pages in the correct order - you must arrange the pages manually (which the software does allow you to do). This is a huge downside if you scan or copy multipage documents often. Not tested: Color printing except for the test pages which worked fine. I have not purchased additional ink yet so have not tried non-Epson ink. Overall, a nice small printer that has met my home printing needs.

So far, so good! - except for ADF

I bought this printer after a recommendation from a coworker about the ecotank line of printers. I had an Epson workforce 3650 before. No issues with it and I loved it, but preferred to try and save ink costs. My work requires a ton of printing. What a difference with this printer! I love the technology of it. Set-up was super easy with the app. I have not had any issues with the quality of the printing. It looks great. I had to print pictures earlier this week and those were nice quality as well. There is a way to set presets for the type of paper that you upload into the printer and it makes it faster than manually inputting each time. When I had the photos print on 4 x 6, glossy premium paper, it adjusted and turned out great! I’ve use the copy, scan, and print functions. My only issue has been with the ADF. Every time I try to use it it says there is a paper jam. I have a separate scanner, Epson 500W and I use that for scanning so the ADF isn’t a big deal for me but I’m definitely reaching out to Epson about it. I’ve only had it set up for about a week but so far, it’s a keeper.

    ET-3850 quick review

Most all of what has been written has been pretty accurate. The phone app for WiFI hookup and installation was amazingly easy and well done. The unit at first is very noisy and was about to return it. Quiet mode was set on the printer. What I learned later is on the document to be printed had opened up the printer app and discovered another "quiet mode" there. Once that was set the printer did get considerably quiet. This unit replaced my 2006 Canon Pixma 870. Yes two head replacement later really struggled to buy a replacement. As you can see it has been very reliable. Now the down side. The paper tray only holds 8.5 X 11 paper and then not very well. The tray does not secure the paper on all sides just one. If legal paper is to be used the tray edge can be lowered and the paper laid in there. Guess that is how the footprint was reduced from the Pixma I had. The scanner platen cannot scan legal sized documents. Unless someone has a idea. The ADF may scan them but here is the down side. The ADF paper holder seems to fit only 8.5 X 11 paper. If a stack of legal paper is to be scanned they will fall back due to lack of support. It has a four inch overhang. When the document is scanned the paper holder again is too short. The legal paper will over hang by four inches. Over all it's an Okay unit but not for college or small business use if legal docs are also part of the owner's need for scanning and printing.

Nice printer/scanner ,the eco tank ink does last a long time. Easy to install and software is top notch. Only complaints are the ADF jams regularly and the controls are basic.

As a plain printer, this does a good job and doesn't use a lot of ink. As a copier, it does a TERRIBLE job! The copies, even on the best setting, look terrible - very blurry! Also, it looks like it has a double sided ADF but it does not. So frustrating. Overall, I needed to print about 1000 pages this month so it was worth it, but I wouldn't recommend this product for anything other than plain printing.

    Upgraded from an Epson WF-3640

I used the Epson WF-3640 for several years with a self-installed CISS system (ink reservoir to bypass the expensive ink cartridges). It was wonderful, but occasionally it was cumbersome. With this ET-3850, I have almost all the features I loved with that printer AND the advantage of a built-in ink reservoir. It operates so very smoothly, I'm loving it. The only feature that I miss is the full duplex ADF of the WF-3640 -- now, for two-sided copies, I have to make two copy passes. But that's not critical, and this machine is wonderful.

Good printer except for multipage scanning by ADF

Easy to set up and connect via WiFi and good print quality but had to contact Epson support about persistent paper jams in using the ADF multi-page scanning bed. Jury still out on whether support's recommendations will solve the problem or if I will be returning this printer.

Best Buy lost a customer, but they have my $400

Nothing but connectivity issues. One minute it will print via mobile, next it won't. Same with PC. I spend more time troubleshooting than printing. It also prints partial pages ot just header and footer info on a blank page. ADF doesn't work. Printer is junk. Waste of $400 and of course the return window is only 15 days. I will never purchase from Best Buy again.

This multifuntion adf will not pull paper through it. The color print quality is very very poor. I paid twice as much for it than any other printer. It is the worse I have ever owned. Best buy wont take it back and epson wants me to pay all shipping cost both ways and it was brand new. Warranty is worthless if dont live near svc ctr.

    Do your research on alternatives

    Posted .

For the price there are better alternatives out there. I bought this printer because my mom had the same one and she really enjoyed using it. However I was hoping it would do relatively well with scanning (ADF) based on the other reviews. It did not. Every other page was making it halfway through the scanner and then jamming. Not to mention how slow it was going through the scanner. The build quality is pretty cheap compared to the replacement i bought. An HP Smart Tank 7301. And the noise level was atrocious, I get it its a printer. But again at this price point there are better options. Something that it absolutely gets right, is the filling mechanism for the ink itself. Absolutely no mess, no touching the ink, and a decent size tank. I did not purchase any ink so I can not speak on the price.

Print quality good for what I do. I wish the ADF could handle 2 sided to 2 sided. It is manageable but a bit cumbersome. Not having to buy cartridges is worth the cost.

    Auto Document Feeder Worthless

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this printer as an upgrade for a cartridge printer and wish I would have kept the old one. The setup was easy enough and print quality is OK. But the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) is basically worthless. The ADF continuously jams when attempting to copy/scan documents, even if only feeding a single page. The only way I have been able to successfully scan documents is to copy each page by placing on the glass and then taking these copies and feeding them into the ADF. This is a real nuisance! Also, when printing, an error message appears that the paper does not match the paper settings and I have to clear the error messages for the printer to print. I have been an epson printer user for years and this is the only printer I have ever had problems using.

    Underwhelming and Disappointing

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was sold on this printer because I was told by a Best Buy associate that it offered duplex (two-sided) scanning. He said the ET 2850 did not have it but the ET 3850 and ET 4850 did have it. I was lied to, as it does not. Not only that, but the duplex printing is a COMPLETE NIGHTMARE to work. The option does not pop up where it usually does, and you have to go back deep into your settings and adjust three things every single time you want to print double-sided. To figure this out, I had to painfully sit through two hours of customer service as they explained in the most roundabout way possible. Also, the ADF gets jammed if you try to scan loose-leaf paper, which is almost 100% of my scanning. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with this printer and will be returning it. I was also told by the Best Buy associate that this printer is easier to setup and you don't have to do all the complicated signing in and downloading the app to print. I was also lied to on that, as you have to do every bit if not more than HP requires. I do not have a great level of satisfaction with HP products but this somehow managed to be worse in every single way.
