    Newer GPS Navigator from Garmin

I upgraded from an older Nuvi 1450 because I wanted a "new toy" for Xmas, and not because the 1450 was at all bad. I am impressed with the faster start up and route canculations on the NUVI 2597. I also like the choice of multiple routes capability, the more positive and "friendlier" voice guidence, and the improved longer lasting display of the split screen junction views. The bluetooth works well with my iPhone 5s. I have to admit I sometimes miss the "recalculating" prompt?

    NO GOOD- Does not boot

I was very impressed with this product's features. Bought this product twice. First time, used it for a few times, then it would not boot up. I spent a lot of time trying to make it boot up without success. Press Power button quickly, or pressed it for up to 10 seconds. It just would not boot. I need to go to Canada on business. In a panic, I bought a second one quickly, took it on the trip. It worked the first day, and it repeated the same problem again!! I cannot believe my luck. Again, tried all kinds of ways to get it to boot without success and had to give up. Fortunately, I took my own car for the trip and it had its own built in GPS. I ended up using the car's GPS to guide me the trip. This product is a disaster. Cannot recommend it. I talked to Garmin tech support. They said the product has a built in Sleep Mode. Supposed to save power. When pressed once, it goes into sleep mode. If you press it for 3-4 seconds, it will show a screen to tell you it is powering off. You are supposed to be able to wake it up. But IT DOES NOT NOT WAKE UP!!!!! I am going to return both GPS. I will NOT Buy Garmin product with built in Sleep Mode now. It looks like a software/firmware problem. I cannot believe Garmin put out a product like this!!! I am an engineer with advanced degree and 30 years of professional experiences. I work with all kinds of equipment and instruments. But I cannot make this product to wake up from deep sleep. How can a product like this be put on a market??? Bad!!!

I know that my "What's great about it" and "What's not so great" are in the same topic, but the "Voice Command" option is a great feature. Especially when driving. You don't have to press buttons. The bluetooth is awesome! Make hands free calling. Very clear. My people understood every word. The kids could talk to grandma and grandpa without having to use speaker phone on my cell phone. Great price for product. I enjoy it a lot!

Really helped on the first trip

I bought this unit to replace a very old Magellan and burning up my data plan on the smart phone. The lifetime maps and traffic are what attracted me to this model. The Traffic feature doesn't always provide accurate data; possibly there is no traffic monitoring service in certain areas. Overall I like the 2597 and would recommend this to other people. The feature that shows what the exit looks like is also very helpful.

I ended up returning the GPS. The voice command was pretty much worthless, you had to shout at it just for it to hear you, then it couldn't understand what you were saying. Also, you were supposed to be able to change the voice. I down loaded voices from Garmin Express web site, none of them would work. I contacted Garmin customer service, they suggested updating the device, which I already did(took an hour and a half), still didn't work. This GPS cost more money for added features, but why pay for features that don't work.

Feature rich. Display poor. Enough potential screen information to keep you well distracted. Trouble syncing phonne. Biggest problem is the dim screen display not true white but gray and somewhat dim. Not enough contrast between screen background and smaller secondary roads on the more zoomed in display doe not show up well. Owned since May '15

I have had other Garmin GPS. This one is the best yet. The voice control is great, better than the previous Garmin I have owned. The screen is cleaner and with the quick connect, it easily connects to my phone. The only downside was eliminating the multiple dashboard feature.

I am very happy with the device, but one one thing disappointed me, which is the TOLLROAD block option. I blocked toll road option on my garmin nuvi2597 but still takes me to toll road. Other then this problem the device is great, and reasonable price.

Unlike all the other reviews, my unit died within 24 hours. I updated the maps twice, but still the unit could find no category searches. The voice activation feature also turned up at least one category, location address, that said it did not work with American English. I will be returning the unit for an exchange and hope the new one will work much better.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you experienced with the nüvi 2597LMT. If not completely installed, many POIs and categories will be unavailable due to missing map information. I should have stuck with my phone's Google Maps GP

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with this turkey because return policy cut-off time. My mistake on top of the mistake of getting this GPS unit in the first place. Here's why I bought it to begin with - I wanted a reliable GPS connection while driving. I've been using the Google Maps GPS feature on my Samsung Galaxy phone for a couple of years and that system has been surprisingly effective except for one important problem: It often takes a long time to find a GPS signal and then loses it a little too easily. Looking at reviews all over the place and talking to other owners, it appeared that the Garmin - and this Garmin in particular - was a good choice. Not so. Yes, it does connect to a GPS almost instantly and I have yet to lose a signal. But ... the ability to select custom routes, the offering of alternative routes, and the selection of routes to chose from is far more limited (or complex) than with Google Maps. Google Maps offers far superior routes to begin with. And you can clearly see the route ahead of time or any time you want to look at it. That doesn't appear to be so with this Garmin - at least not very easily. And this Garmin has zero intuition about where you want to go when you enter a destination. You better have EVERY letter correct in the spelling and an EXACT address or else it can't find what you're looking for. When re-routing, this Garmin wants to re-route you BACK to the original route instead of re-routing you directly to your destination. As for the lifetime traffic - now that's the straw that broke this camel's back - it's a joke. Google now has traffic on its mapping ALL THE TIME - but Garmin's service is in the fine print: it's not offered everywhere - including WHERE I LIVE! Granted, Google Maps doesn't automatically re-route you around traffic if that's the most efficient thing to do, but at least I can look at the route and see where there's trouble. Certainly, there are a few bells and whistles that seem nice to have - thus two stars instead of zero - but overall, I was way better off using Google Maps on my Smartphone - and Google Maps is a FREE service!!!

This is not my first GARMIN product. It works well. The update function is good. Don't use bluetooth much - cars often have this built in.
